Gas has crossed the $4-a-gallon mark again nationwide, and the latest AAA figure makes that painfully clear. On September 25, the national average for regular gasoline stood at about $4.49 a gallon<\/a>, with prices still climbing.<\/p>\n

That makes every inefficient driving habit a little more expensive. The car does not care whether a gallon costs $3 or $4.49. It burns the fuel anyway. The difference shows up later on the credit card statement.<\/p>\n

Some fuel-wasting habits are obvious, such as speeding around town or leaving the engine running while parked. Others hide in ordinary routines that barely register as \u201cdriving choices.\u201d<\/p>\n

1. Treating the Gas Pedal Like an On-Off Switch<\/h2>\n

Hard acceleration feels satisfying for about three seconds. The fuel economy meter, however, is considerably less impressed.<\/p>\n

Rapid acceleration followed by hard braking forces the engine to work harder without moving the vehicle efficiently for very long. The Department of Energy says aggressive driving can reduce fuel economy substantially, particularly in stop-and-go traffic<\/a>. Smooth acceleration and anticipating traffic can reduce those unnecessary bursts of fuel use.<\/p>\n

That does not mean crawling away from every traffic light while a line of cars forms behind you. It means avoiding the repeated cycle of racing toward the next red light, slamming the brakes, then accelerating again. Leaving a little more space ahead can make the drive smoother and reduce those needless fuel-burning surges.<\/p>\n

2. Letting Highway Speed Creep Higher<\/h2>\n

A speedometer can turn an ordinary commute into an expensive one without the driver noticing. Fuel economy generally falls as speeds rise, and the Department of Energy notes that mileage tends to decline rapidly above 50 mph. Its fuel-economy guidance also shows why driving faster can increase fuel costs even when the route stays exactly the same.<\/p>\n

This does not mean every driver should pick an artificially low speed. Traffic conditions, posted limits, and safe driving come first. But if a driver routinely treats the highway like a personal racetrack, easing back to a reasonable speed can reduce fuel consumption without changing the destination.<\/p>\n

3. Warming Up the Car While It Sits in the Driveway<\/h2>\n

There is something oddly comforting about sitting in a running car before leaving. The cabin gets warm or cool, the windshield clears, and nobody has to deal with that first blast of unpleasant air.<\/p>\n

The fuel still disappears, though.<\/p>\n

The Department of Energy says idling can consume roughly a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on the vehicle and conditions. Its guidance recommends limiting unnecessary idling rather than allowing the engine to run simply because the driver has not left yet.<\/p>\n

The same issue appears at school pickups, curbside waits, drive-throughs, and other stops. A few minutes may seem trivial, but repeated every day, those minutes become fuel consumed without adding a single mile to the trip.<\/p>\n

4. Leaving the Roof Box or Rack Up All Year<\/h2>\n

A roof rack can look harmless when it sits empty. Aerodynamically, the car may disagree. Anything that sticks into the airflow creates additional drag. The Department of Energy notes that large roof-mounted cargo boxes can reduce fuel economy, particularly at highway speeds. Rear-mounted cargo equipment generally creates less of a fuel penalty.<\/p>\n

That makes a roof carrier worth removing when it no longer serves a purpose. Keeping one installed for a single weekend trip can mean carrying extra aerodynamic baggage through every commute afterward. The same principle applies to bulky equipment that stays mounted long after the camping trip, vacation, or home-improvement project ends.<\/p>\n

5. Driving Around on Underinflated Tires<\/h2>\n

Tire pressure is one of those boring details that becomes interesting the moment gasoline gets expensive.<\/p>\n

Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, which means the engine has to work harder to move the vehicle. The Department of Energy estimates that properly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by about 0.6% on average and up to 3% in some situations. Proper inflation also supports tire life and safety.<\/p>\n

The correct number usually appears on the vehicle’s doorjamb label or in the owner’s manual. It is not necessarily the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Checking pressure when the tires are cold gives a more useful reading.<\/p>\n

6. Carrying a Garage in the Trunk<\/h2>\n

That toolbox from three months ago probably does not need to ride along today.<\/p>\n

Extra weight can reduce fuel economy, with the effect generally more noticeable in smaller vehicles. The Department of Energy recommends removing unnecessary items rather than treating the trunk as permanent storage.<\/p>\n

This habit often sneaks up on drivers because individual objects seem insignificant. A box of supplies, sports equipment, tools, old luggage, and miscellaneous cargo can eventually become a surprisingly permanent passenger. None of it earns miles for the driver, but the engine moves it anyway.<\/p>\n

7. Making Separate Trips That Could Have Been One<\/h2>\n

Fuel economy is only part of the fuel equation. Distance matters too. A driver can have a perfectly maintained car and still spend more on gasoline by making several unnecessary trips across town. Returning home before heading back out for groceries, picking up a forgotten item, or driving to another store without checking nearby options all add miles.<\/p>\n

Combining errands does not require turning every Saturday into a military logistics exercise. It can be as simple as handling the grocery stop on the way home from work rather than making another round trip later. Route planning can also reduce unnecessary miles and time spent sitting in traffic, which the Department of Energy identifies as part of more efficient driving.<\/p>\n

A Costly Tank Can Reveal More Than a High Pump Price<\/h2>\n

Higher gasoline prices make inefficient driving easier to spot, but the habits themselves are not new. A driver who accelerates aggressively, carries unnecessary cargo, idles frequently, and ignores tire pressure will use more fuel regardless of the price on the pump.<\/p>\n

The useful response does not require obsessing over every mile. Start with the habits that happen repeatedly. Removing an unused roof carrier is easy. Checking tire pressure takes minutes. Combining errands can eliminate miles entirely. Smoother driving can change how often the fuel gauge moves toward empty.<\/p>\n
