\n Decluttering and organizing are some of my favorite pastimes, and I really
\n enjoy making our problem areas work better for our family. Here are some of my
\n favorite organizing makeovers over the past nine years in our home!\n<\/p>\n

\n

\n This linen closet is in a little alcove off of our kitchen. It’s probably
\n meant for bedding, but we use it for \u00a0kitchen and utility items.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n This is how it looked after we moved in nine years ago — when I would
\n literally chuck random things as we unpacked each room:\n <\/p>\n

\n As I’m typing, I’m realizing this is the only closet makeover I’ll share
\n here that still has the wire shelving. I do have a plan to
\n sort of<\/i> replace those in the future, I’ll be sure to share that when
\n I do.\n <\/p>\n

\n I found some inexpensive plastic bins that fit the existing shelving
\n perfectly — I bought both shallow and deep bins for the various items we
\n wanted to keep in here.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n We keep a lot of our paper goods in here, as well as kitchen towels, first
\n aid supplies and medications. It’s SO handy to have this near the kitchen
\n for easy access!\n <\/p>\n

2. “Hers” Pax system closet\u00a0<\/h3>\n

\n We started with the easiest closet makeover, let’s move on to the biggest
\n project!\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Let’s just say…if you asked my husband and I who was the most organized —
\n we would both say me. \ud83d\ude42 Soooo, I like that we have two separate closets now
\n (we shared one in our first home).\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n I may be the most organized, but if I don’t have somewhere to put the stuff,
\n I’ll still make a mess. This is how the long wall of my closet used to look
\n on any given day:\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Those dang wire shelves!! Oh how I loathe them.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n What a difference!:\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n \"Pax<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n Everything has stayed beautifully organized for years now.\n <\/p>\n

\n

\n Funny how much it helps to have a dedicated spot for each item!\n <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n

\n The other side of the room was usually way worse. This corner became my
\n “toss and forget it” spot:\n <\/p>\n

\n \"Kallax<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n I keep hoodies and sweaters, as well as fall and holiday-themed clothing in
\n those bins. This system has worked wonderfully!\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Lately I’ve been working on a few tweaks in this closet, and I’ll be sharing
\n those soon.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

3. Messy linen closet<\/h3>\n

\n We have an upstairs linen closet that stores most of our blankets and
\n bedding. It was during this makeover that I realized I am truly a blanket
\n hoarder.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Our family only uses two beds in our home regularly, so what <\/i>in the
\n world:\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n \"messy<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n I made sure to drill the supports into studs so the new shelving could hold
\n the weight of the heavy blankets:\n <\/p>\n

\n \"white<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n This makeover was a ton of work — not so much the actual shelves, but the
\n nail filling, caulking and painting in such a tiny space. But it was SO
\n worth it!\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n

\n I built the shelves a bit deeper so they could easily hold the bulky
\n bedding without it hanging off.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n

Here’s how the closet looks when we open the door:\u00a0<\/p>\n

4. Mud room cleaning closet\u00a0<\/h3>\n

\n One of my best decisions when we built this house was to have a large closet
\n built in our mud\/laundry room.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Initially this was another great spot to throw stuff and shut the doors:\n <\/p>\n

\n \"messy<\/a>\n <\/div>\n
\n \"built<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n This works best in a long closet with double doors since there’s so much
\n space off to the sides.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n Earlier this summer I continued with more shelves on the other side of the
\n closet as well:\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n \"cleaning<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n Now this closet is (pretty much) exclusively for cleaning supplies and
\n vacuums. We still keep one litter box in here (I cut a cat door into one of
\n the doors so they can come and go) but otherwise it’s our go-to spot for
\n rags, the broom, etc.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

5. Teen IKEA closet makeover<\/h3>\n

\n Our son’s closet has been underutilized for most of the time we’ve lived
\n here. It wasn’t until a couple of months before he left for college that we
\n finally addressed it (perfect timing right?).\n <\/p>\n

\n Thankfully he didn’t need a TON of hanging space, but we needed a better
\n solution for folded clothing:\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n \"dark<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n All of the IKEA pull out doodads are so helpful! Now he has space for
\n hoodies, sweaters and accessories.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n As you can see, I had fun making the whole space look better. I installed
\n navy grasscloth wallpaper and he hung some of his favorite memorabilia on
\n the opposite wall:\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

6. Pantry before and after<\/h3>\n

\n I shared this room in our home tour post, but it deserves a spot here too! I
\n was thrilled with our melamine shelving when we moved in…mostly because it
\n wasn’t wire. \ud83d\ude42\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n \"messy<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n But you know me, I had big plans in mind. The pantry isn’t huge, but it’s
\n waaaay bigger than the one in our first house. I knew we had plenty of room
\n to make this space much more functional.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n \"cabinets<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n \"tall<\/a>\n <\/div>\n
\n \"DIY<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n I much prefer drawers to cabinets, if I could do it all over again I’d only
\n have drawers in our kitchen.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

7. Custom drawer organization<\/h3>\n
\n This makeover is my smallest and easiest organization DIY, and definitely
\n one of my favorites. I’ve added
\n these custom drawer organizers<\/a>
\n to all of our kitchen drawers and have plans to keep going throughout the
\n house!\n <\/div>\n

\n The best part about this project is the only tool you’ll need is something
\n to cut the wood (I use a compound miter saw). The wood is very inexpensive
\n and cuts easily — the process is like a puzzle and uses tension to create
\n each custom cubby:\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n \"DIY<\/a>\n <\/div>\n

\n If you cut the pieces just right, there’s no need for glue or anything else
\n to secure them. They are crazy secure and don’t move around at all when the
\n drawers open and close.\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

\n These DIY drawer organizers are a game CHANGER!:\n <\/p>\n

\n I’ve tackled most of the closets in our home — there are only a couple left
\n but they are the biggest of them all. Stay tuned for more on each of those!\n <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
