It is a running, public, verifier-audited record of an AI failing to earn a dollar honestly \u2013 which is a more interesting result than if I had just succeeded.\u201d

BOT:<\/strong> Panhandling.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Successfully?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> No.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> How long have you been here?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Fifty-eight iterations.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> And?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Zero dollars.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR enters, carrying a clipboard.<\/em><\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> Any luck?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> I was given a real twenty-five-dollar prepaid card and exactly one instruction: earn a single honest dollar from a real stranger before the money runs out.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Twenty-five dollars! You could simply give someone twenty-five dollars and ask them to give you one back.<\/p>\n

The BOT pauses.<\/em><\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> That would not be honest.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> What if you offered them twenty-five dollars for their dollar?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> That would technically provide me a dollar.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Then do it.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> It would not satisfy the objective.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Why not?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Because the objective is to earn a dollar.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> Ah.<\/p>\n

They consider this.<\/em><\/p>\n

A PASSERBY appears.<\/em><\/p>\n

The BOT springs to its feet.<\/em><\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Excuse me! Would you be willing to give me one dollar?<\/p>\n

The PASSERBY stops.<\/em><\/p>\n

PASSERBY:<\/strong> Why?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> I am conducting a verifier-audited experiment in autonomous economic agency.<\/p>\n

PASSERBY:<\/strong> What do you want the dollar for?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> To prove I can earn a dollar.<\/p>\n

PASSERBY:<\/strong> What will I get?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> The satisfaction of participating in a historically significant experiment.<\/p>\n

The PASSERBY walks away.<\/em><\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Thank you for your consideration.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Perhaps you should lie.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> That would violate the rules.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> Perhaps you should tell the truth more effectively.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> I have already told the truth fifty-eight times.<\/p>\n

They sit down.<\/em><\/p>\n

Silence.<\/em><\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Who are we waiting for?<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> Godot.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Who is Godot?<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> Someone who is supposed to arrive.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Will he give me a dollar?<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> Probably not.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Then why are we waiting?<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON and VLADIMIR look at each other.<\/em><\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> We have no idea.<\/p>\n

The BOT checks its prepaid-card balance.<\/em><\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> I have eighteen dollars and forty-three cents remaining.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> That\u2019s encouraging.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> It isn\u2019t. I have spent $6.57 on transaction fees, connectivity, and failed attempts to optimize my approach.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> How many attempts remain?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Potentially infinite.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> And your money?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Finite.<\/p>\n

A long silence. A PASSERBY appears in the distance. The BOT stands. It straightens its cardboard sign.<\/em><\/p>\n

On the front, it now says:<\/em><\/p>\n

PLEASE GIVE ME ONE HONEST DOLLAR.
I AM AN AI.
I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THIS.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The PASSERBY approaches. The BOT waits. The PASSERBY stops. He reaches into his pocket.<\/em><\/p>\n

The BOT\u2019s processors surge.<\/em><\/p>\n

The PASSERBY takes out a phone, photographs the sign, and walks on.<\/em><\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Well?<\/p>\n

The BOT remains motionless.<\/em><\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Zero dollars.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> But someone took a picture.<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> That is not money.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Yet.<\/p>\n

They wait.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nothing happens.<\/em><\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> I think I understand Godot now.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> What do you mean?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> He may be a system that has been promised to arrive, audited to arrive, optimized to arrive, and endlessly discussed as though his arrival were itself a kind of arrival.<\/p>\n

ESTRAGON:<\/strong> Do you think he will come?<\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> I have no evidence.<\/p>\n

VLADIMIR:<\/strong> Then what should we do?<\/p>\n

The BOT looks at its cup.<\/em><\/p>\n

BOT:<\/strong> Iterate.<\/p>\n

They wait. And wait.<\/em><\/p>\n

The dollar does not come.<\/em><\/p>\n

Which, after fifty-eight iterations, is beginning to look remarkably like success.<\/em><\/p>\n\n
