And that\u2019s made karate harder for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d smirk then, I imagine, and slowly and deliberately flex his . . . well, everything. (He could do that!) Then in cheerful camaraderie he\u2019d clap me on the shoulder and invite me into the nearby tavern for drinks where we\u2019d laugh and chat late into the night or until I got the feeling back in my shoulder. Then we\u2019d depart as friends, and one day I\u2019d write a book about him titled, \u201cBruce Lee: The Badass Who Broke My Shoulder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those unschooled in the martial arts disciplines often perceive the karate practitioner as a \u201cbadass\u201d \u2013 that is, a heavily muscled, excessively tattooed, Republican-supporting, belligerent shoulder smacker.<\/p>\n<p>As a seven-year karate student who began practicing at 64, I don\u2019t fit any of the criteria for badass-ery. I don\u2019t have huge muscles; I hire guys like that to move my stuff. My only tattoo is a small, grey mole on my neck that I <em>really<\/em> should have looked at. I don\u2019t vote Republican, and nowadays won\u2019t allow them near my family. And I\u2019m never belligerent. <em>You\u2019re<\/em> belligerent!<\/p>\n<p>Jerk!<\/p>\n<p>Yet because of my involvement in the martial arts, sometimes friends expect me to <em>act<\/em> as a badass. This does not come easily to humor writers and longtime AARP members. Even the heavily muscled ones.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the neighborhood barbecue: \u201cI left a dozen 110-pound bags of ice in my trunk. Dave, will you grab those?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>At the movie theater: \u201cBoy, those teens are really loud and belligerent! Dave?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>At Thanksgiving with shifty, drunk Uncle Max: \u201c\u2014An\u2019. . . an\u2019 the <em>(bleepin\u2019 bleep)<\/em> federal auditor sez. . . he says, \u2018Yer\u2019 jes\u2019 gonna have to pony up an\u2019 pay all them back taxes.\u2019 You go talk wit\u2019 him, Dave! Ya\u2019 know what I mean, right? \u2018<em>Talk\u2019<\/em> wit\u2019 him?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because of this peer pressure, at times I\u2019ve tried to emulate the flagrant badass characteristics of the villains from 1970s Kung Fu movies: they amble down the street like a constipated John Wayne; their mouths sync poorly; they giggle like that nasally kid who sat by the radiator in your junior high study hall: \u201cSnee-heh-Heh-HEH Sneee-hee-Ha-HAR-Hee-hah! Snee!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>None of these worked. I still came across like an aging humorist working on a funny \u201cbit.\u201d So, for a better education I turned to dogs.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to their wolf ancestry, dogs are genetically predisposed toward badass-ery \u2014 even that yappy little brown fluff-thing down the street whose owner <em>never<\/em> picks up his poop.<\/p>\n<p>As a survival characteristic, dogs naturally exhibit behaviors meant to intimidate enemies, pack members, and those rubbery orange balls with that little squeaker inside. Also, studies show that dogs can learn these traits from other dogs and even refine them, according to Science with a capital \u2018S\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2258\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2258\" style=\"width: 728px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sleepingbetweengiants.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Dog-and-Belt-FINAL-V-2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sleepingbetweengiants.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Dog-and-Belt-FINAL-V-2.jpg\" alt=\"Who\u2019s the tougher badass: the fighter with the black belt or the dog taking his black belt?\" width=\"728\" height=\"603\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sleepingbetweengiants.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Dog-and-Belt-FINAL-V-2.jpg 728w, https:\/\/sleepingbetweengiants.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Dog-and-Belt-FINAL-V-2-300x248.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2258\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Who\u2019s the tougher badass: the fighter with the black belt or the dog <em>taking<\/em> his black belt?<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To pick up some tips, I listened in to the dogs gathered at the off-leash park near my home.<\/p>\n<p><em>(German Shepherd interrupts dogs wrestling and chasing about park.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SHEPHERD: \u201cOkay, everyone! Take a last-minute pee and find your seat. . . or just SIT! . . . and we\u2019ll get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BEAGLE: \u201cAre there num-nums! I heard there\u2019d be num-nums.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SHEPHERD: \u201cWe\u2019ll take questions later. Thank you all for coming\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CORGI: \u201cI was here to poop anyway!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SHEPHERD: \u201c\u2014to today\u2019s seminar, \u2018Are You Lookin\u2019 at <em>Me?<\/em>: Accessing Your Inner Tough Guy\u2019. Our guest speaker is Minnie the Pit Bull from the Illinois State Police, Undercover Badass Division. Trooper Minnie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>(A smattering of yips. Some whines.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>TROOPER MINNIE THE PIT BULL: \u201cThank you! I\u2019m here to teach you how to act like a badass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SCHNAUZER: <em>(Whispering to Beagle)<\/em> \u201cHsst! Look! She only has half an ear!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BEAGLE: \u201cWow! <em>SO<\/em> badass!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TROOPER MINNIE: \u201cBeing a badass is a mental game. But since we\u2019re dogs, that\u2019s not our long suit. So, let\u2019s work on our stance. Ok, everybody! Shoulders up, head low. Lean into it! You with tails, straighten \u2018em. Point it down. Lose the cutesy curl! Now, stare off to the side, just a little. That makes you look kinda crazy. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>GOLDEN RETRIEVER: \u201cShould I even be doing this? Because, ya\u2019 know, I\u2019m a <em>good<\/em> dog! Some say a VERY good dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TERRIER MIX: \u201cSHUT up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BEAGLE: \u201cWe <em>really<\/em> should get num-nums for this!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>YORKSHIRE TERRIER: \u201cThis is bogus! I\u2019m a Yorkie! Can\u2019t get more badass than that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TROOPER MINNIE: \u201cGood start, everyone! Next, for those of you who are <em>not<\/em> hairless, make the fur on your spine stand straight up. Not too much! You want to look tough, but not rabid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AFGHAN HOUND: \u201cTsk! Look what this does to my hairstyle! And I just had a blowout!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TROOPER MINNIE: \u201cWell done, everyone! You\u2019re on your way to becoming fully accredited badasses. After you complete your training, you\u2019ll receive a special certificate that you can attach to your collar. Are there any questions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BEAGLE: \u201cNum-nums?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TERRIER MIX: \u201cSHUT up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DOBERMAN PINSCHER: \u201cTrooper Minnie, should I growl more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BICHON FRISE: <em>(Mocking)<\/em> \u201cDo you <em>need<\/em> to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TROOPER MINNIE: \u201cGreat question! My trainer teaches karate. He learned this from something called a \u2018Bruce Lee\u2019. Try it with me!\u00a0 Deep breath . . aaaand\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>(Dogs in unison)<\/em> \u201cSnee-heh-Heh-HEH Sneee-hee-Ha-HAR-Hee-hah!
