\n When it comes to Peranakan food, Katong is usually the first place that comes
\n to mind. But here\u2019s the thing, if you venture a little further east, there are
\n some underrated gems quietly holding their own.\n<\/p>\n

\n We previously checked out
\n Nyonya Taste by Brew and Bar<\/a>\u00a0near <\/i>Simpang Bedok,\u00a0and this time, we headed to Bedok North to try
\n Marie\u2019s Lapis Cafe<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n

\n A Hidden Gem in Bedok North<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n This was one of those surprised finds. A quick Google search for Peranakan
\n food in Bedok led us here, and honestly, it feels like a proper hidden gem.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\n Located in a quiet corner next to Bedok 538 Market and Food Centre, it is
\n definitely off the beaten track. There\u2019s no MRT nearby, so unless you stay in
\n the area, you probably wouldn\u2019t stumble upon it. That said, this is exactly
\n the kind of neighbourhood spot residents would want to keep to themselves.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\n The cafe itself is small, seating around 20 to 30 pax including outdoor seats.
\n The vibe is \u0443\u044e\u0442 and nostalgic, with a homely retro charm that makes you feel
\n like you are dining in someone\u2019s living room.\n<\/p>\n

\n Fun fact: Marie\u2019s Lapis Cafe clinched \u201cBest Mee Siam in Town\u201d at the Class
\n 95FM Foodie Choice Awards May 2024. We did not try it this round as we were
\n craving other Peranakan staples, but that just gives us a reason to come back.\n<\/p>\n

Ayam Pongteh<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\n Tender chicken in a rich, savoury gravy with mild sweetness. Comforting and
\n full of flavour without being overpowering.\n<\/p>\n

\n A classic done right. Cabbage, mushrooms, black fungus, and knotted lily buds
\n braised in a savoury sauce. Nicely balanced with a hint of sweetness.\n<\/p>\n

Blue Pea Rice with Omelette<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/b>Visually striking and fragrant. The rice had a light \u0430\u0440\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0442, and
\n paired well with the fluffy omelette.\n<\/p>\n

\n Crispy bite-sized rolls packed with chicken, prawn, and water chestnut. A
\n great starter to get the appetite going.\n<\/p>\n

Chewy, fragrant, and not overly sweet. A satisfying end to the meal.<\/p>\n

\n Is This the Cheapest Peranakan Food in Town?<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Short answer: it might just be.<\/p>\n

\n Portions were generous enough for two to share, and the prices were
\n surprisingly low. Compared to many Peranakan restaurants, you are easily
\n paying almost half here. On top of that, there is no GST and no service
\n charge, which makes the value even more compelling.\n<\/p>\n

\n Verdict<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Marie\u2019s Lapis Cafe is the kind of place you don\u2019t plan for, but end up wanting
\n to return to. It delivers authentic Peranakan flavours in a cosy, no-frills
\n setting, without the usual price tag. A shoutout to the owner who greeted us
\n at the door with a warm smile. You can feel the passion and warmth the moment
\n you step in.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
