The following day, 6,000 people from the upper-middle class were invited to a dinner and dance, while for the rest of the city\u2019s population \u2013 some 40,000 people \u2013 food and drink was provided at four different locations with vast quantities of bread, cheese and sausages given out for free, alongside more than 23,000 <\/span><span>litres<\/span><span> of beer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>While the wedding was of local interest, and the free beer and sausages were nice, the majority of <\/span><span>Mu\u0308nchners<\/span><span> were most excited about a horse race which took place on 17 October. <\/span><span>Almost the<\/span> <span>whole population<\/span><span>, including the royal family and the newlyweds, turned out to watch 30 horses compete on a great meadow <\/span><span>to<\/span><span> the <\/span><span>south<\/span><span> of the city. The grounds of the race were renamed <\/span><span>Theresienwiese<\/span><span> (Therese\u2019s Meadow), after Crown Princess Therese.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>The wedding party was so good they celebrated the first anniversary with an \u201cOktober-<\/span><span>Festen<\/span><span>\u201d which combined the horse race with <\/span><span>an agricultural fair offering <\/span><span>priz<\/span><span>es for farmers, with the unspoken aim<\/span><span> of improving the quality of produce <\/span><span>at a time when local diets were heavily reliant on potatoes and offered relatively little nutritional variety.<\/span><span> Other events included <\/span><span>a shooting competition, a bowling alley and wheelbarrow races, while local innkeepers put up booths around the horse track to sell beer to those attending.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>By 1820, there were <\/span><span>numerous<\/span><span> beer suppliers to the festival, and drinking started to become a bigger part of the festivities, so <\/span><span>special areas<\/span><span> were built just for drinking. But it <\/span><span>wasn\u2019t<\/span><span> a drinking <\/span><span>event<\/span><span> and it was arranged for the whole family with amusements and activities for all ages.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Munich quadrupled in size between 1810 and 1870. In 1871 Germany unified as a nation, and then in 1872 the festival was moved forward to start in September<\/span><span> to accommodate longer days and better weather<\/span><span>, and ever since then it<\/span><span> has<\/span><span> finished on the first Sunday in October. The beer sold in 1872 was also significant, but accidentally so.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Ma\u0308rzen<\/span> <span>was a beer<\/span><span> brewed in March and left to mature in cool underground cellars to be served in late summer. By the early 1870s, beer was changing in Munich. Inspired by the popularity of Pilsner and Vienna lagers, Munich\u2019s brewers started making <\/span><span>amber<\/span><span>&#8211;<\/span><span>coloured<\/span><span> lagers at a time when <\/span><span>almost all<\/span><span> beer was dark brown<\/span><span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>It had been <\/span><span>a hot summer<\/span><span> in <\/span><span>1872<\/span><span> and people at Oktoberfest were thirstier than usual, meaning that supplies of regular lager were low. One tavern owner was offered this new kind of paler <\/span><span>Ma\u0308rzen<\/span><span> by one of the local brewers and despite it being much more expensive than all the other beers, it was a big hit. It was brewed again the following year, <\/span><span>essentially as<\/span><span> a festival beer just for Oktoberfest. Then other brewers started to do the <\/span><span>same<\/span><span> and Oktoberfest developed its own unique type of beer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>As Oktoberfest progressed through the late nineteenth century, the central part of the event became a ring of around 20 beer stalls. This limited number of temporary taverns created demand, with breweries wanting to own their own to <\/span><span>maximise<\/span><span> the sales of their special <\/span><span>Oktoberfestbier<\/span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Each tavern was newly constructed every year by carpenters. Then came the first \u2018<\/span><span>Bierburg<\/span><span>,\u2019 or Beer Castle, built in 1895 as a wooden hall large enough for 800 people. By the early 1900s, every local brewery had a huge castle for Oktoberfest \u2013\u202fsome big enough to hold 12,000 drinkers, entertained by entire orchestras.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>The death and rebirth of Oktoberfest<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>The World Wars stopped Oktoberfest,<\/span><span> as men were sent off to fight and public safety was seen as more <\/span><span>important<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span>B<\/span><span>ut it became a local symbol of rebirth as it returned <\/span><span>as a smaller Autumn festival in the late <\/span><span>19<\/span><span>40s<\/span><span> before growing again<\/span><span> into the 1950s.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>By the 1960s, the earlier horse race was <\/span><span>gone<\/span><span> and the agricultural fair <\/span><span>wasn\u2019t<\/span><span> much of a draw, so that left the big beer tents. A combination of post-war economic revival, international tourism, <\/span><span>television<\/span><span> and word of mouth helped the festival grow more famous, while a new stereotype of Oktoberfest with\u202flederhosen, litres of lager and a happy, welcoming atmosphere shifted Germany\u2019s global identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Then other cities around the world decided to start hosting their own local <\/span><span>Oktoberfests<\/span><span> in the style of the original, replicating the most obvious part of the festival \u2013 the lager and lederhosen \u2013 and Oktoberfest became world renowned and synonymous with <\/span><span>celebrating beer.<\/span> <span>It&#8217;s<\/span><span> also<\/span><span> thought that a large part of growth outside of Germany was a result of <\/span><span>German <\/span><span>immigran<\/span><span>ts taking their cultural traditions, brewing heritage and festive celebrations to new regions, especially in North America.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Oktoberfest today<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Today, the beer castles, <\/span><span>generally referred<\/span><span> to as tents, are still massive.<\/span><span> There are 14 big tents and 21 smaller <\/span><span>tents<\/span><span> and they are all along a <\/span><span>one<\/span><span>&#8211;<\/span><span>kilometre<\/span><span> stretch of road through <\/span><span>Theresienwiese<\/span><span>, known locally as <\/span><span>Wiesn<\/span><span>. The biggest \u201ctent\u201d is 85m long and <\/span><span>has a capacity of 10,000 people<\/span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>All tents have live music, some from orchestras, some from bands. There\u2019s classic Bavarian food with lots of pork, sausages, <\/span><span>potatoes<\/span><span> and bread, though the famous food of Oktoberfest is \u201c<\/span><span>hendl<\/span><span>\u201d,<\/span><span> half a spit-roasted chicken.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Munich has its \u2018big six\u2019 breweries: <\/span><span>Augustiner<\/span><span>, Hacker-<\/span><span>Pschorr<\/span><span>, Hofbrau, Lowenbrau, Paulaner and Spaten. <\/span><span>These are the only breweries whose beer is served at the official Oktoberfest. Each has a presence in at least one of the large tents and produces an annual <\/span><span>Oktoberfestbier<\/span><span> for the event.<\/span> <span>Beer is traditionally served by the <\/span><span>litre<\/span><span> in a <\/span><span>Ma\u00df<\/span><span> (not a \u2018stein<\/span><span>\u2019,<\/span><span> which is a stone mug), and around seven million <\/span><span>litres<\/span><span> of beer are drunk during the official Oktoberfest celebration.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>But beer is only part of Oktoberfest. The <\/span><span>Wiesn<\/span> <span>remains<\/span><span> a festival for the whole family, with a huge funfair featuring rides, <\/span><span>games<\/span><span> and a giant Ferris wheel.<\/span> <\/span> <span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Across the world, other countries also celebrate with live music, classic Bavarian <\/span><span>food<\/span><span> and plenty of beer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>What are Oktoberfest beers like?\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>As mentioned earlier, there are some beer styles that have become known because of their presence in Oktoberfest celebrations.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>The <\/span><span>M\u00e4rzen<\/span><span>-style <\/span><span>Festbier<\/span><span> first drunk in the 1870s persisted until the 1950s. It was an amber-coloured lager, with toasted malt flavours, some residual sweetness and low hop character.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>From the 1950s onwards, as pale Helles lager grew in popularity and consumer tastes shifted towards lighter beers, Oktoberfest lagers gradually became paler, <\/span><span>drier<\/span><span> and crisper.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span>Today the \u2018Big Six\u2019 Munich breweries all produce an \u2018<\/span><span>Oktoberfestbier<\/span><span>\u2019 <\/span><span>that\u2019s<\/span> <span>relatively uniform<\/span><span>. <\/span><span>It\u2019s<\/span><span> 5.7-6.3% ABV, a brilliant golden colour, malt-forward in flavour (think breadcrusts and a clean, pure flavour of malted barley) with low bitterness and overall balance.
