On July 4, 2026, the United States turned 250 years old — a milestone historians call the semiquincentennial, and one the country marked with the largest coordinated birthday celebration in its history.

Unfortunately, many Americans don’t understand exactly what happened on July 4, 1776, who was involved, or why so many of the “facts” we grew up with are only half true.

This post covers all of it: the real history of Independence Day, the myths that have stuck around for 250 years, and why the Fourth of July deserves so much attention.

Short on time? The Fourth of July marks the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, officially cutting ties with Great Britain. The 13 colonies became the United States — and this year, we celebrated 250 years since that moment.

Past Lane Travels contains affiliate links and is a member of the Amazon LLC Associates Program.
