There’s something uniquely satisfying about watching an overpowered protagonist who could end most fights in one move… but chooses to act average (or even weak) instead. Whether it’s for peace, to avoid trouble, or pure comedy, this trope never gets old in donghua.

If you already enjoy series with strong main characters, this list focuses specifically on those who actively hide their true power or keep a deliberately low profile. I’ve gathered some of the best examples below.

The Daily Life of the Immortal King

!["The]("https://yualexius.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/The-Daily-Life-of-the-Immortal-King-Season-4-Donghua.jpg" ""Donghua")

Wang Ling is a cultivation genius who reached levels most people only dream of while still a child. By the time he enters high school, he’s basically invincible. His biggest goal in life? Eat crispy noodle snacks in peace and live as an ordinary student.

Of course, the universe has other plans. This is the gold standard for the “OP MC who just wants a quiet life” trope — full of deadpan humor and chaotic situations that keep forcing him to reveal just a little more power than he wants.

Spare Me, Great Lord!

!["Spare]("https://yualexius.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Spare-Me-Great-Lord-Anime-Da-Wang-Rao-Ming-650x366.jpg" ""Donghua")

Lu Shu is a young man living in a modern world where supernatural abilities exist. He has serious power, but he prefers to keep it under wraps while navigating school, family, and the occasional apocalyptic threat. The comedy comes from how hard he tries to stay low-key while everything around him keeps escalating.

If you like smart, sarcastic MCs who are far stronger than they let on, this one delivers.

The protagonist is a true powerhouse from the cultivation world who ends up in a modern setting (or vice versa, depending on the arc). He constantly downplays his abilities and tries to live normally, only for the people around him to slowly realize something is very off.

It’s light, fun, and leans heavily into the “I just want to be ordinary but the world won’t let me” energy.

The Strongest Sect of All Time

The MC becomes the leader of a weak-looking sect while hiding the fact that he (and later his disciples) are anything but ordinary. The joy comes from watching outsiders underestimate them until it’s far too late.

Full-Time Magister

!["Full-Time]("https://yualexius.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Full-Time-Magister-Donghua-Mo-Fan-650x363.jpg" ""Donghua")
Mo Fan (Full-Time Magister)

While Mo Fan is more of a classic rising OP MC, there are stretches where he deliberately holds back or keeps certain abilities under wraps to avoid drawing too much attention from the major forces. It doesn’t stay low-key the entire series, but the early-to-mid arcs play with this idea effectively.

War God System! I’m Counting on You!

!["war]("https://yualexius.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/war-god-system-donghua-650x366.png" ""Donghua")

The MC gains a powerful system but often operates in a more restrained or strategic way rather than flexing full power constantly.

Hitori no Shita: The Outcast

!["22815]("https://yualexius.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/22815-hitori2bno2bshita2bthe2boutcast.jpg" ""Donghua")

Zhang Chulan has special abilities and often plays things carefully rather than going all-out immediately.

Why This Trope Works So Well in Donghua

Chinese animation loves the contrast between overwhelming power and the desire for a normal life. It creates natural comedy, tension, and those satisfying “reveal” moments when the MC finally stops holding back. It also lets the story explore themes of restraint, responsibility, and the loneliness of being too strong.

If you only watch one from this list, start with The Daily Life of the Immortal King — it is the purest and most consistent example of an OP MC who desperately wants to stay under the radar.

Spare Me, Great Lord! and I’m Actually a Cultivation Bigshot are excellent follow-ups if you want more of the same vibe with different flavors of humor.

Have you watched any of these? Which OP-but-low-key MC is your favorite? Drop your recommendations in the comments — I’m always looking for more titles that nail this trope!
