For example, in the infamous John Oliver show where he took apart carbon offsetting\u2026<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When it comes to sustainability, one of the biggest problems any fossil fuel burning industry or company faces is that of credibility.<\/p>\n<p><span>For example, in the infamous John Oliver show where he took apart carbon offsetting (a theme we\u2019ll return to), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzz.ie\/news\/irish-news\/john-oliver-michael-oleary-carbon-27812131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Oliver spent a lot of airtime in making fun <\/span><\/a><span>of Ryanair\u2019s Michael O\u2019Leary, showing an interview where O\u2019Leary starts talking about \u201cwhales and dolphins\u201d when asked about the airline\u2019s (voluntary) carbon offset programm<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Climate change activists simply don\u2019t believe that companies that burn fossil fuels are actually serious about net zero, and think that any sustainability initiative is a smokescreen to carry on business as usual &#8211; or greenwashing.<\/p>\n<p><span>And environmental groups have done research to support their point of view.\u00a0 For instance, over the weekend, think tank Planet Tracker released a report accusing the <\/span><span>APEW &#8211; the Alliance to End Plastic Waste &#8211; of doing next to nothing when it comes to removing plastics.\u00a0 The APEW includes many chemical and oil giants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/planet-tracker.org\/planet-tracker-questions-credibility-of-alliance-to-end-plastic-waste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>According to Planet Tracker<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201cIn the first three years of its five-year target, the AEPW achieved only 0.04% of its own goal to divert and recycle 9 million tonnes of plastic, but with 40% spend against budget.&#8221; (!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Turning to our own industry, aviation, climate change group Possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/may\/10\/just-one-of-50-aviation-industry-climate-targets-met-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>claimed in May<\/span><\/a><span> that 49\/50 sustainability airline sustainability targets that they researched had been missed, quietly shelved or delayed.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33668 \" src=\"https:\/\/simpliflying.com\/api\/media\/2022\/09\/science-based-targets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"671\" height=\"596\"\/><figcaption>Image from Air New Zealand<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s what makes a piece of recent news by Air New Zealand interesting and important.<\/p>\n<p><span>As part of its <\/span><span>Flight NZ0 sustainability campaign<\/span><span>, Air New Zealand announced that the airline\u2019s 2030 target of reducing carbon intensity by 28.9% from a 2019 baseline, would be validated by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span> Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Essentially SBTi <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebasedtargets.org\/how-it-works#how-do-you-validate-targets-as-science-based\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>works as a kind of environmental auditor. <\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0Organisations pay a fee, and submit their targets to a group of SBTi experts, who then assess it against their own criteria, and determine if it meets its science based targets to lower greenhouse gases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The SBTi is a heavyweight and more importantly independent body as it is a collaboration between CDP ( a global non-profit that drives companies and governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions,), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and WWF.<\/p>\n<p><span>Air New Zealand is not the first airline to have its targets assessed by SBTi, <\/span><span>that honour belongs to Air France\/KLM.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 Other airlines submitting their targets to SBTi include American and Delta.<\/p>\n<p>On all the airlines\u2019 part, it\u2019s a wise move as it starts to address the credibility problem we mentioned at the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to sustainability, one of the biggest problems any fossil fuel burning industry or company faces is that of credibility.
