And from the moment you approach the city, you understand why. High above the Mediterranean Sea, an ancient citadel sits atop an impressive white limestone cliff, with houses that seem to hang almost literally over the precipice.

Bonifacio (Bunifaziu) is the kind of place where, as a passionate photographer, I constantly found myself reaching for my camera. After all, there are so many sights to see and fun things to do in Bonifacio. And to truly capture the beauty of Corsica’s oldest town, you need to admire it from both the sea and the historic citadel.

Stroll through the narrow streets of the old citadel, gaze out over the azure sea towards Sardinia, enjoy a drink on a harbor terrace, take a boat trip to view the town from the water, or walk along the white cliffs. And that is not to mention the famous steps, hidden coves, and the stunning Lavezzi Islands.

However, there is a downside to Bonifacio. Unfortunately, it is no secret and is one of Corsica’s most popular destinations. It can get extremely crowded, especially in July and August (much more so than in the capital, Ajaccio). Nevertheless, we really feel you should visit this town regardless, even if you are there during peak season.

That’s why, in this article, we share not only what to do in Bonifacio but also our practical tips, favorite restaurants, accommodation options, and of course our unfiltered opinion on Bonifacio.

Read more: The ultimate Corsica bucket list

Practical tips for Bonifacio, Corsica

If you’re short on time, here are a few quick tips for planning your visit to Bonifacio. However, we definitely recommend reading on to discover what there is to do in Bonifacio.

Where is Bonifacio located? Bonifacio is situated in the far south of Corsica, at the island’s southernmost tip, just 12 km from Sardinia. This makes the town a logical stop on a road trip through southern Corsica. It takes about 45 minutes to drive there from Porto-Vecchio and 2.5 hours from Ajaccio.

Best time to visit Bonifacio: as previously mentioned, it can get very busy (and hot) in July and August, so try to avoid these months or visit the town early or late in the day. The weather is very pleasant and it is less crowded from April to June and from September to October.

How to get to Bonifacio: the town has no airport, so most people arrive by car (read our guide on driving a rental car in Corsica here) from other parts of the island, such as Ajaccio (230 km) or Bastia (175 km). You can also visit Bonifacio by bus from Porto-Vecchio, via an organized boat trip from Ajaccio or Porticcio, or by taking the ferry from Santa Teresa Gallura in Sardinia (1 hour). Finally, you can fly into the nearest airport—Figari (located about a 30-minute drive from Bonifacio)—for instance, from Paris.

Getting around Bonifacio: you can easily reach most of the town’s attractions on foot (park outside the center and arrive early, as the parking lots fill up quickly). If you prefer not to walk up, you can take the tourist train that runs between the citadel and the harbor. If you would also like to visit places in the surrounding area, renting a car is highly recommended, though you can also rent scooters or bicycles.

Fun activities and day trips in Bonifacio: most activities take place on or around the water, including viewing Bonifacio from the sea, a delightful kayaking and swimming excursion to hidden caves, or an unmissable boat trip to the Lavezzi Islands (by day or at sunset). If you’d like to experience the old town in a different way, try the fun escape game in the citadel.

Where to stay in Bonifacio: if you’d like to stay in the Old Town, a lovely apartment for two with a stunning view or a renovated apartment for six are excellent choices. Explore the hilltop citadel

Bonifacio consists roughly of two parts: the newer section at sea level, featuring the harbor, and the old medieval town spectacularly perched atop the cliffs—a highly strategic location during the turbulent times of the past. This elevated area, the historic heart of Bonifacio, is known as the citadel and was founded in 828 by Count Bonifacio. Over the centuries, the town was repeatedly expanded, particularly by the Genoese, who ruled the area from the 12th to the 18th century.

To get from the lower-lying harbor to the citadel, you have to walk up a steep road and a flight of stairs. It’s a real workout in the heat, take our word for it :-). Alternatively, you can take the tourist train if you’d rather not walk, or park your car in the lot at the top of the citadel (provided there’s space).

From up there, you have a fantastic view of the harbor below, the sea, and the surrounding coastline. In clear weather, you can even see Sardinia, which lies just a few kilometers from Corsica.

The citadel itself is not just a single major attraction to visit and then leave; the entire area constitutes the old town, offering various activities that we will cover in the following sections. To get a good view of the citadel as a whole, you can see it partly from the harbor, but the best vantage point is by walking along the cliffs (see below).

Read more: A complete guide to the capital, Ajaccio

TIP: Wear comfortable shoes when visiting Bonifacio. The historic and picturesque upper town is a maze of ancient walls, narrow streets lined with old stone houses, colorful doors, cozy cafés, and numerous staircases. The shops are delightful too, though they cater more to tourists and lack the authenticity found in, say, the old town of Ajaccio.

You feel as though you’ve stepped back a few centuries, as the place looks exactly as it did then. As previously mentioned, it can get very crowded here during the summer months, so try to visit early or late in the day.

Whenever you visit, make sure not to rush. Wander down a side street simply because it looks appealing and see where it leads you. Dating back to the 16th century in its current form, the bastion towers some 25 meters above the harbor, making it—according to the Bonifacio tourist office—the highest bastion in France.

But you don’t come here just for the history. From the terraces, you get a fantastic view of the harbor, the famous cliffs of Bonifacio, and, on a clear day, even towards Sardinia. Several viewpoints have been created within the so-called ‘Jardin de Paysages’. Inside the bastion, in the underground chambers, you can also visit the ‘1000 ans d’histoire’ exhibition, which takes you through the long history of the fortified town.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time left to visit the bastion, but next time we would certainly combine a visit to the Bastion de l’Étendard with a walk through the old town.

5. Discover the churches of the old town

As you walk through the old town of Bonifacio, you will come across several centuries-old churches. There are no fewer than five of them within the old town—a remarkable legacy of centuries of Genoese influence.

The most famous is the Église Sainte-Marie-Majeure—the city’s oldest church (and indeed its oldest building)—which has towered over the narrow streets since the 12th century. The interior is quite austere, but the beautiful loggia (a large entrance portico) and the blend of Romanesque and Pisan architectural styles are particularly noteworthy. Also, take a look at the flying buttresses on the exterior; these once channeled rainwater from the city into a reservoir inside the church.

The Église Saint-Dominique is also worth a visit. This late 13th-century church is the only original Gothic church building in Corsica—and one of the island’s largest—built by the Knights Templar. Be sure to visit the square bell tower. Moreover, it is beautifully situated on the edge of the citadel.

As far as we’re concerned, you don’t need to visit every single church individually. However, when strolling through the citadel, be sure to step inside if a church happens to be open. Admission is always free. They are an important part of Bonifacio’s historic character and, together, tell the story of the centuries-old religious and Genoese influences in the town.

TIP: In the southern part of the citadel, you can visit the ‘Cimetière Marin’ (Marine Cemetery). It is a very peaceful and serene place, featuring numerous ornate mausoleums and chapels where families from Bonifacio are laid to rest. The staircase consists of 187 steps carved directly into the limestone cliff.

According to legend, they were carved in a single night in the 15th century by the troops of the King of Aragon. Historians take a somewhat less romantic view, stating that monks carved them to gain access to a water source. Yet the staircase remains absolutely impressive.

The descent is an experience in itself, but don’t forget that you have to climb back up afterwards. Especially on a hot summer day, you’ll really feel those 187 steps in your legs. You aren’t allowed to walk here in flip-flops, and you’re even provided with a helmet for safety. Relax on one of the beaches near Bonifacio

Bonifacio is not only beautifully situated atop limestone cliffs but is also close to some of the most stunning beaches in southern Corsica. While some popular sandy beaches are easily accessible by car, reaching other, smaller coves requires a bit more effort and a short walk. Here are some of our favorites:

Plage de Palombaggia: a stunning white-sand beach designated by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful beaches in Corsica. Located a 40-minute drive from Bonifacio towards Porto-Vecchio, it is a popular spot with plenty of amenities; while it can get crowded in the summer, it is always worth a visit. The nearby Plage de Santa Giulia is also well worth a detour.

Plage de Rondinara: located 30 minutes from Bonifacio and surrounded by unspoiled nature, this almost perfectly round bay is, in our opinion, highly recommended. Getting there requires driving over a mountain, but the fine white sand and calm, turquoise water make it one of the best beaches in the region.

Plage de la Tonnara: located a 15-minute drive northwest of Bonifacio, this beautiful, relatively quiet beach is particularly popular with families and water sports enthusiasts. Its location makes it an excellent spot for windsurfing.

Plage du Petit et Grand Sperone: two beautiful small bays a 15-minute drive from Bonifacio, accessible only on foot. From here, you also have a magnificent view of the Strait of Bonifacio and Sardinia.

Plage de Saint Antoine: as previously mentioned, this beach is located near the Phare de Pertusato lighthouse, which is accessible only on foot (via the coastal walk from Bonifacio or by parking your car closer by). It feels truly remote and unspoiled here; while the beach itself may not be the most spectacular, it is a real gem along Corsica’s sometimes busy southern coast.

So, really, there is only one thing to do in the Bonifacio area: grab your car, pick a beach, and just go. Keep in mind that remote beaches have no facilities. After all, Bonifacio is not the cheapest place to dine in Corsica—especially if you stick to the harbor area.

Many restaurants serve delicious Corsican cuisine. They often feature the same menus—fine if you want a quick bite, but certainly not offering culinary highlights or original dishes. The downside of staying in the town, however, is that parking can be a bit more difficult and prices tend to be higher.

Those who prefer a quieter stay can also choose accommodation outside the town center (though be sure to rent a car). In the area surrounding Bonifacio, you will find various beautiful hotels, apartments, and holiday homes, often featuring a swimming pool or views of the spectacular coastline and natural scenery.

Here are some of our favorite places to stay in Bonifacio:

More frequently asked questions about Bonifacio

Is Bonifacio worth a visit?

Absolutely! We found the historic town fantastic, its location on the cliffs and in the bay, along with the surrounding nature truly impressive. Yes, it can get busy here, which is why it’s best to stay for a night or two during peak season; that way, you can visit the main attractions once the day-trippers have left.

How many days do you need to visit Bonifacio?

Bonifacio consists of two distinct parts: the Haute Ville—the historic upper town with the citadel—and the Marina, the lower-lying harbor. Then there are the walks. We would recommend setting aside at least one full day to visit Bonifacio itself (including the cliff walk), but staying for two or more nights is even better if you also want to take a boat trip or explore the surrounding area.

Where is the best place to park in Bonifacio?

We chose to park outside the city to save some money and avoid the crowds. We parked at Parking Orena (10 euros); from there, you can walk to Bonifacio along the beautiful cliffside path or take the shorter route via the harbor.

If you want to park closer, there are also parking lots P1 through P5; the best option is the large paid lot at the citadel (Parking P5), though in summer it is best to arrive early and be prepared to drive up the steep road. It is also significantly more expensive here (25 euros). This parking area also offers some stunning viewpoints (especially at sunset).

Why is Bonifacio so famous?

If you have read this article, you already know it, but Bonifacio is best known for its magnificent location and history. The old fortified town perched atop white limestone cliffs, the town’s distinctive character, including its own dialect—the spectacular views across the strait between Corsica and Sardinia, the rugged coastal landscape, and so on: Bonifacio is a unique place and one of Corsica’s major attractions.

Visit Bonifacio or Porto Vecchio?

Some people wonder whether they should visit Bonifacio or Porto-Vecchio if they are short on time. For us, the answer is clear: Bonifacio! Bonifacio is far more unique than Porto-Vecchio, and there is a great deal more to do there. If you want to visit both, you can easily make Porto-Vecchio a day trip from Bonifacio.

Our unfiltered opinion on Bonifacio

Bonifacio is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Corsica. Its location is spectacular, and it is hard not to be impressed when you first see the white cliffs and the old town. But… it is also a place you have to share with a great many other travelers.

Bonifacio can get very crowded during peak season. At such times, the narrow streets of the old town sometimes feel more like a tourist attraction than an authentic Corsican village. Prices in the restaurants and cafés here also tend to be higher.

Even so, we certainly wouldn’t skip Bonifacio. It is a place you simply have to see. Our main tip is not to just spend a few hours walking through the town amidst the day-trippers. Stay for a night or two. Head out early to explore the town while it’s still quiet, and return in the evening once the biggest crowds have dispersed. Or, if possible, visit outside the peak season.

And take the time to view Bonifacio from different angles: walk along the clifftops, wander through the old town, sit by the harbor, and take a boat trip. For however touristy Bonifacio can sometimes be, its location makes it truly special.

One of our favorite cities visited during our tour of Corsica is undoubtedly Bonifacio.
