Sports Banger and King Alpha Sound System are set to host a night of music in east London marking 90 years since the Battle of Cable Street.

Taking place at Shoreditch’s Kachette on October 3, the event will bring together DJs, live music and a photography exhibition curated by the two crews, with all ticket proceeds going towards striking workers supported by Unite the Union.

Artists playing include Tasha, Jeanie and The White Boys and Nerm.

The night comes ahead of the 90th anniversary of one of the best known anti-fascist mobilisations in British history. On October 4, 1936, around 5,000 supporters of Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists attempted to march through east London, an area with a large Jewish population.

Thousands of local residents, trade unionists and anti-fascist activists gathered to stop them. After clashes between protesters and police, the fascist march was eventually abandoned, with the BUF unable to pass through Cable Street.

The confrontation became known as the Battle of Cable Street, and its legacy has remained closely tied to the history of east London’s Jewish, migrant and working class communities.

For Jonny Banger, founder of Sports Banger, bringing the anniversary into a club setting is a natural fit: “Fascists hate dancing,” he said. “That’s why we are honoured to be at Cable Street 90 – united in the spirit of rave and resistance.”

King Alpha Sound System, headed up by Ras Peter and Ras Joseph, will join Sports Banger for the event. The former is known for its roots in reggae and sound system culture, while Sports Banger has spent the past decade combining rave culture, bootleg fashion and politics, including its long-running parties and Glastonbury’s Shangri-La Opening Ceremony.

The event is being organised with Unite the Union, which is also backing a march and rally on the anniversary itself. All proceeds will be donated to striking workers.

“It’s about remembering the working class people – Jewish families, dockers and trade unionists – who stood shoulder to shoulder,” said Unite senior organiser Joe Rollin. “It will celebrate the solidarity that defeated fascism in 1936 and bring people together to keep that spirit alive.”

Cable Street 90 takes place at Kachette, 347 Old Street, London, on October 3 from 8pm to 1am.
