Wolfquest is one of the oldest survival games out there, and it is being supported to this very day. It’s honestly impressive how much effort has gone into Wolfquest: Anniversary Edition, and while I’m between projects, it was the right time to check it out. Big thanks to the devs on Keymailer for accepting my request, on that note!

I’ve been working on a bunch of games lately, and this is the busiest quarter I think anyone in the industry has had in years. With a glutton of AAA releases trampling each other to avoid the GTA6 juggernaut, we have no choice but to pick our battles carefully! Anyway, onto the review. I’ve been playing Wolfquest for a while now, and despite its age, the game holds up incredibly well. I’ll be covering the Anniversary Edition as it’s a full remake of the original game, although they give you the original on Steam as well, which is nice.

"wolfquest"

WolfQuest is, in a nutshell, a life sim that does exactly what it says on the tin: you play as a grey wolf in the Yellowstone National Park. There’s no human elements to usual survival things in here like building a base and crafting, because do you see a wolf crafting a pickaxe? As we can imagine, Wolfquest involves more authentic experiences about surviving as a wolf, and it’s the realistic gameplay that immersed me into the game.

This realism delves into the core mechanics of Wolfquest as well. Instead of building a base, you spend your time raising your pack and hunting for food, finding a mate, and expanding your territory to survive. Yellowstone is more than just a backdrop, as animals exhibit their own behaviors and routines with as much realism as possible. Elk move in herds, wolves establish territories, prey reproduce, and predators compete for food. Environmental factors like weather, seasons, and the day/night cycle contribute to a sense of living in a real world.

The wolf simulation itself is incredibly in-depth. You don’t just control a wolf-shaped avatar; you utilize scent trails to locate prey, carefully select targets, strategize hunts, interact with other wolves, establish territory, and nurture pups. A genetics system further enhances realism, allowing offspring to inherit characteristics such as coat color, eye color, physical attributes, and personality traits.

""

Immersion is where WolfQuest truly shines. There’s a relaxing quality to traversing Yellowstone, following scents, listening to distant howls, observing herds, or playing with pups. It avoids constantly bombarding the player with objectives, dialogue, or scripted events, like most survival games. On that front, WolfQuest is unique while staying surprisingly educational. The developers spent plenty of time with wolf biologists and using real wildlife research into building their game, and that passion and care for the subject shows in every form.

As with all games, WolfQuest isn’t perfect, and as much immersion and realism is put into the game, it does come at a cost. There isn’t much that can be done regarding the repetition of the core gameplay, as the activities such as raising pups, sleeping, eating and hunting can get a little monotonous as time passes. I also wish the hunting mechanics were a little more entertaining. Hunting primarily involves positioning, stamina management, prey selection, and risk assessment, rather than complex combat maneuvers. The combat is a little simplistic, although it is no dealbreaker.

Finally, WolfQuest also takes a while to learn, requiring players to understand scent trails, prey behavior, wolf territories, pack dynamics, and pup needs. While rewarding, you will need to put a lot of time into learning the game.

Ultimately, WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition is a niche game that does an amazing job in its main role: living as a wolfpack. There is nothing else on the market that achieves this specific area, although its unique nature makes it harder to recommend for players who want a more traditional survival experience. Still, the price tag of $29.99 is fair for what you are getting.
