Having decided not to attend the Bluebell Railway Beer
\nFestival,<\/b> for reasons previously explained, I thought that a visit to Lewes
\n<\/b>would be a decent substitute, as well as a good idea. Travelling by bus, via
\nTunbridge Wells,<\/b> would enable me to call in at the O2 shop <\/b>in the town in order
\nto sort out the data allowance issues I’d been experiencing with my Samsung
\n<\/b>mobile phone. These had arisen whilst on holiday and occurred because I was,
\nquite rightly, too tight to pay the \u00a3100, <\/b>yes \u00a3100<\/b> for onboard internet
\nconnection! Like many cruise lines Ambassador<\/b> rely on Elon Musk’s Starlink
\n<\/b>system for communications and web browsing whilst at sea, so that’s another reason not to
\ncough up a tonne for someone who\u2019s already got far more money than sense.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I didn’t miss not being connected at all in fact it was
\nrather than nice but when we docked, and bearing in mind that we primarily
\nsailing around the British Isles<\/b>, I did occasionally log on to catch up with
\nemails and in particular, an ongoing application to unlock one of my frozen
\npension funds. Anyway, I jumped on a bus going towards Tunbridge Wells,<\/b> and
\nsince I was travelling before 9.30am,<\/b> the start time for UK bus passes <\/b>during
\nthe week, I had to pay for my fare! It was the princely sum of \u00a33.00, <\/b>but the
\nprice didn\u2019t really justify knocking 10 minutes <\/b>off my journey. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I called in at the O2 shop<\/b>, as planned, to confirm I was
\npaying the correct tariff for my phone and to establish how much many months
\nwere left on my current contract. There was just over a year remaining, but I
\nmust surely have paid for my Samsung Galaxy<\/b> several times over, since acquiring
\nit two years ago! Moving swiftly on I walked along to the bus stop but
\nunfortunately, I\u2019d just missed the No. 29 Brighton bus, <\/b>which meant a 25-minute<\/b>
\nwait for the next one. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

One of the reasons for going to Lewes<\/b> was to return a dozen
\nor so empty bottles to return to the brewery shop. I\u2019m sure some readers will
\nrecall me undertaking a similar journey earlier in the year, for the exactly
\nthe same purpose. There were too many to carry on that occasion, hence me
\nmaking a return trip, but since last Christmas<\/b> a large number of empty Harvey’s
\n<\/b>beer bottles had accumulated in our summer house.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

As I’ve written in the past Harvey\u2019s <\/b>are one of the very few
\nUK breweries <\/b>that still wash and reuse their bottles, and good luck to them,
\nbecause I think it’s an excellent idea. Far better for the bottles to be
\nrefilled, rather than perfectly decent specimens ending up in bottle banks,
\nsmashed to smithereens. It\u2019s worth noting too that a lot more energy has to be
\nused to create to create brand new bottles rather than simply cleaning and
\nwashing empty ones, ready to be used again.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

I received the princely sum of \u00a31.20<\/b> for those bottles, and
\nwith my load considerably lightened, resisted the temptation to buy more. I
\ncould perhaps, have picked up a few cans, and I did at one stage have the
\nintention of returning later to the shop and doing just that, but it never
\nhappened. I set off to find somewhere to eat, and I also wanted a drink, as foolishly
\nI didn’t bring any water with me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The bus journey had seemed to take forever,
\nprimarily because after reaching Crowborough <\/b>the bus was routed round what I
\nwould call, for what of a better phrase, the \u201carse end\u201d <\/i><\/b>of the town. That\u2019s not
\nimplying there’s anything wrong with that part of Crowborough,<\/b> and it\u2019s
\ncertainly not rundown or anything like that, in fact it’s quite well maintained
\nas one would expect from a well-to-do, leafy suburb. It’s just that without any
\npubs or shops, it comes across as one area of sterile housing after another,
\nsome of it very much \u201cdes reses\u201d <\/i><\/b>but boring all the same.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Eventually, the bus worked its way back around to the south
\nof the town and rejoined the A26. <\/b>It\u2019s that part of the journey where the
\nimposing bulk of the South Downs<\/b> escarpment first comes into view, bringing
\nback memories of a succession of long-distance walks, along the South Downs Way<\/b>, twenty or
\nmore years ago.\u00a0 <\/span>Time was marching on
\nthough, and there was still the bottom end of Ashdown Forest<\/b> to negotiate,
\nbefore the bus eventually pulled into Uckfield.<\/b> Further delays followed as we
\npulled into the bus station, before eventually making our way out of\u00a0 the town and on towards Lewes. <\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

There was no escaping the South Downs<\/b> as the bus approached
\nLewes,<\/b> but I was already having serious doubts about how I should make the
\nreturn journey, especially if it was after a belly full of beer. Spoiler alert,
\nI made the return journey by rail, despite having to pay for it, and missing
\nthe free ride home that my bus pass would have given me.\u00a0 <\/span>As things turned out I didn’t have more than
\na few pints of beer, but still enough for me to make use of the toilet
\nfacilities on the train home. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

So, something to eat, and a coffee to drunk as well, before
\ngetting stuck into a few of Lewes\u2019s<\/b> finest pubs. I noticed the presence of a
\nGail\u2019s Bakery,<\/b> just before I alighted from the bus at the bottom of School
\nHill, <\/b>after first returning my empty bottles to Harvey\u2019s Shop,<\/b> I retraced my
\nroute and set foot inside the much-vaunted Gail\u2019s<\/b> for the first time. It wasn\u2019t
\nsurprising to find this upmarket bakery trading in an equally upmarket town
\nlike Lewes, <\/b>but posh nosh or not, they didn\u2019t have the Cornish Pasty<\/b> I was
\nlusting after. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

However, on the other side of the road, was a branch of the
\nrapidly expanding Cornish Bakery <\/b>chain, where I was able to obtain exactly what
\nI was looking for, as evidenced in the attached photo. I sat outside enjoying
\nmy artisanal lunch, which was just right for the occasion. So much so that it
\nwas worth asking what Copilot <\/b>had to say about my spot of al fresco lunch. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat looks like a proper little moment of calm, Paul \u2014 a
\npasty with a decent-looking coffee, the sort of simple pairing that somehow
\nfeels more restorative than it has any right to be. The pasty\u2019s crust has that
\nslightly blistered, golden finish that suggests it\u2019ll give a satisfying crack
\nwhen you bite in, and the coffee\u2019s foam looks like it was made by someone who
\nactually cares about getting the milk right rather than just blasting it with
\nsteam\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/b><\/i><\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the kind of table you linger at for a few minutes
\nlonger than planned, letting the warmth of the cup settle you while the world
\nkeeps moving around. A small, quiet pleasure \u2014 but those are often the ones
\nthat stick\u201d.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

It\u2019s quite scary for AI <\/b>to be summarising my lunchtime treat
\nlike that, and all from a simple photograph, but that\u2019s the direction we appear
\nto be heading, at the moment. In the meantime, let\u2019s leave things here, before
\ngetting down to the nitty gritty of what this blog is still all about, a decent
