Snyder\u2019s career has drawn strong reactions for years. He broke out with his remake of <i>Dawn of the Dead<\/i>, then moved into comic book adaptations with Miller\u2019s <i>300<\/i> and Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons\u2019 <i>Watchmen<\/i>. The latter film divided fans and critics, including Moore himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His DC work brought even more debate. <i>Man of Steel<\/i> earned a loyal following, while <i>Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/i> became a major flashpoint for fans unhappy with the direction of the DC Extended Universe. In fact, he swiped the battle sequence between Superman and Batman in his <em>Dawn of Justice<\/em> directly from\u00a0Miller\u2019s <i>The Dark Knight Returns<\/i>. Snyder later left <i>Justice League<\/i> after a family tragedy. Joss Whedon took over, and the finished theatrical version made major changes to Snyder\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53313\" src=\"https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/superman-batman-rooftop-189287.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/superman-batman-rooftop-189287.jpg 655w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/superman-batman-rooftop-189287-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/superman-batman-rooftop-189287-170x82.jpg 170w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/superman-batman-rooftop-189287-370x178.jpg 370w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/superman-batman-rooftop-189287-600x289.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, as Snyder promotes <i>The Last Photograph<\/i>, a thriller about a former DEA agent hunting a killer, he says he still wants another shot at the superhero genre. His preferred project is Miller\u2019s landmark Batman story, <i>The Dark Knight Returns<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Snyder told <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/features\/zack-snyder-responds-last-photograph-bad-reviews-fascist-1236862796\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Variety<\/i><\/a> that he would love to make the film, \u201cif anyone would ever let me do it outside the DC Universe.\u201d He added, \u201cIf I could do <i>Watchmen<\/i> and <i>Dark Knight Returns<\/i>, those two books next to each other, to me, represent [a] complete cycle of the superhero comic book medium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The idea makes sense. Hollywood has spent years churning out superhero movies that often feel built by committee. Miller\u2019s story is darker, older, and more skeptical about power. It could work as a standalone film, much like Christopher Nolan\u2019s <i>The Dark Knight<\/i> trilogy.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53990\" src=\"https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the_dark_knight_10_year_anniversary_best_superhero_movie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the_dark_knight_10_year_anniversary_best_superhero_movie.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the_dark_knight_10_year_anniversary_best_superhero_movie-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the_dark_knight_10_year_anniversary_best_superhero_movie-170x96.jpg 170w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the_dark_knight_10_year_anniversary_best_superhero_movie-370x208.jpg 370w, https:\/\/bleedingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the_dark_knight_10_year_anniversary_best_superhero_movie-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Snyder said audiences may now be ready for that kind of adaptation. \u201cLet\u2019s not forget: <i>The Dark Knight Returns<\/i> was written for a comic book audience that was very exhausted by comic books in the same way that <i>Watchmen<\/i> was, so having that movie written now for people who are exhausted by comic book movies would be a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Superhero films may never disappear, but he\u2019s right that the genre needs filmmakers willing to challenge its stale formula.
