The only question is whether your media plans went with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside celebrity appearances and new content announcements, including the confirmation that Netflix will air a heavyweight boxing match between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in December, there were a few big updates on the ads front.\u00a0 Perhaps the biggest of these was the news that Netflix\u2019s ads tier is coming to nine new European markets next March: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The streamer is also continuing to expand its in-house ad tech stack Netflix Ads Suite with new data collaboration tools, measurement solutions, and formats. Pause ads will be available programmatically via the ads suite next month, and Netflix says it is expanding demographic targeting capabilities to include income and household consumption.<\/p>\n<p><b>Higgsfield on Track for $1 Billion Run Rate in AI Video Boom<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the race to establish generative AI video tools, Higgsfield has emerged as one of the leading startups in the space, announcing this week that the company is on track to generate annualised revenue of more than $1 billion based on current performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Mashrabov, CEO and Co-Founder of Higgsfield, and former Head of Generative AI at Snap, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-09-24\/ai-video-startup-higgsfield-eyes-1-billion-in-12-month-sales\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the milestone is driven by strong demand from direct-to-consumer brands, describing a \u201csnowball effect\u201d in customer spending. \u201cAs soon as businesses see a positive return on investment from AI-generated ads, they keep generating more and more,\u201d said Mashrabov.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August, Higgsfield closed a $400 million Series B funding round at a $5.4 billion valuation, including backing from S4S Ventures, a venture capital firm co-founded by Sanja Partalo and Sir Martin Sorrell. Partalo said the business stood out among other AI video companies, offering a solution for brands that need to produce vast amounts of content at speed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Over Half of YouTube\u2019s UK Watch Time is Now on TV Screens<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve heard plenty about YouTube\u2019s growing presence in the living room over the past few years, but the data backing this narrative has largely come from the US, namely from Nielsen\u2019s \u2018The Gauge\u2019 reports and YouTube\u2019s own figures.<\/p>\n<p>At its UK-based YouTube Festival this week, the company shared fresh UK-specific data to stake its claim to a seat at the CTV table. Research from Ipsos found that 30.5 million British adults watch YouTube on a TV screen, while connected TV viewing has risen to an average of 43 minutes per day. With YouTube\u2019s UK audience spending an average of 85 minutes on the platform each day, that means\u00a0 TV screens account for just over half of all viewing.<\/p>\n<p>The video giant also used the event to announce the UK launch of YouTube Creator Shows, through which brands can buy exclusive sponsorships and other integrations into a new slate of made-for-YouTube programming \u2014 the type of content which is more likely to be watched on a TV set. Another new product, Open Call, will use AI to pair creative briefs with relevant creators signed up to the YouTube Partner Programme.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Week in Tech<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><b>Meta Files Legal Challenge Against Ofcom Over Online Safety Act<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meta has launched a legal challenge against Ofcom, the UK\u2019s media regulator, to appeal against the watchdog\u2019s move to place WhatsApp and Instagram in a category that subjects them to additional duties. Under the new obligations established by the Online Safety Act, the tech giant must implement measures to protect users from fraudulent advertising and illegal content on the platforms. \u201cLike many others in the industry, including TikTok, Roblox, X and Quora, we are challenging specific aspects of implementation,\u201d said a Meta spokesperson. \u201cThese are not challenges to the law itself, but how Ofcom has interpreted it. This is a normal feature of any new regulatory regime being bedded in and ensures questions of process, scope and implementation get settled so the law is applied proportionately, accurately and consistently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Germany\u2019s AGF to Combine HbbTV Return-Channel Data with Measurement Panel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AGF Videoforschung, the German TV measurement body, is to integrate HbbTV-based return-channel data into its national audience measurement system, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadbandtvnews.com\/2026\/09\/18\/agf-to-integrate-hbbtv-return-channel-data-into-german-tv-measurement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broadband TV News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as part of an overhaul of AGF\u2019s research system that is scheduled to enter operation from 2028. By combining its representative panel measurement with anonymised usage data collected directly from CTV devices, AGF aims to improve the representation of fragmented viewing environments, particularly for smaller offerings and niche target groups. The data is currently modelled on more than 1.7 million devices with actual measured usage, and will be expanded to cover around 3.4 million measured devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Spotify Expands Partner Program in Video Push<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spotify is expanding its podcast monetisation program to more than 35 additional countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Poland and Colombia. The program enables qualifying creators to earn money through subscription and ad revenue sharing, while keeping 100 percent of the revenue they generate from their own sponsorship arrangements. The Partner Program is also geared towards creators producing video, compensating them through Premium video revenue while serving Premium subscribers with an uninterrupted viewing experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scope3 Becomes Apostra in AI Pivot\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scope3, the company founded in 2022 to measure carbon emissions in advertising supply chains, has announced it is rebranding to \u2018Apostra\u2019, reflecting its AI pivot. CEO Brian O\u2019Kelley told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/programmatic\/scope3s-rebrand-to-apostra-solidifies-shift-from-sustainability-to-ai\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adweek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Apostra\u2019s agentic platform already handles automated media buys for some \u201cvery large\u201d brands across markets including the US, UK, Brazil and France, totalling around $1.2 million over the last three months. O\u2019Kelley also responded to accusations of hypocrisy in pivoting the company away from sustainability and into AI, given the environmental impact of the technology. \u201cDo you think that that might be holding me to a double standard versus every single other person who uses AI? Just because I tried to solve a problem,\u201d he said. \u201cThe \u2018Haha, Brian O\u2019Kelley failed when he tried to do something good for the world,\u2019 really is getting tiresome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nexxen Launches TV Home Screen Buying Across EMEA\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexxen, a CTV ad tech business, has launched its Nexxen TV Home Screen offering across EMEA, enabling advertisers and agencies to programmatically activate native Smart TV inventory on VIDAA-powered TVs through Nexxen DSP. The company said agencies including PHD EMEA are already using the solution for clients such as Uber Eats. \u201cThrough Nexxen TV Home Screen, clients like Uber Eats have been able to place their brands at the centre of the living room experience with premium, high-impact placements that deliver scale and visibility during major cultural moments,\u201d said Shakeel Abrahams, Digital Planning Director, PHD EMEA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mediaocean Announces Investment Arm for Scaling AI Startups<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mediaocean, an omnichannel advertising business, has launched Mediaocean AI Ventures, an investment vehicle for scaling AI-based advertising startups. Backed by CVC Capital Partners, TA Associates and Eterna Growth Partners, Mediaocean AI Ventures is \u201cdesigned to help the next generation of AI companies achieve global scale\u201d, according to the company. \u201cSome of the most transformative companies in advertising will be built in the next few years,\u201d said Mediaocean CEO Bill Wise. \u201cWe want to find those companies early and give them something far more valuable than capital alone \u2013 a path to scale. Mediaocean AI Ventures is about combining the speed and innovation of startups with the reach, infrastructure, and AI ecosystem of Mediaocean to help build the next generation of advertising technology.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Azerion Combines SSP and Monetisation Services in New Publisher Suite<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Azerion, an omnichannel ad tech firm, has launched a unified publisher suite, bringing together its supply-side technology and monetisation services into a single solution for publishers. The company said the 51Did promises to enhance consumer privacy, create a more efficient digital advertising supply chain, and allow Open Web businesses to compete with the platforms on a level playing field. The identifier will be available for free for the first 12 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>On Device Brings Brand Lift Studies to Index Exchange\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Device, a measurement firm, has partnered with Index Exchange to make brand lift studies available through Index Marketplaces, the sell-side platform\u2019s (SSP) curated marketplace. Index customers in EMEA and APAC will be able to commission independent studies that measure the impact of their campaigns based on On Device\u2019s passive measurement technology. \u201cAdvertisers increasingly need measurement they can trust to understand what\u2019s genuinely driving campaign effectiveness,\u201d said Sarah Robson, Global Head of Advertising Effectiveness at On Device. \u201cOur partnership with Index Exchange makes independent, high-quality brand lift measurement more accessible, helping advertisers connect media investment to real brand outcomes and use those insights to make smarter decisions moving forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>DAIVID Launches Solution to Analyse Creative Impact on Outcomes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DAIVID, a creative optimisation company, has launched a new solution designed to analyse \u201cthousands of ads at once\u201d and provide insights into the creative elements that drive campaign outcomes. Creative Audit uses DAIVID\u2019s AI-powered technology to analyse up to 5,000 creative assets at once, assessing attention, emotion, brand recall, consideration and purchase intent. These signals are then correlated with outcome data, including media performance, social engagement, brand lift and sales, to identify the creative characteristics associated with stronger results, according to the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Week in TV<\/h2>\n<p><strong>MFE Plays to TV\u2019s Strengths with Cross-European Simultaneous Reach Ad Format<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday MFE Advertising, MFE\u2019s international ad sales house, announced the launch of ALL21 Total Video Europe, a cross-country advertising solution. The offering is designed to deliver simultaneous reach across linear TV and premium digital video environments in Italy, Spain and Germany, through a single campaign. The ALL21 format creates a unique burst of mass simultaneous reach for a specific spot, by playing the same ad (or ads) during a 60 second break synchronised across channels (at 21:00, hence the name). <a href=\"https:\/\/videoweek.com\/2026\/09\/23\/mfe-plays-to-tvs-strengths-with-cross-european-simultaneous-reach-ad-format\/\">Read more on VideoWeek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Paramount Settles US Lawsuit to Clear WBD Acquisition<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paramount Skydance has settled its lawsuit with a dozen US states, clearing the path for its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery (WBD), which is expected to close in around two weeks. Under the agreement, Paramount must produce at least 30 films each year, ensuring that a certain percentage are made in the US, or face penalties including selling off parts of its business. California\u2019s attorney general Rob Bonta said that Paramount must also \u201cestablish a news editorial independence board to support CBS News and CNN\u2019s continued editorial independence to ensure independent, objective, fact-based reporting at CBS News and at CNN\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Seven.One Media Adds Data Partners for Targeting Campaigns on Joyn\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven.One Media, ProSiebenSat.1\u2019s sales house, has announced new data partnerships designed to enhance targeting of ad campaigns on the Joyn streaming service. The new data partners include the online platform kleinanzeigen, consumer data provider GEMINI DIRECT, and global commerce intelligence company Criteo. \u201cBy combining our own data, such as from Joyn, with high-quality retail and partner data, we\u2019re significantly expanding our capabilities for data-driven campaigns on the big screen and in our premium environments,\u201d said Markus Messerer, Chief Operating Officer &amp; Managing Director at Seven.One Media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Paramount Brings Live and On-Demand Content Together on Pluto TV<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pluto TV, the Paramount-owned free AVOD service, is redesigning the streaming app to combine live and on-demand content within the user interface (UI). The redesign is built on a shared technology foundation with the Paramount+ SVOD service, marking an \u201cimportant step in Paramount\u2019s convergence strategy,\u201d according to Paramount. \u201cFor advertisers, registration and stronger first-party signals can support a deeper understanding of audiences and more relevant advertising,\u201d the company said in the announcement. \u201cFor content partners, improved discovery creates more opportunities for programming to reach the right viewers across live and on-demand environments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RTL Deutschland and Sky Deutschland to Cut 500 Jobs<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RTL Deutschland and Sky Deutschland are set to cut around 500 jobs by the end of 2027, RTL confirmed this week, as part of the merger between German broadcasters. RTL Group is aiming to generate annual synergies of \u20ac250 million within three years following the acquisition. \u201cThe largest part of this comes from optimising content and non-content costs,\u201d RTL said in a statement. \u201cIn addition, duplicate structures will be eliminated, responsibilities bundled and more efficient and future-oriented decision-making processes created.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Disney Rolls Out Playlists and Expands Ad Tier<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disney+ has announced the global roll-out of a new Playlists feature, bringing together themed collections of episodes and movies into a continuous viewing experience, curated by genre, franchise, character or mood. Also this week, Disney+ announced it will launch an ad-supported subscription plan in Austria and Poland in November. Meanwhile in the US, Disney is upping the streaming service\u2019s price by 13 percent, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-09-23\/disney-hikes-price-by-13-to-21-49-a-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions Targets Further 19 Percent Carbon Footprint Reduction<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions, France\u2019s public service broadcaster (PSB), is targeting a further 19 percent reduction in carbon emissions between 2025 and 2031, under a new ecological transition plan published on Tuesday. The PSB has already cut its carbon footprint by 11 percent since 2021, according to the broadcaster. While acknowledging that some 62 percent of emissions are outside the company\u2019s control, including the energy used by TVs, smartphones and tablets, the company is focused on emissions associated with France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions\u2019 core activities, which account for around one one-third of the total.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>TF1 PUB Launches Full-Screen Ad Format on TF1+ Login Page<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TF1 PUB, TF1\u2019s sales house, has launched the \u2018Profile Wall\u2019 ad format on the TF1+ streaming service. Profile Wall is integrated into the TF1+ multi-profile login page on CTV devices, providing a full-screen placement at the moment the user accesses the streaming service. FWD and Havas Play have deployed the inaugural placement for Maison Parfums Christian Dior.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Week for Publishers<\/h2>\n<p><strong>MGM Considers Bid for People Inc.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hotel and casino group MGM Resorts is considering making a bid for media group People Inc., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/hospitality\/mgm-resorts-eyeing-bid-for-barry-dillers-people-incorporated-b506c037\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported this week, shortly after People Inc. itself withdrew its own bid to buy MGM. People already owns a 27 percent stake in MGM Resorts, and had been sizing up a full takeover, framed by chairman Barry Diller as a form of hedged diversification. A proposal could be submitted in the coming days, according to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hearst UK Returns to Revenue Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Magazine business Hearst UK returned to revenue growth in 2025, bucking the trend of the previous three years, according to accounts filed by its parent company The National Magazine Company. Digital advertising delivered double-digit growth for the business, which the group said was supported by partnerships and a rebound in audience across most of its brands. Print revenues also rose for the second year running, as print income overall remained resilient.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Axios Targets AI Deals with Axios Direct Product<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>American digital media business Axios is launching Axios Direct, <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/axios-preps-new-axios-direct-feeds-for-ai-models-agents-as-revenue-tops-2026-goal\/?utm_campaign=digidaydis&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_source=general-rss\">Digiday<\/a> reported this week, a new product which will deliver Axios\u2019 reporting via content feeds to paying customers. Speaking at the Digiday Publishing Summit, Axios chief revenue officer Jacquelyn Cameron outlined three feeds for Axios Direct. The first is akin to Bloomberg\u2019s terminal, according to Digiday, instantly delivering Axios updates to relevant customers. The second will be designed for AI models to easily ingest Axios\u2019s content, while the third will enable individual subscribers to receive Axios\u2019s reporting via their own AI agents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>News UK Sees Spike in Bot Traffic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>News publisher News UK has seen a spike in bot traffic recently, with non-human activity making up a fifth of total News UK traffic in the past six months, <a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/publishers\/digital-journalism\/fifth-of-news-uk-website-traffic-was-non-human-in-past-six-months\/\">Press Gazette<\/a> reported this week. Speaking at the Gazette\u2019s Future of Media Technology conference, News UK\u2019s chief technology officer Tom Jackson said the company has changed how it filters bot traffic. Previously, the company used a block list which specifically targeted AI scrapers, whereas now it\u2019s switched to an allow list which only lets through specified bots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digitalbox Targets Growth Through Creator Network<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Digital publishing group Digitalbox, which owns titles including The Daily Mash and The Tab, is leaning on video and creator content to drive growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/digitalbox-eyes-creator-led-growth-062400501.html\">Yahoo<\/a> reported this week. The company has launched the Digitalbox Creator Network, which spans several of its titles and pays more than 200 creators to produce roughly 500 original videos per month by October. Yahoo reports the company hopes its creator network will open up new opportunities for direct deals with advertisers.<\/p>\n<h2>The Week for Brands &amp; Agencies<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Publicis Media Tops COMvergence H1 New Business Rankings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>French holding company Publicis Groupe\u2019s media arm topped global research firm COMvergence\u2019s H1 new business ranking, with $3.24 billion of total new business value (which combines wins and retentions, with losses subtracted). Omnicom Media and WPP Media both also claimed wins from the results though. Marketers surveyed by the WFA and Mediasense ranked strategic judgement as the second most important future capability, behind AI fluency. Digital advertising already contributes \u00a3175 billion to the UK economy, according to the report, and this figure could be set to rise rapidly as AI fuels further growth. The report advises that a policy environment that supports innovation, investment, and skills will be necessary in order to realise this potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Efficiency Remains Primary Method for Judging AI Performance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new survey from IAB Europe suggests that pure operational efficiency remains the most common metric through which businesses across the industry are judging their AI investments. IAB Europe\u2019s 2026 Impact of AI on Digital Advertising Report found that, unsurprisingly, total adoption is high. Ninety-two percent of those surveyed said their businesses already use AI tools internally, while 86 percent reported using AI specifically in marketing processes.
