{"id":7068349,"date":"2026-09-27T12:04:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T12:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/investors-put-off-by-nigerias-piracy-problem\/"},"modified":"2026-09-27T12:04:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T12:04:17","slug":"investors-put-off-by-nigerias-piracy-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7068349","title":{"rendered":"Investors put off by Nigeria\u2019s piracy problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maritime chief pledges to lead the fight against piracy to counter the negative impact of attacks in the Gulf of Guinea which are deterring would-be investors in Nigeria\u2019s shipping sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>THE heightened risk piracy attacks in the Gulf of Guinea is putting progress in Nigeria\u2019s shipping sector on hold, with would-be investors deterred due to the heightened security issue.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Dakuka Peterside, director general of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, which is responsible for overseeing security under its scope of activities in the country\u2019s coastal waters, said the \u201cnegative impact\u201d of hijackings and kidnappings are stunting shipping\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>The only way that Nigeria can turn around its fortunes will be to change perceptions, a task that easier than done, he said at the West Africa Shipping Summit held as part of London International Shipping Week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to fix things. That&#8217;s the ultimate way to change perception about Nigeria and what&#8217;s going on in the Gulf of Guinea,\u201d Mr Peterside told Lloyd\u2019s List.<\/p>\n<p>He had said in June that the piracy issue in the region will be eradicated in a matter of months.<\/p>\n<p>Three months on and the upcoming piracy incident report published by industry watchdog for the third quarter of 2019 is likely to reveal more damning statistics of attacks in the Gulf of Guinea and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a class=\"click-utag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-ccs.org\/index.php\/1279-seas-off-west-africa-world-s-worst-for-pirate-attacks-imb-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Maritime Bureau<\/a>, around 73% of global kidnappings and 92% of global hostages are attributed to the region.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Nigeria witnessed 48 actual and attempted piracy attacks, up from 33 the previous year. In its latest report, the bureau ranked Nigeria again as the highest country of incidence with about 21 attacks out of 77 reported globally.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Peterside said that \u201cone act of piracy or maritime crime is bad enough\u201d, though he is adamant that the country is on the right as it looks to tackle the issue \u201chead on\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a plan. And that plan is now proceeding at a pace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Crucial to the plan being implemented by the country&#8217;s maritime authority is the training of specialised personnel, which he admitted takes time. While assets including aircraft, helicopters and vessels to join the fight are still in the process of being acquired.<\/p>\n<p>Once deployed though he believes that these will act as a deterrent and help to disincentivise so-called pirates from continuing with attacks and illegal activity in the Gulf of Guinea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you know you are likely to be caught and face the consequences the of the law, you know it will not be nice at all,\u201d said Dr Peterside.<\/p>\n<p>Following two major incidents in the Gulf of Guinea last month, which included the kidnapping of 17 seafarers off Cameroon and an attack on an LPG carrier off Nigeria within a matter of days, BIMCO chief executive Jakob Larsen said Nigeria should embrace international naval co-operation to curb piracy in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Peterside said that Nigeria is open to the idea of a naval coalition in the Gulf of Guinea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are welcome to all option to tackling piracy in the Gulf of Guinea as it is a matter that deserves priority and attention, and so any sort of partnership will not be ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lloydslist.maritimeintelligence.informa.com\/LL1129132\/Investors-put-off-by-Nigerias-piracy-problem\">Lloyds List<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maritime chief pledges to lead the fight against piracy to counter the negative impact of attacks in the Gulf of Guinea which are deterring would-be investors in Nigeria\u2019s shipping sector.
