Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 28, 2026, closing out one of the messier porting sagas in recent memory. Bandai Namco confirmed the date back in June, and it\u2019s arriving at $79.99 \u2014 on the pricier end for Switch 2 software, but it\u2019s bundling in a lot more than a straight port.<\/p>\n
If you don\u2019t remember why this release took so long, here\u2019s the short version: at Gamescom 2025, journalists got hands-on with an early build and it was rough. Nintendo Life described parts of the demo running at 15 frames per second \u2014 basically unplayable for a game built around tight, reactive combat. Bandai Namco wouldn\u2019t even let anyone record footage, which told you everything about how unfinished it was. A month later, FromSoftware pushed the release into 2026 citing \u201cgame performance adjustments.\u201d<\/p>\n
The actual problem wasn\u2019t the Switch 2\u2019s GPU \u2014 Cyberpunk 2077 already proved the hardware\u2019s Ampere graphics chip could handle demanding games. The bottleneck was the CPU. Switch 2 runs a custom Nvidia chip with an 8-core ARM processor, and only six of those cores are available to developers. Elden Ring\u2019s engine had only ever run on x86 processors before, so this wasn\u2019t a simple recompile \u2014 it was a full instruction-set conversion, a first for FromSoftware\u2019s engine, running on a chip clocked lower than the processor inside a Steam Deck.<\/p>\n
By March 2026, at GDC, the improvement was real. FromSoftware let press record footage for the first time, and outlets reported frame rates in the 30-40fps range in handheld mode, with docked mode targeting a steadier 30fps. FromSoftware still hasn\u2019t published official final performance targets for the retail release, so it\u2019s worth tempering expectations \u2014 this isn\u2019t confirmed 60fps, but it\u2019s a long way from that Gamescom demo.<\/p>\n
As for what you\u2019re actually getting: Tarnished Edition bundles the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, plus content that isn\u2019t available anywhere else at launch \u2014 two new starting classes (Knight\/Knightess of Ides and a Heavy Warrior), four new armor sets, new weapons and Ashes of War, three Torrent cosmetic options, and a crossover armor set pulled from Dark Souls II\u2019s Lucatiel of Mirrah. Physical copies ship as a Game Key-Card, meaning the cartridge itself holds no game data \u2014 you insert it and pull roughly 75GB from the eShop, but the card can be resold or moved between systems since it\u2019s just a license key in cartridge form.<\/p>\n
Worth knowing if you\u2019re not on Switch 2: the new classes, armor, weapons, and Torrent cosmetics are also launching the same day as a standalone \u201cTarnished Pack\u201d on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC \u2014 priced at roughly $4. So if you already own Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree elsewhere, you don\u2019t need to buy the whole package again just for the new content.<\/p>\n
One more thing if you\u2019ve been sitting on a Switch 2 purchase: Nintendo\u2019s raising the console\u2019s price to $499.99 starting September 1.
