Following my al fresco, <b>AI-approved<\/b>, pasty and<br \/>\ncoffee lunch, I set off along <b>Cliffe High Street,<\/b> crossing the ornate bridge<br \/>\nover the river <b>Ouse,<\/b> with the iconic view of <b>Harvey&#8217;s Brewery<\/b> to my left. I<br \/>\nthen turned directly opposite into the narrow road leading to the <b>John Harvey<br \/>\nTavern,<\/b> a charming establishment that has mellowed beautifully over the years.<br \/>\nAlthough a relatively new addition to the <b>Harvey\u2019s<\/b> tied estate, the pub has<br \/>\nmatured into a thriving two-bar establishment housed in a building faced with<br \/>\nlocal flints.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjCeh-uUBiEB0_70UUPVaxKBUi8aUSOnI7uS9xqI_Ar7JmjyXHXV-jktxv5OX1hM0ttIvUCs98iIf0xGw0r02a-W0nlkCdiKZBN6wjJFr-IwNsyz4qof4UQYDE1W_-PXqhUWEtt9ZRUlTzsb88PVUjyiExq_3iHS8_J6CYYGrPWZkXHxmarS8fqj-IlYIg\/s3810\/John%20Harvey%20bar.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2285\" data-original-width=\"3810\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjCeh-uUBiEB0_70UUPVaxKBUi8aUSOnI7uS9xqI_Ar7JmjyXHXV-jktxv5OX1hM0ttIvUCs98iIf0xGw0r02a-W0nlkCdiKZBN6wjJFr-IwNsyz4qof4UQYDE1W_-PXqhUWEtt9ZRUlTzsb88PVUjyiExq_3iHS8_J6CYYGrPWZkXHxmarS8fqj-IlYIg\/w400-h240\/John%20Harvey%20bar.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I opted for the room on the right, which houses the main<br \/>\nbar, whereas the room opposite is more of an overspill area, that is handy for<br \/>\ndiners. There is also a large upstairs room, a fact I recall from a<br \/>\npresentation evening I attended a couple of decades ago. That was when <b>Mrs.<br \/>\nPBT\u2019s<\/b> and I had our own off-licence in <b>Tonbridge<\/b> and had an account with<br \/>\n<b>Harvey&#8217;s<\/b>. We regularly bought draft and bottled beers, as well as a range of<br \/>\ninteresting wines, which is what led to the invitation. You can read the story<br \/>\nof that evening here, but spoiler alert most of it passed in an alcoholic haze,<br \/>\nlargely due to a surfeit of vintage port.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <b>John Harvey Tavern<\/b> provided an excellent venue for the<br \/>\npresentation and the drinks, and whilst I\u2019ve made several return visits since,<br \/>\nstepping inside the pub is a guaranteed to bring a smile to my face, as I<br \/>\nrecall that rather boozy evening. The <b>Tavern<\/b> is always a pleasant place to be,<br \/>\ngiven its tucked away location close to the river and virtually opposite the<br \/>\nbrewery yard. Several <b>Harvey\u2019s <\/b>beers were on tap that day, as you can see from<br \/>\nthe photo, but my tipple of choice was <b>Lewes Castle Brown Ale,<\/b> a beer not often<br \/>\nseen in cask form but tasty and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjLQaavOR5AZzsfwR1RPOa-X_lRSO21dK6v26jvBe0KqHJmUmZGtWnyKI4SR-9in7C7wQ7CCrp3ewSEBhWgfK4HPGXvTEAUWYMzrdkk0ceZ_4We1U0ilYNt3eXl-rP8OVVuIKJkJT9J4o3JZJpZcvktmyBJupyVssh6HMuhQnloTjXHIT8fmHtrk32XPyU\/s3451\/Gardeners%20Ext.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2217\" data-original-width=\"3451\" height=\"258\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjLQaavOR5AZzsfwR1RPOa-X_lRSO21dK6v26jvBe0KqHJmUmZGtWnyKI4SR-9in7C7wQ7CCrp3ewSEBhWgfK4HPGXvTEAUWYMzrdkk0ceZ_4We1U0ilYNt3eXl-rP8OVVuIKJkJT9J4o3JZJpZcvktmyBJupyVssh6HMuhQnloTjXHIT8fmHtrk32XPyU\/w400-h258\/Gardeners%20Ext.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Moving further along <b>Cliffe High Street,<\/b> takes the thirsty<br \/>\nvisitor to the <b>Gardener&#8217;s Arms<\/b>, a small, but thriving pub that has long been<br \/>\nregarded as <b>Lewes&#8217;s<\/b> premier, independent ale house. The <b>Gardener\u2019s <\/b>consists of<br \/>\ntwo, quite basic rooms &#8211; a front bar and a back bar with a serving area in the<br \/>\nmiddle. Serving up to four different ever-changing cask ales, it attracts many<br \/>\nlocal characters. During my relatively short stay at the bar, I engaged with a<br \/>\ncouple of local wags, plus a barmaid who clearly knew both her beers, as well<br \/>\nas keeping customers in order.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiffKucJBWbLMKygNnG1-DLjBKj-KN1CgWPf7AQ0j-xoCZiS2dFRQFADy7lajSnbApDBzECoirgEkkqABbOUFQR4sfykKZ44offK3Dtom3iYlBWjFL6Ob-rFxQqhaBWcbwp2-5M50E25P2t1seEKyA7CYXIWslLupyeyNQtveUPKuSCnfIYdWscuf7aJ1Q\/s3598\/Gardeners%20bar.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2097\" data-original-width=\"3598\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEiffKucJBWbLMKygNnG1-DLjBKj-KN1CgWPf7AQ0j-xoCZiS2dFRQFADy7lajSnbApDBzECoirgEkkqABbOUFQR4sfykKZ44offK3Dtom3iYlBWjFL6Ob-rFxQqhaBWcbwp2-5M50E25P2t1seEKyA7CYXIWslLupyeyNQtveUPKuSCnfIYdWscuf7aJ1Q\/w400-h234\/Gardeners%20bar.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t quite as impressed though with the beer she<br \/>\nrecommended, as a substitute for the <b>Burning Sky, Plateau,<\/b> advertised on the<br \/>\nchalkboard outside. The latter unfortunately, had just ran out, and the 4.0%<br \/>\nHip-Hop from <b>Langham Brewery,<\/b> was far too citrusy for my liking. I&#8217;m not very<br \/>\nfamiliar with Langham beers, and I\u2019m not even sure where the place is. One<br \/>\nlocal claimed that it\u2019s near <b>Chichester, <\/b>but regardless of its origin, it<br \/>\nwasn\u2019t the beer for me. Crossing the road,\u00a0I<br \/>\nwalked back up the steep <b>School Hill,<\/b> which was enough to get my heart pounding<br \/>\nand legs aching. At the top, I turned right into <b>Fisher Street,<\/b> passed a<br \/>\nnow-closed pub, whose name escapes me, located near the <b>War Memorial.<\/b> I<br \/>\nremember visiting it once on <b>November 5<sup>th<\/sup><\/b> and actually getting<br \/>\nserved\u2014not always easy if you weren\u2019t a member of a local bonfire society. The<br \/>\npub I was looking for was the <b>Elephant and Castle,<\/b> and the vague idea I had of<br \/>\nits location, on the northern flank of the imposing <b>Lewes Castle <\/b>mound, turned<br \/>\nout to be correct. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhgiADXn5Yux3tGdNfnmjqqqsAXupQBDTGjIevyT86LgkUHZgzofUX6CFKmbM2of4fv2jYRoHXmq5Kaon81HnBMuV1wlQqKWcRexBVBoF-fAglgEgTTCUSa0PDOVWQpT83v_vsXL8AWocfYpdmQDg44IAe_A1kWMgBSv0t3ZvKJ9561534HfJwbBLGrSNo\/s3900\/Lewes%20back%20street%20Beards.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2144\" data-original-width=\"3900\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhgiADXn5Yux3tGdNfnmjqqqsAXupQBDTGjIevyT86LgkUHZgzofUX6CFKmbM2of4fv2jYRoHXmq5Kaon81HnBMuV1wlQqKWcRexBVBoF-fAglgEgTTCUSa0PDOVWQpT83v_vsXL8AWocfYpdmQDg44IAe_A1kWMgBSv0t3ZvKJ9561534HfJwbBLGrSNo\/w400-h220\/Lewes%20back%20street%20Beards.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, the pub was closed, boarded up and looking a<br \/>\nbit sorry for itself. I&#8217;m not sure why it closed, or when it ceased training,<br \/>\nbut looking at the condition of the building, I would say the closure took<br \/>\nplace quite recently. According to the <b>Harvey\u2019s website,<\/b> the <b>Elephant &amp;<br \/>\nCastle <\/b>belongs to the brewery, and is described as a traditional <b>Lewes<\/b> pub,<br \/>\nthat was built in <b>1838.<\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\">Selling four\u00a0cask ales alongside a number of<br \/>\ncraft beers, and a <b>Good Beer Guide<\/b> pub for <b>15 years<\/b>. Home of <b>Commercial Square<br \/>\nBonfire Society,<\/b> with good, home cooked food served daily, plus the best pub<br \/>\nfunction room in<b> Lewes.<\/b> So why is the place closed? I\u2019m talking about the <b>Lewes Arms<\/b>, an attractive brick-built pub<br \/>\nwith a prominent rounded corner, close to the former <b>Beards Brewery<\/b> in <b>Star<br \/>\nLane<\/b>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>A quick side step before we<br \/>\nmove onto the <b>Lewes Arms. Beards<\/b> were a company that had opted out of brewing<br \/>\nin <b>1958,<\/b> primarily because their cramped, town-centre brewery, was suffering<br \/>\nfrom a lack of space and, more seriously, a yeast infection. <b>Beards<\/b> felt that by pooling resources with <b>Harvey\u2019s,<\/b><br \/>\nthe future of both companies would be assured. <b>Harvey\u2019s<\/b> would benefit from the<br \/>\nincreased capacity, whilst <b>Beards<\/b> would not have the bother of having to brew<br \/>\nthe beer themselves.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhI8KnrkE3R-qs2tu2D4ftlwpS3wUxrJMRZ8GzuDldkOjDMbmNtYG11-6pEAvXgV1FNkOYq3_ROFJDhZps0SdmFJpnBL-HqOV1n30fH8roKUblESpoKTJfnnVlgFN092pr_Q5hKDufAZ8KtjxEx2KbP2tch__yI7uq55j0fbfHJL60SiGuO9M04yh1EGIk\/s3032\/Lewes%20Arms%20ext.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2144\" data-original-width=\"3032\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhI8KnrkE3R-qs2tu2D4ftlwpS3wUxrJMRZ8GzuDldkOjDMbmNtYG11-6pEAvXgV1FNkOYq3_ROFJDhZps0SdmFJpnBL-HqOV1n30fH8roKUblESpoKTJfnnVlgFN092pr_Q5hKDufAZ8KtjxEx2KbP2tch__yI7uq55j0fbfHJL60SiGuO9M04yh1EGIk\/w400-h283\/Lewes%20Arms%20ext.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This arrangement lasted until <b>1986,<\/b> when <b>Beards <\/b>pubs<b><br \/>\n<\/b>became free to choose from a wide range of different cask ales supplied by<br \/>\nthe company\u2019s wholesaling division. This side of the business was later sold<br \/>\noff; becoming the well-known wholesaling company <b>The Beer Seller. <\/b>In the<br \/>\nsummer of <b>1998, Beard &amp; Co<\/b> agreed the sale of their entire tied<br \/>\nestate to <b>Greene King,<\/b> and the company to all intents and purposes<br \/>\nceased to exist. It was rumoured that <b>Harvey\u2019s<\/b> were somewhat put out<br \/>\nby this deal, as not only did they lose their supply contract with <b>Beards<\/b>, but<br \/>\nthey also lost the chance to buy the company\u2019s pubs. <b>Harvey\u2019s,<\/b> had been under<br \/>\nthe impression they would get <b><i>\u201cfirst refusal\u201d<\/i><\/b> on the <b>Beards<br \/>\nestate, <\/b>should it ever come up for sale, although <b>Harvey\u2019s<\/b> have never<br \/>\nopenly admitted this. The <b>Beards<\/b> brewery buildings still stand, although they<br \/>\nhave now been converted into an arts centre alongside spaces for a number of<br \/>\nsmall businesses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhLkocowi_kcj8gZsLSjsCd6NpBjLfd-cRUwaDOjVyaaFQGsaMNfIMDoTENdQKhlrNit8vhmATQ0XAjXtrdqgITRUBUl3dp19oqIyhvhkOfRCa-8DOvKYI4TyhQ-B5ZNHlMrkE3lJ9cO-HjW5A6LUrGy2tWbLMiLXMhGAbMryhmRD9V3fHHEULhzWUMcbU\/s3883\/Lewes%20Arms%20Int.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2273\" data-original-width=\"3883\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhLkocowi_kcj8gZsLSjsCd6NpBjLfd-cRUwaDOjVyaaFQGsaMNfIMDoTENdQKhlrNit8vhmATQ0XAjXtrdqgITRUBUl3dp19oqIyhvhkOfRCa-8DOvKYI4TyhQ-B5ZNHlMrkE3lJ9cO-HjW5A6LUrGy2tWbLMiLXMhGAbMryhmRD9V3fHHEULhzWUMcbU\/w400-h234\/Lewes%20Arms%20Int.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Back to the pub, and last <b>Friday<\/b> the <b>Lewes Arms<\/b> was serving beers from <b>Fuller&#8217;s, St. Austell,<\/b> and <b>Gale\u2019s.<\/b> When I arrived, the pub was quiet,<br \/>\nwith just a handful of middle-aged drinkers chatting in the front bar, passing<br \/>\nthe time of day and sharing the banter. I settled in the rear bar, which was a<br \/>\nnice cosy and comfortable space, albeit with a view through the glass, into the<br \/>\nfront bar.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I stayed for a pint of<br \/>\nSeafarers, which was in good condition, before making my way past the sprawling<br \/>\n<b>Beards<\/b> complex and heading back down to <b>High Street. <\/b>It was then on to the<br \/>\nstation and the train home, but not before one final pint. You might recall<br \/>\nfrom my previous post, that the bus journey down to <b>Lewes,<\/b> was something of a<br \/>\ndrag &#8211; not quite a complete nightmare, but it felt as though it went on<br \/>\nforever. I was tempted to nip in, but it<br \/>\nwas getting late, and I had promised <b>Mrs PBT\u2019s<\/b> that I\u2019d be back in time for<br \/>\ntea. I therefore gave the <b>Royal Oak<\/b> a miss and continued to the bottom of the<br \/>\nhill and called in at the <b>Landsdown<\/b> instead. Located conveniently close to<br \/>\n<b>Lewes<\/b> station, the <b>Lansdown Arms<\/b> is a quirky pub, with a raised floor area at<br \/>\nthe far end. I have<br \/>\nmade several visits to the <b>Landsdown, <\/b>over the years, and have always found it<br \/>\nto have a real local feel, without being too cliquey.
