Fall is my most favorite time of the year, especially <\/span>hear<\/span> in New England near the mountains of New Hampshire. The foliage here is outstanding<\/span>! \u00a0<\/span>When our host, Wendy of A Day in the Life on the Farm, wanted to feature fall Italian wine and food pairings for this month’s theme for Italian Food, Wine and Travel (#ItalianFWT) how <\/span>could I not join despite my lack of free time these days<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>I decided to feature a Bardolino wine<\/span> even though <\/span>I do <\/span>tend to <\/span>recommend<\/span> th<\/span>ese wines<\/span> as <\/span>one of those Italian red wines that you very easily can enjoy even in the warmer days<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>Let\u2019s take a look at this <\/span>wine<\/span> further and how I chose to pair Bardolino with food.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If <\/span>you\u2019ve<\/span> been fortunate enough to visit the Lake Garda territory that sits between the regions of the Veneto and Lombardy wine <\/span>regions,<\/span> you may have stumbled across where Bardolino wines come<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>The town of Bardolino is <\/span>located<\/span> on the southeastern side of Lake Garda <\/span>and is situated between <\/span>Peschiera<\/span> del Garda and Garda<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The proximity of this wine territory in Bardolino is <\/span>rather mild<\/span>
\n and Mediterranean moderated by Lake Garda and the mountains to the
\nnorth creating a perfect microclimate for these wines to grow<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>The vineyards are set in the hills outside the <\/span>shoreline<\/span> made up of ancient glacial morainic soils that are gravelly and full of clay and limestone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Bardolino DOC was <\/span>established<\/span> in 1968 and became a Superiore DOCG later in 2001<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>You will find a <\/span>couple of<\/span> styles of <\/span>wines<\/span> grown here<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>The Bardolino <\/span>DOC classic style like the one <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> sharing today and a <\/span>Chiaretto<\/span> di Bardolino DOC, which is produced with the same grapes used to make Bardolino, but in a rose style with mi<\/span>nimal skin contact<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Today we\u2019ll focus on the Bardolino DOC <\/span>wines in particular which can be comprised o<\/span>f<\/span> three grapes: Corvina, <\/span>Rondinella<\/span> and <\/span>Molinara<\/span>. These grapes may sound <\/span>very familiar<\/span> to you if <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> used to drinking the wines of the Valpolicella wine <\/span>region since<\/span> they are the same grapes used in varying degrees to make<\/span> the wines that hail from the<\/span> Valpolicella wine<\/span> territory<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Although, <\/span>when <\/span>these grapes <\/span>are <\/span>used to produce Bardolino <\/span>wines, they <\/span>tend to be lighter in body<\/span>,<\/span> more fresh on the palate with soft tannins, high <\/span>acidity<\/span> and red fruits (cherry and red currants)<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>They are very food friendly as well.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span>I even recommend giving these wines a slight <\/span>chill<\/span> and that is <\/span>wh<\/span>y <\/span>for<\/span> red wine drinkers that still w<\/span>ant<\/span> a red wine in the summer, but something that <\/span>isn\u2019t<\/span> too heavy, Bardolino is perfect for you!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This Weeks Wine Selection<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This week <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> sharing the <\/span><\/span>2024 Zeni Bardolino <\/span>Classic DOC<\/span> \u201cMr. Lake\u201d<\/span><\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>This wine is made from 60% Rondinella and 40% Corvina<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> not su<\/span>re what the \u201cMr. Lake\u201d <\/span>represents<\/span>, but <\/span>maybe it\u2019s<\/span> to catch the <\/span>consumer\u2019s<\/span> eye <\/span>representing<\/span> Lake Garda<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> an easy open with a screw <\/span>cap. \u00a0<\/span>The wine is aged in stainless steel<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>A transparent pale ruby color<\/span> with aromas of bright cherry.<\/span> <\/span>This wine is lighter in <\/span>body<\/span>, fresh and easy <\/span>drinking<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>Smooth with juicy red fruit with a touch of pepper<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>ABV 12.5%, SRP $14<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Food pairing with Bardolino<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As
\n much as I wanted to cook an authentic dish typical of the region to
\npair with this Bardolino, my schedule had something different in mind<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span> <\/span>We\u2018<\/span>re on the football field 4-5 nights a week so the fact that we<\/span> could even enjoy this dish was a pleasure<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>No rest for the weary!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I had some chicken sausage that I wanted to grill up while also <\/span>utilizing<\/span> some of the zucchini from my garden<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>I decided to<\/span> make a simple marinara sauce along with pasta <\/span>t<\/span>o <\/span>eventually <\/span>combine all the ingredients <\/span>to<\/span>gether to <\/span>pair with the Bardolino<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>The chicken sausage had a little bit of pepper in <\/span>it, but<\/span> complemented the Bardolino just fine<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span>Bardolino is <\/span>a wine that I <\/span>wouldn\u2019t<\/span> pair <\/span>with<\/span> to<\/span>o<\/span> <\/span>h<\/span>eavy <\/span> of<\/span> a <\/span>dish<\/span>, but<\/span> has the versatility to go with many dishes<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
