We got a familiar face today. あびゅうきょ is an old-school mangaka, debuting way back in 1982 and working both commercially and as a dōjin circle. Apparently, they also hold a law degree, which is even nicer – I love when people got the balls to do a 180 on their life.

In the past (as in, a long, long time ago) I reviewed a number of dōjinshi by あびゅうきょ. They are definitely one of my favorite manga artists, sporting a very distinctive style that I guess I could sort of describe as ‘Hideo Azuma meets early Riichi Ueshiba’, conjugating a fixation on slightly super-deformed, well-endowed girls with an obsessive, painstaking rendering of outfits and backgrounds that leads to the whole that sort of underground, indie appeal I really dig.

And we are going way back with this one, no less than twenty-three years! Printed in the artist’s signature rough, matte paper, A5 format and full B&W, 阿佐谷妄想妖精 (something like Asagaya Delusional Fairy) delivers 26 pages on non-stop pinup cuties and meticulously rendered scenes liberally reinterpreting the Asagaya residential area of Tokyo — which is, apparently, mostly famous for its jazz bars and Tanabata festival.

Though the proportions might at times almost border into chibi, one has to admit that あびゅうきょ’s ‘delusiona fairies'(aka girls in variously scant fairy costumes) have a certain kind of retro charm; they are the kind of beauties one could imagine in a late 70s – early 80s anime. The landscapes do occasionally resemble real life locations, though they are also inhabited by the abstract, Okamoto-ish shapes that are also typical of あびゅうきょ’s stuff. Surprisingly little text, another thing the mangaka usually loves to crowd the pages with, but that’s no big deal, as each scene is so stuff with eye candy I can’t really see where one could put text… rounding up the dōjinshi are a few older illustrations, dating all the way back to 1995.

Another solid one from a great (and very prolific) mangaka. The JP wiki has an extensive article, in case you’re interested.
