Occasionally, though, one of these normally quiet components starts monopolizing system resources. tccd is one such example: it may suddenly jump to the top of Activity Monitor, causing sluggish performance, overheating, faster battery drain, or noisy fans.

The good news is that tccd isn’t malware. Its name stands for Transparency, Consent, and Control daemon, and it belongs to the macOS privacy framework responsible for handling application access to the camera, microphone, contacts, screen recording, Accessibility features, and other protected resources.

Problems begin when an app or privacy-related system component gets stuck repeatedly requesting or verifying access. tccd may then remain unusually busy for extended periods. So, rather than treating the daemon itself as the culprit, it makes sense to find and fix whatever keeps triggering it.

<picture></picture>

What does the tccd process do?

For clarity’s sake, tccd is part of Apple’s Transparency, Consent, and Control, commonly abbreviated as TCC. This privacy framework keeps applications from freely accessing sensitive data or hardware without the user’s knowledge.

The easiest way to see TCC in action is to open System Settings > Privacy & Security. The different categories listed there reflect resources whose use macOS keeps under varying degrees of control.

These include, among others:

Camera

Microphone

Contacts

Calendars

Reminders

Photos

Accessibility

Screen and System Audio Recording

Full Disk Access

Files and folders

Location-related services

Automation permissions

Whenever applicable, macOS stores the user’s permission decision so that applications don’t have to ask the same question every time they launch. tccd sits in the middle of this communication and helps decide whether a process requesting protected access has the necessary authorization.

There can be more than one tccd-related process running because macOS separates some privacy operations by user and system context. This alone is not suspicious. Under normal circumstances, these instances spend most of their time using little or virtually no CPU.

What isn’t normal is seeing tccd continuously occupy a sizable portion of processing capacity when no obvious permission-related activity is taking place.

Why tccd may use too much CPU

Persistent tccd CPU usage usually means another application or macOS component keeps interacting with the privacy framework in a way that triggers repeated checks. The most common causes include the following:

Repeated permission requests. A buggy app may continuously ask for access to the microphone, camera, screen recording, Accessibility features, or another protected resource.

Inconsistent TCC permissions. An app update, macOS upgrade, migration, or restored backup may leave an existing privacy authorization in a state that causes repeated validation attempts.

Recently updated software. Changes to an app’s executables, helper processes, signing information, or permission handling can occasionally clash with existing TCC records.

Login items and background utilities. Software that starts automatically may trigger privacy checks immediately after login even when its main application window isn’t open.

Temporary macOS glitches. Privacy databases and related services may briefly become busier following a system update, although prolonged CPU usage warrants troubleshooting.

How to check what is triggering tccd

You don’t need an elaborate investigation before trying the fixes below. A quick check in Activity Monitor can often point you in the right direction.

Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.

Select the CPU tab and search for tccd.

If its usage remains elevated, quit applications that use the camera, microphone, screen recording, Accessibility, Contacts, or similar permissions one at a time.

Watch whether tccd’s CPU usage drops after a particular app is closed.

<picture></picture>

If it does, focus the following troubleshooting steps on that application first.

How to fix tccd high CPU usage on Mac

There is no point in jumping straight to drastic measures. What you can do is reduce the likelihood that inconsistent apps and stale permissions will send it into an endless loop.

A few habits go a long way:

Keep macOS current. Privacy framework bugs are often corrected through regular system updates.

Update third-party apps. This is particularly important for software that interacts with the microphone, camera, screen, Accessibility features, or other protected resources.

Remove applications you no longer use. Abandoned utilities and their background components have no business hanging around indefinitely.

Review Login Items periodically. Less software running automatically means fewer potential sources of background conflicts.

Be selective with privacy permissions. Don’t grant Accessibility, Full Disk Access, camera, microphone, or screen-recording rights simply because an app asks.

Avoid indiscriminate TCC resets. Reset the affected service or application first rather than clearing everything.

Use reliable software sources. Poorly maintained or dubious utilities are more likely to interact with macOS services in unpredictable ways.

It’s worth noting that occasional tccd activity is completely expected. The goal isn’t to keep the process at zero CPU every second. What you want to avoid is sustained resource consumption that clearly affects the Mac’s performance.

Takeaways

tccd is a legitimate macOS privacy process, and high CPU usage usually means another application or permission record keeps triggering it. In most cases, restarting the Mac, checking the suspected app, updating it, and resetting the relevant TCC permission will put things back in order.

The key is to fix the trigger rather than tccd itself. The daemon is normally just the messenger.

FAQ

Is tccd safe?

Is tccd safe?

Yes. tccd is a legitimate macOS process associated with Apple’s Transparency, Consent, and Control privacy framework. It helps determine whether applications can access protected resources such as your microphone, camera, contacts, screen-recording functionality, and other sensitive areas of the system.

Its presence in Activity Monitor is normal. Sustained high CPU usage means it is worth investigating what keeps triggering the daemon, not that tccd itself is malicious.

Can I force quit tccd on Mac?

Can I force quit tccd on Mac?

You can terminate the process, but doing so rarely constitutes a permanent fix. macOS is designed to relaunch essential background services as needed, so tccd will normally return.

If force-quitting it temporarily brings CPU usage down only for the problem to reappear, look for the application or permission request responsible for triggering the daemon instead.

Why is tccd using more than 100% CPU?

Why is tccd using more than 100% CPU?

Activity Monitor can report CPU utilization above 100% on Macs with multiple processor cores. Roughly speaking, 100% represents full utilization of one logical core, so a multithreaded workload may exceed that value.

A reading above 100% therefore doesn’t mean the Activity Monitor is malfunctioning. What matters more is whether tccd maintains unusually high usage for a prolonged period and whether this coincides with overheating, battery drain, noisy fans, or sluggish performance.

Will resetting tccd permissions delete my files?

Will resetting tccd permissions delete my files?

No. Using tccutil to reset a privacy permission removes the stored allow-or-deny decision associated with that TCC service.
