W<\/span>hen I look at the \u201cinside
\nbaseball\u201d world of wine writing lately, I want to puke. It is as if this
\nlittle manufactured bubble, which displays little if anything of a natural
\nreality, exists for the simple reason that folks need something to hang onto in
\nregard to the way they identify themselves in the world. Apart from the
\nartifice, the performativity, the virtuousness and the constant scuffling for
\nthe top rung, where are the stories? What happened to the story tellers?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I think about photography often when arguments over \u201cart\u201d and
\ntechnology become heated. In the 1830s, when photography was born, painters
\nwere outraged. Here was this imitator, this mechanical intruder, muscling in on
\nwhat they’d decided art was. Give it a century, though, and we got an Ansel
\nAdams, a Diane Arbus \u2013 as different from each other as Monet was from Kandinsky
\n\u2013 and nobody was arguing anymore about whether photography was or wasn\u2019t art.
\nThen digital cameras arrived and the film shooters lost their minds over this
\nnew usurper. Now digital is as good, technically, maybe better, at making art
\nthan film ever was. And here comes AI, and once again everybody’s hair is on
\nfire. I often heard this line from a wine colleague of mine, Guy Stout. He
\nloved to say, \u201cIt ain\u2019t the wand, it\u2019s the magician.\u201d I took those words to
\nheart. In the same way \u2013 AI is a wand \u2013 it sure as hell ain\u2019t my magician. It\u2019s
\na tool, a prop, a pillow to cry on, even \u2013 but it is not the story teller we
\nneed \u2013 we still need the humans, the magicians, to saddle up to the campfire
\nand spin the tale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

So there’s that. It’s nothing new. It’s the same argument,
\ndressed up for the latest unsuspecting and upcoming generation. The tool
\nchanges but the panic rears its ugly head once again. And it’s never really
\nabout the tool \u2013 it’s about who has the loudest megaphone to calm us\/rile us up
\nwhile the earth trembles ever so repeatedly.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is also the general dearth of good storytelling out
\nthere. In my freelance writing for Dallas\u2019 flagship monthly magazine, D, (think
\nNew York magazine with a slight twang) I\u2019ve gone for short form storytelling
\nwhile also informing people of trends or unseen gems in my orbit \u2013 a <\/span>neighborhood
\ngrocery store<\/span><\/a> worth building a shopping list around, a <\/span>manufactured
\ncoastline<\/span><\/a> worth calling out \u2013 they\u2019ve been well received, and gotten
\ngood traffic, and while that wasn\u2019t my sole objective, it offers a critical
\nmetric which is the needed oxygen for today\u2019s online world.<\/span><\/p>\n

I can see why so many folks who lay a claim to being a wine
\nwriter are lamenting that their platforms have all but been abandoned by
\npeople, who a mere 10 or 15 years ago, flocked to the sites in copious amounts,
\ninhaling and ravishing any little tidbit of vinous information, in search of a
\ngood glass of wine. It used to be better. Now it\u2019s gotten murky and cloudy and
\nstifling. No wonder the wine mavens now all talk at and past each other \u2013 most
\neveryone has left the room years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

When did it become a bloody dog-eat-dogmatic world? Or better yet,
\nwhy\u203d<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m gonna throw some diesel on the bonfire I\u2019ve already
\nstarted and state out front that there are too many people trying to monetize
\ntheir writing and it has caused a huge fragmentation among the readers \u2013 they
\nsimply cannot afford it in economic terms, and further they do not have the
\nattention bandwidth to absorb and digest all the information that the wine
\nwriting community produces<\/span>\u203d<\/span> There have been several folks
\nwho have done a cost analysis, if one were to subscribe to all the major
\npublications and then add the top 10-20 fee-based Substack sites. It\u2019s
\nthousands of dollars a year, not to mention the time it would take to go through
\nall of the material. If it were worth it. <\/span><\/p>\n

And it doesn\u2019t look like many people are saying it is worth it
\nthese days. Look, no one wants to work for free. But a blog, like mine, for
\ninstance, while it is free to the readers who come to it weekly for the past 20
\nyears, it does act like a billboard for my writing style and subjects and it
\ndoes lead to paying gigs. Do I need the money? Well, I do have my vices \u2013 I really
\nlike to play around with photography equipment \u2013 and that can get expensive at
\ntimes. But I also use that equipment to augment my writing and it has brought
\nme income streams as well. So, while I do not depend upon writing for a living,
\nand while I do understand there are folks out there who would like to support
\nthemselves, solely, with their writing, I know (as they do) that there are only
\na few who actually make enough money to support themselves in a fairly comfortable
\nlifestyle setting. Like actors or artists or athletes, there is only so much
\nroom at the top. Do I like that? Well, if I had my druthers, I\u2019d love to see
\nmore folks sharing the limelight and the financial rewards. But the market
\ndrives those metrics.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was in sales. Reluctantly. My dad was a salesman. And a good
\none. But it just didn\u2019t feel like my jam. I did, however, make a study of it
\nand didn\u2019t do too badly at it. But what the commercial world taught me was that
\nthere is competition and if you don\u2019t find a way to compete, you get left
\nbehind to wail and flail in the wind. Get in and get in the game or get out. I
\nthink that might be similar in the writing world. And in the uber-scrunchy
\nminiscule world of wine writing, there are even fewer angels dancing on the
\nhead of that pin. Meanwhile in today\u2019s open-media landscape, folks put up a
\nSubstack or a WordPress (or a Blogger!) and, like the town criers we all are,
\npeel off and let \u2018er rip. And this is where we have landed now, in 2026. <\/span><\/p>\n

All this has made me thirsty. We\u2019re finally getting a break in
\nthe 100\u00b0F weather here in North Texas. Haven\u2019t had rain in months. I can hardly
\nwait for the weather to cool even more, so I can make my Eggplant Parmigiana
\nfor Rocco. That\u2019s what I am looking forward to \u2013 opening a good bottle of
\nMontepulciano d\u2019Abruzzo to go with the Parmigiana and sharing the food (not the
\nwine) with man\u2019s best friend, my dog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
