As of October, 1976, Marvel Comics had primarily used their tabloid-sized \u201cTreasury\u201d format (which had premiered in the summer of 1974) as a vehicle for reprint material.\u00a0 Exceptions to date had included MGM\u2019s Marvelous Wizard of Oz <\/em>(1975), Marvel Treasury of Oz Featuring The Marvelous Land of O<\/em>z (1975), and Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man <\/em>(1976)<\/a>, the first and last of which were co-productions with DC Comics; more recently, the past summer had seen the release of two new 10\u2033 x 13.5\u201d extravaganzas written as well as drawn by Jack Kirby: Marvel Treasury Special Featuring Captain America\u2019s Bicentennial Battles<\/em> <\/a>and 2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Marvel Treasury Edition<\/em> #12 was something different.\u00a0 By and large, it was a reprint package, re-presenting the hard-to-find (and expensive) earliest appearances of Howard the Duck.\u00a0 But it was also fronted by a brand-new 27-page story featuring Howard teaming up with the Defenders\u2026 something which made it a must-buy for my nineteen-year-old self, despite my already owning all the \u201cold\u201d material in the original editions, not to mention my general overall distaste for comics that combined new and reprinted stories under the same cover (especially when the page count of the reprints significantly exceeded that of the new stuff, as was the case here).<\/p>\n

Concerning that last point, however\u2026 if I\u2019m going to be completely honest, I probably didn\u2019t make too much of a fuss at the time about having to spend a buck-fifty for one new 27-page story.\u00a0 For one thing, that was still 10 pages more story than I\u2019d find in your standard, regular-sized Marvel comic during this era.\u00a0 For another, I\u2019d acquired enough of a collector\u2019s mindset by then that I\u2019d have figured that MTE<\/em> #12 would surely be worth at least twice its cover price in no time at all (not that I had any intention of selling it any time soon, if ever, but still).<\/p>\n

And finally, I was simply all in on Howard the Duck in the fall of 1976.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure I would have picked up this book even if it hadn\u2019t<\/em> given me the chance to enjoy one last Defenders story by the trio of talents \u2014 writer Steve Gerber and artists Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson \u2014 who had, up until two months ago<\/a>, been that superhero group\u2019s regular creative team\u2026 but the fact that it did certainly made me even more enthusiastic about buying and reading it.<\/p>\n

So, after taking a moment or two to enjoy the fun cover produced by regular HtD<\/em> penciller Gene Colan and inker Tom Palmer (with the inevitable touch-ups by John Romita), let\u2019s have a look inside,,,<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sharing this Table of Contents (which ran on the ad-free tabloid\u2019s inside front cover) partly so you have a more specific idea of what the package included \u2014 but mostly because it\u2019s the only place in the book which provides the creator credits for the story we\u2019re about to peruse.\u00a0 And now you know.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

At this point, you\u2019d be forgiven for thinking that this group of wannabe supervillains is almost too lame even to work as a joke.\u00a0 But the next guy up will prove to be rather more dangerous\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Waaaugh<\/em>, indeed.\u00a0 (For anyone who may not know, Celebrity<\/em> magazine was a shameless [and short-lived] People<\/em> knockoff that Marvel had launched in 1975.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We fans who\u2019d read Howard the Duck<\/em> #7<\/a>, released just a week before this, recognized the Parkside Plaza Hotel as the place where Howard and his companion, Beverly Switzler, had been staying while attending (OK, working at) the All-Night Party\u2019s National Convention.\u00a0 But we were surprised to see Howard and Bev being tossed out on their keisters.\u00a0 How dare they treat the party\u2019s brand-new Presidential candidate and his personal assistant in such a cavalier fashion?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Beverly tells Howard that the party\u2019s bigwigs must have assumed that he was rich, and he agrees that\u2019s plausible, asking rhetorically: \u201cOr how could I afford to run<\/strong>, right?\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s sure the ANP will get in touch once they learn what\u2019s happened, but in the meantime, she and Howard need a place to stay in New York.\u00a0 Beverly has some friends from high school who have a house in Greenwich Village, and she figures they\u2019ll put her and her companion up.\u00a0 \u201cSwell,\u201d Howard says as they board a subway train.\u00a0 \u201cSo all we gotta do is get there alive<\/strong>, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Readers who\u2019d been following this feature at least since Howard the Duck<\/em> #1<\/a> would recall Peter Parker\u2019s encounter with Howard and Beverly in that issue; and, of course, anyone who\u2019d missed it the first time was about to get the chance to catch up via its reprinting later in this Treasury.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This gang of four had been the core Defenders lineup throughout the just-concluded Gerber-Buscema run on the book; still, it\u2019s interesting that the latest additions to the non-team\u2019s non-roster, the Red Guardian and Luke Cage, haven\u2019t been included.\u00a0 Maybe our storytellers just wanted to keep things from getting too crowded.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Howard turns on his heel and makes for the exit, but almost immediately runs into an invisible wall.\u00a0 \u201cPlease forgive<\/strong> the mystic barrier<\/strong> I\u2019ve erected, my friend,\u201d Dr. Strange asks apologetically.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. Strange confirms Howard\u2019s deduction, then goes on to confide that what he really wants is his guest\u2019s opinion \u201cas a being who also has seen beyond this reality.\u201d\u00a0 The Doc has noticed \u201can unusual degree of mystical activity<\/strong>\u201d going on as of late, and wonders if Howard has as well.\u00a0 But the Duck is obliged to disappoint his host, confessing, \u201cClosest I<\/strong> ever came to stirring up magic was an act<\/strong> I useta do at birthday parties<\/strong>.\u00a0 Everything else I just kinda got stirred into<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Strange leads Howard into the darkened room where resides the Orb of Agamotto.\u00a0 He begins to describe how he intends to use the Orb to locate his guest\u2019s other-dimensional homeworld, \u201cand then, by the power of the eternal Vishanti<\/strong>\u2026\u201d But a suddenly apprehensive Howard cuts him off, indicating he\u2019d just as soon the magician \u201cskip the spooky details<\/strong>\u201c\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cStiga\u201d<\/a> is a Swedish brand name for products associated with table tennis and other racquet games; Nighthawk\u2019s use of the word as a noun here would appear to refer to a robot ball-launcher<\/a> that the company may have marketed in the U.S. in the 1970s, but, best as I can tell, only sells overseas nowadays.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A seasoned Marvel Comics reader might well take issue with how Dr. Strange\u2019s abilities are portrayed in this story, asking such questions as:\u00a0 Should he be able to project his astral form after his physical form has been knocked unconscious?\u00a0 And even if he can, how is it possible for him to physically manifest a costume \u2014 complete with a (presumably fully operational) Cloak of Levitation \u2014 for Howard out of thin air, especially in such a state?\u00a0 But while Steve Gerber might justifiably be dinged for having Dr. Strange\u2019s power levels vary wildly over the course of his Defenders<\/em> run (mostly for narrative convenience, or so at least it often seemed), I\u2019m inclined to give him a break here.\u00a0 After all, this is a Howard the Duck story first and foremost, and it\u2019s reasonable to expect the \u201crules\u201d of the Marvel Universe to be a bit more elastic in Howard\u2019s vicinity.\u00a0 Or so thinks your humble blogger, at any rate.<\/p>\n

Why Shea Stadium?\u00a0 Well, why not?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Tillie\u2019s supposedly \u201cfeminist\u201d shtick is reminiscent of the modus operandi\/backstories of a couple of other Marvel characters, Thundra and Red Sonja; the joke in her case seems to be that she\u2019s not conventionally attractive, so who\u2019d ever want<\/em> to win her for a bride?\u00a0 (No, this bit has not aged well.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Kyle \u201cNighthawk\u201d Richmond is, of course, correct.\u00a0 In the Steve Gerber era, the Defenders had indeed become the Marvel team that somehow attracted \u201cweird villains\u201d \u2014 maybe not quite<\/em> as weird as such earlier foes of Howard as the Hellcow<\/a>, the Space Turnip<\/a>, or Winky-Man<\/a> \u2014 but close enough that the melding of the two series\u2019 milieus isn\u2019t nearly as jarring as having Howard drop in on the Fantastic Four or Avengers would be.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, back at Dr. Strange\u2019s Sanctum Sanctorum, Howard is successsfully fighting back against Dr. Angst.\u00a0 After freeing himself from his opponent\u2019s needle-and-thread trap, our hero deflects an onslaught of six-ply radial tires via that old standby, the Shield of the Seraphim\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For anyone out there who might still have been thinking that Howard\u2019s Doc Strange duds were simply illusory, this last sequence seals the deal \u2014 this duplicate Cloak of Levitation is every bit as potent as the OG one Doc got as a gift from the Ancient One way back in Strange Tales<\/em> #127 (Dec., 1964).\u00a0 Which might again raise the question of how such a thing could possibly work; though, as we noted before, it\u2019s probably better just to roll with the anarchic absurdity of the whole enterprise than to sweat such details.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Following Howard and Bev\u2019s brief break-up and almost instantaneous reunion in Howard the Duck<\/em> #6, the idea that he\u2019d up and leave her to return to his native dimension just a couple of episodes later was clearly a non-starter.\u00a0 Still, despite the understated manner in which the moment is played, it\u2019s clearly a major step for the couple\u2019s relationship that he\u2019s blowing off the opportunity to go home for the sake of remaining with her.<\/p>\n

Left unanswered at the end of this episode, of course, is the very pertinent question of who hired Dr. Angst to kill Howard in the first place, as well as its natural follow-up: when and how will they try again?\u00a0 (That they will<\/em> try again obviously goes without saying.)\u00a0 But those answers will have to wait a few weeks, until the release of the 8th issue of the regular monthly Howard the Duck<\/em> title; for now, at least, our tale is done.<\/p>\n

Half a century after its original publication, \u201cThe Duck and the Defenders\u201d may not rate as one of the greatest ever stories for either its star or its guest-stars \u2014 but it\u2019s still pretty darn amusing, in your humble blogger\u2019s opinion, serving as a diverting detour for the Duck on his road to the White House as well as a fine coda to the Gerber-Buscema Defenders<\/em> run.\u00a0 Speaking in regards to the latter, Dr. Angst\u2019s \u201cBand of the Bland\u201d<\/a> (as they\u2019d be retroactively christened when Gerber brought them back in Sensational She-Hulk<\/em> some fourteen years later) seem like clear forerunners of Mr. Nobody\u2019s Brotherhood of Dada<\/a>, the supervillain group created by Grant Morrison for that writer\u2019s monumental Doom Patrol<\/em> run of the early 1980s; as such, their misadventures here offer us a brief glimpse of what Gerber\u2019s Defenders<\/em> might have eventually evolved into, given enough time\u2026 and, perhaps, a more receptive marketplace.\u00a0 But, if nothing else, the non-team would at least be entering the post-Gerber era with their proud non-ranks swelled by at least one new non-member.\u00a0 (As the star of his own feature, Howard definitely counts.\u00a0 Beverly might too \u2014 except that if we include her, we might also have to fold in Jack Norriss, and I\u2019d honestly rather not go there.)<\/p>\n\n

The reprinted content that takes up over half of Marvel Treasury Edition<\/em> #12\u2019s page-count includes Howard the Duck\u2019s first two solo headlining adventures, which ran as backups in Giant-Size Man-Thing<\/em> #4<\/a> and #5<\/a>, respectively, as well as Howard the Duck<\/em> #1, all of which were written by Steve Gerber and pencilled by Frank Brunner.\u00a0 But it also includes Howard\u2019s debut appearances as a minor supporting character to \"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Marvel\u2019s premiere muck-monster in Fear<\/em> #19 and Man-Thing<\/em> #1, as written by Gerber and pencilled by Val Mayerik \u2014 or, rather, it includes the few relevant pages from each of those books that actually feature<\/em> Howard.\u00a0 Given that our web-footed future super-star literally walks into the story on the fifteenth page of the first comic (see left) and then just as literally falls out of it on the ninth page of the second (see right), these scenes don\u2019t make much sense without some framing material.\u00a0 So that\u2019s what MTE<\/em> #12 provides, mostly in the form of text\u2026 though the whole thing is prefaced by an all-new splash page by Gerber and Mayerik:<\/p>\n

I can still recall how startled I was by this page when I first saw it in October, 1976, simply because of how different \u2014 and, for my money, better<\/em> \u2014 Howard looked in this piece, which was inked as well as pencilled by Mayerik, as compared to Mayerik\u2019s earlier renditions, which were inked by Sal Trapani.\u00a0 It was then (and remains) a reminder of how much difference an inker can make when it comes to comics art\u2026 as well as a taste of what a Mayerik-drawn Howard the Duck<\/em> might look like.\u00a0 (We\u2019d get a even better idea next summer, when the artist would illustrate Howard\u2019s first Annual<\/em>, followed half-a-year later by the title\u2019s two-part \u201cStar Wars\u201d parody \u2014 but we\u2019ll save further discussion of those for another time.)<\/p>\n\n

In wrapping this up, we should note for the record that the 84-page (counting covers) Marvel Treasury Edition<\/em> #12 also included such bonus features as an early, unused version of the cover to the yet-unreleased Howard the Duck<\/em> #8, as well as several illustrated text pieces written by Gerber, mostly in regards to the HtD Presidential Campaign.\u00a0 The whole package was topped off by another all-new piece of artwork that graced the tabloid\u2019s back cover\u2026<\/p>\n
