Examining Timing of 777-8F&#8217;s Market Entrance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>By Howard Hardee and Charles Alcock\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>September 29, 2026\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Subscription Required\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first flight of the Airbus A350 Freighter on September 29 signified more than the European airframer&#8217;s intention to compete in the dedicated widebody cargo market.<\/p>\n<p>When the jet enters service\u2014<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/?s=A350F\">possibly in 2028<\/a><\/strong>, though Airbus still maintains that revenue service will begin next year\u2014it will represent the first competition for Boeing&#8217;s widebody freighters since the MD-11F made its first flight in January 1990, notes Tom Crabtree, a cargo market consultant with the Transport Research Advisory.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the A350F&#8217;s entry to service is delayed, the program will likely benefit from a significant jump on Boeing&#8217;s 777-8F.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51983-2\" style=\"width: 2410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Airbus-A350F-3-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51983-2\" class=\"wp-image-51983 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Airbus-A350F-3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1350\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-51983-2\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The first example of the A350F pictured ahead of its first flight on September 29, 2026. Photo credit: Airbus<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In terms of economic and operating performance, the 777-8F and the A350F are neck and neck, within 3% of each other in fuel burn and cash operating costs, according to a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/2022\/02\/16\/the-new-boeing-freighter-777-8f-versus-airbus-a350f-part-3\/\">2022 breakdown<\/a><\/strong> by Leeham News and Analysis&#8217; Bjorn Fehrm. Maintenance costs may prove a separator, but such costs will only become clear once both aircraft are in service for years.<\/p>\n<p>Both freighters provide a 20% efficiency improvement over previous-generation cargo jets.<\/p>\n<p>With little daylight separating the performance of the two types, the advantage likely goes to the airframer that reaches market first.
