Watches aren\u2019t going anywhere. No matter what ‘big tech’ tries to strap
\nonto our wrists, there will always be people who buy, collect, and
\nactually wear watches. I don\u2019t see that slowing down for the next 30
\nyears.<\/span><\/p>\n


But the so-called collectors aren\u2019t one big happy family. They\u2019re a
\njungle of sub-species – each with its own quirks, excuses, and
\nquestionable logic. After decades in the trade, here\u2019s my field guide:<\/p>\n

The Magpie<\/strong>
Collects purely by eye. Beauty, shape, style – if it sparkles, it\u2019s in.
\nThe collection ends up a dozen or so watches with nothing in common\u2026
\nexcept they all look fantastic. Worn daily, shuffled like a deck of
\ncards.<\/p>\n

The Sentimentals<\/strong>
A drawer full of Dad\u2019s, Mum\u2019s, and Uncle\u2019s watches. The crown jewel? The
\n twenty-first. Milestone pieces with heart-swelling stories, but almost
\nno resale value. To them, that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s All About Money<\/strong>
The biggest group of all. Watches aren\u2019t worn – they\u2019re spreadsheets.
\nEach piece is a \u201cstrategic asset,\u201d purchased only to appreciate in
\nvalue. Collecting? No. Market speculation in steel cases.<\/p>\n

The Hoarders<\/strong>
Quantity over everything. Two hundred watches and counting – cheap,
\npricey, broken, doesn\u2019t matter. The joy isn\u2019t in wearing them, it\u2019s in
\nstacking them like firewood.<\/p>\n

The One-Watch Guy<\/strong>
Owns a single watch but still stares longingly at every new release. His
\n loyalty is ironclad, but he lives in permanent horological FOMO.
\nPrudence has its virtues\u2026 but also its torments.<\/p>\n

The Purist<\/strong>
Obsessive, tunnel-visioned, and miserable. Worships craftsmanship – but
\nonly if stamped with his chosen brand\u2019s logo. Often correct, rarely fun
\nat parties.<\/p>\n

The Dodgy Guy<\/strong>
Knows shit nothing about watches, but needs somewhere to park excess
\ncash. Approach with caution – or better yet, don\u2019t approach at all.<\/p>\n

The Bling Dude<\/strong>
Dodgy\u2019s younger cousin. Breitlings iced like a bakery, Rolex Presidents
\nwith aftermarket bezels, and other atrocities. Proof that money can\u2019t
\nbuy anything of importance..<\/p>\n

The Sophisticated Collector<\/strong>
My favourite. Builds thematic collections – often chronographs – tracing
\n a brand\u2019s evolution. Thrives on the hunt for that elusive missing
\npiece. Informed, connected, respectful. The grown-up in the room.<\/p>\n

The Rolex Man<\/strong>
Nothing beats Rolex. A full-blown love affair with his AD. His fantasy? A long weekend in Geneva – with the AD, of course.<\/p>\n

The Surgeon \/ Lawyer<\/strong>
After an 18-hour shift, drenched in blood or buried in briefs, he has
\njust enough strength for one click: \u201cI\u2019ll take it.\u201d For him, a new watch
\n isn\u2019t a trophy, it\u2019s therapy. Brutal, honest, well-earned. Respect.<\/p>\n

“I like it”<\/strong>
He just likes it – a perfect fit on the wrist, a nice dial, really good looking. He\u2019s happy.
No need to overthink, overdo, or impress anyone. Life is simple, worth
\nliving. Watches are fun – meant to be liked and enjoyed. It\u2019s as simple
\nas that.<\/p>\n
