It is heartfelt and factual. Whether you are a dog parent or someone from the outside, please take a few minutes to read it. I have no doubt it will touch you deeply, and give you a clearer idea of what those two words mean to those who have to come to an extremely difficult decision.

A Dog Parent’s Perspective

Behavioral Euthanasia is Rescue

Before I was an Officer explaining dangerous behavior, bite risk, management failure and behavioral euthanasia to other people, I was just a woman standing in my own house realizing that the dog I fucking adored was not safe.

Her name was Dakota.

And Dakota was a good dog.

Actually, let me fix that:

Dakota was a great dog. For us.

That last part matters more than people want to admit. She loved her family. She was affectionate.

She was loyal. She belonged with us.

She had people she trusted and routines that made sense to her.

If you only saw Dakota inside our home, you’d probably wonder what all the fuss was about.

And then there was the rest of the world.

Dakota lived with fear, trauma, poor genetics, reactivity and a level of misplaced protection that made her dangerous outside of the tiny circle of people she trusted.

We managed it.

And managed it.

And managed it.

For nine years, we managed it.

Until one day, while I wasn’t home, Dakota heard a neighborhood child outside.

She broke out of her crate.

And then she broke through a fucking window trying to get to that child.

Not an open door. Not a gate somebody forgot to latch. Not “the kid ran up and hugged her.”

A WINDOW.

My dog looked at a physical barrier separating her from a child and essentially said,

“Bet.”

Thankfully, the child was not seriously injured.

That sentence could have ended very differently.

And THAT was the moment.

Because I had two options:

Accept what Dakota had just shown me. Or wait until she provided additional evidence.

I chose not to wait. And apparently this is where Facebook would like to schedule its emergency board meeting.

“YOU COULD HAVE RE-HOMED HER.”

WHERE?

I am once again asking the citizens of Facebook to provide GPS coordinates for the mystical farm where aggressive dogs go to frolic peacefully for eternity.

Just 300 acres, one emotionally enlightened hermit and unlimited tennis balls.

Sometimes you’re just forwarding the problem to a new address and hoping you’re not around when the consequences arrive.

“BUT MY COUSIN’S FRIEND’S HAIRDRESSER HAD A REACTIVE DOG AND—”

Wonderful.

I am genuinely happy for your cousin’s friend’s hairdresser.

Dogs are individuals.

Risk is individual.

Behavior is individual.

And the existence of one successful rehabilitation does not mean every dog can safely be rehabilitated.

“WHAT ABOUT A DOG TRAINER?”

I am not anti training.

I am anti pretending training can rewrite every dog’s brain.

Sometimes we can improve behavior.

Sometimes we can reduce risk.

Sometimes medication gives a dog enough breathing room to learn.

And sometimes we’re trying to negotiate with a brain that genuinely believes a child existing outside the house is an emergency requiring immediate defenestration.

That’s not a quirky little training challenge.

That’s a safety problem.

And here’s the sentence nobody wants embroidered on a throw pillow: MANAGEMENT. FAILS.

It does. Even excellent management.

And when the only thing preventing catastrophic injury is maintaining perfect management for the next ten years, we need to have an adult conversation about whether that is actually a reasonable safety plan.

Not a Facebook conversation. An adult conversation. Because here’s what the comment section doesn’t have to do:

They don’t have to live with the dog.

They don’t have to manage every doorway.

They don’t have to check the fence before every potty break.

They don’t have to muzzle train.

They don’t have to rearrange their house.

They don’t have to tell their children which doors they can open.

They don’t have to explain to the neighbor why their child got bitten.

They don’t have to sit in an emergency room.

They don’t have to call Animal Services.

They don’t have to watch their dog leave in the back of an Animal Services vehicle after the incident everyone insisted would never happen.

The owner does.

And now, years later, I’m sometimes the Officer standing on the other side of that conversation.

I’ve sat with people absolutely fucking shattered because the dog they love has become a safety issue.

And they’ll look at me and say:

“But she’s such a good dog at home.”

I know.

“He’s never done anything like this to us.”

I believe you.

“My kids sleep with her.”

I believe that too.

“He’s my best friend.”

I know.

Because before I was the Officer having that conversation, I was them.

I had the dog who loved to nap with my kids, follow me into the shower and go for car rides.

And I also had to acknowledge the version capable of going through a FUCKING WINDOW after a child.

Neither version canceled the other out.

She was good. She was loved. She was dangerous.

All three sentences were true.

And Dakota became one of the most important teachers I’ve ever had in this job.

She taught me that sometimes loving an animal means advocating for their life and sometimes loving them means having enough courage to acknowledge when continuing that life creates an unacceptable risk to everyone around them.

She taught me that there are things worse than death. Living every day terrified and hypervigilant is not a beautiful life simply because the heart is still beating.

Living behind increasingly complicated layers of containment isn’t automatically a victory.

Being shuffled through rescue after rescue because nobody wants to be “the bad guy” isn’t kindness. And allowing a dog to escalate until somebody is catastrophically injured just so we can finally feel justified in euthanizing them is fucking insanity.

We do not need a body count before we’re allowed to believe what a dog has already shown us.

Dakota did not leave us in a flurry of trauma and paperwork and tears. She didn’t become a viral Facebook post with hundreds of people arguing about whether she deserved to die. She left with dignity. She left with the person she trusted the most holding her. She left loved. She left while I could still hold her and remember her as my best friend.

And, honestly, she required more sedation because she laid fully alert, fighting it, between me and the door like she thought it was me the next needle was intended for. Because that’s what Dakota did. She protected us.

Did it destroy me?

Yep.

Did I question myself?

Absolutely.

Did I wonder if there was some magical Option #47 I hadn’t found?

Of fucking course.

Would I make the same decision again? Yes.

Because behavioral euthanasia isn’t always what happens when somebody stops loving their dog.

Sometimes it’s what happens when someone finally loves their dog enough to stop asking them to be something their brain simply cannot be.

And THAT is why when I’m standing in uniform talking to someone facing this decision, I’m not judging them from some imaginary moral high ground.

I’m standing there with Dakota tucked quietly into the back of my mind. I know this road. I’ve walked it without the badge.

So when an owner tells me, “I swear she’s a good dog.” My answer will always be: I believe you.

Sometimes good dogs have broken brains. Sometimes good dogs are unsafe. Sometimes responsible ownership means training harder. Sometimes it means managing better. Sometimes it means asking for help. And sometimes responsible ownership means making the decision that absolutely fucking destroys you so the dog you love never gets the opportunity to destroy someone else’s life.

Behavioral euthanasia isn’t the right answer for every behavioral problem.

But sometimes?

Behavior euthanasia is the kind answer. It is the responsible answer. It is the safe answer. And it is still love.

Dakota taught me that long before this job ever did.

And every time I help another family understand that loving their dog and letting their dog go can exist in the same sentence, if I look really close out of the corner of my eye, it’s almost like she’s sitting beside me again.

By Chelsea Jay

Hands down.
