In recent weeks, Flock Safety\u2019s national network of automated license plate readers has come under intense scrutiny, culminating in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing<\/span><\/a> on Wednesday to interrogate the company\u2019s practices and handling of Americans\u2019 location data.<\/p>\n

The hearing follows reports that police officers have misused camera data to track people \u2014 including, in one case<\/span><\/a>, an ex-romantic partner \u2014 and that Flock collects<\/span><\/a> license plate records into a national database, searchable with AI tools. As a result, more than 200 cities and counties have canceled<\/span><\/a> or deactivated their Flock contracts.<\/p>\n

In August, Data for Progress polling found<\/span><\/a> that voters viewed the cameras unfavorably by a -19-point margin. One month later, that deficit has grown<\/span><\/a> to -29 points, with 52% now unfavorable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Awareness has grown as well. In August, 37% of voters hadn\u2019t heard enough about the technology to provide an opinion, while only 24% say the same in the newest polling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
