Ahead of the Lib Dem conference in Brighton, may I wish all my friends and fellow party members a productive and enjoyable conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I love conference and used to attend annually, but things have changed since my children started school. It can be challenging to be both a parent and a political activist, and spending four days in Brighton isn’t realistic.<\/p>\n

Anyway, I am returning to my weekly political updates, which I started earlier in the year. I aim to ensure this becomes a regular feature and will certainly appear on most weekends going forward.<\/p>\n

As before, I will take a brief look at some of the week’s events giving either “cheers” or “jeers” to various people in the news.<\/p>\n

Cheers<\/b> to Canada, which looks set to become the EU\u2019s first associate member<\/a>. It is not
\nprecisely clear what associate membership is, but Canada would surely gain a
\nstronger platform for promoting human rights, climate action and international
\nlaw alongside like-minded democracies. <\/p>\n

Cheers<\/b> to Sweden\u2019s centre-left opposition bloc, which
\nsecured a narrow victory in this week\u2019s general election<\/a>. Unpicking the
\nsignificance of the results from a Liberal perspective is difficult as the
\npolitical landscape is complex, but the most significant outcome is the setback
\nsuffered by the far-right, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD). Under the
\nprevious centre-right government, the SD held immense leverage and Prime
\nMinister Kristersson had even promised them formal cabinet positions if his
\nbloc won reelection. This is the first time since entering parliament in 2010
\nthat SD has lost round and is now the third \u2013 rather than second \u2013 largest
\nparty in the Riksdag.<\/p>\n

Cheers<\/b> to Lib Dem MP Ros Savage who, while fairly pointing
\nout that her party is \u201cstruggling for
\nrelevance\u201d and failing to paint a \u201ccoherent picture of the country we are
\ntrying to create\u201d, has written Liberalism Alive <\/a>\u2013 a report in which she advocates
\na bolder liberalism. It contains some very positive ideas and the kind of
\nauthentically radical thinking the Lib Dems need. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jeers <\/b>to Piddington Parish Council, which invoked the Battle
\nof Britain in a remarkable display of nimbyism. Its \u201creferendum\u201d to leave the
\nUK is, ultimately, a bizarre piece of political grandstanding but the
\ncomparison with the people who courageously defied the Luftwaffe was
\ndisrespectful and trivialises the sacrifices made. It was especially inappropriate
\non Battle of Britain Day when honest remembrance matters.<\/p>\n

Jeers <\/b>to Joe Martin, Reform MS for Caerdidd Penarth, who
\nclaimed that \u201cthe British Empire was a force for good\u201d, \u201cthe most morally
\nsophisticated the world had ever known\u201d and that \u201cthe decolonisation of Welsh
\nhistory represents an attack on Welsh identity\u201d. Such claims suggested that his
\ncalls for more truthful remembrance of history may not be quite so, well, truthful.<\/p>\n

Jeers<\/b> to the ill-informed protesters that have forced the RNLI to temporarily close its lifeboat station<\/a> in Portsmouth, compromising its
\nlife-saving work.\u00a0 <\/span>Jeers also to Nigel
\nFarage, whose claim that the RNLI are facilitating the invasion of the UK led
\nto this situation. Words have consequences.\u00a0<\/p>\n


\nJeers <\/b>to Benjamin Netanyahu, who has confirmed that he is seeking new laws to
\nallow Israel to remove citizenship from Israelis who criticize the nation\u2019s military<\/a>. Following the success of the documentary film NAZA at the Venice Film Festival
\nlast weekend, the Oscar-winning directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor have
\nfound themselves accused of \u201ctreason against the state\u201d by various government
\nministers , while over 1,500 Jewish filmmakers have signed a petition defending
\n\u201cfreedom of expression and creation\u201d and expressing solidarity with Szor and
\nAbraham. Whatever one\u2019s views of the film, threatening to make its directors
\nstateless is no way for \u201cthe only democracy in the Middle East\u201d to behave. (It\u2019s
\nalso counterproductive and merely boosts international interest in NAZA.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jeers <\/b>to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, which
\nhas decided not to commit to funding the UK Youth parliament beyond March next
\nyear, meaning that the Youth Parliament will almost certainly cease to exist<\/a>.
\nTalk about how access to the scheme can be improved is welcome, but axing
\nfunding while those conversations are ongoing seems short-sighted and
\ncounter-productive.\u00a0<\/p>\n


\nJeers<\/b> to Thomas Kerr MSP who, likely for the same cynical reasons that caused
\nhim to claim the city is \u201clawless\u201d, decided to brand Glasgow\u2019s Govanhill area a \u201cghetto\u201d<\/a>, only two years after celebrating its diversity when a Conservative
\ncouncillor. This says more about Kerr\u2019s political repositioning and his
\nattention-grabbing behaviour than it does Govanhill.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tears<\/b> for Bonnie Greer, writer and columnist, who died earlier this week at the age of 77<\/a>.\u00a0Chicago-born but long resident in Britain, Greer was a playwright, novelist, critic and broadcaster whose wit, intellectual curiosity and moral courage enriched our cultural and political life. Many will remember the calm dignity with which she confronted the BNP\u2019s Nick Griffin on Question Time<\/a>; it was characteristic of a woman who spoke fearlessly for equality and pluralism without ever surrendering her warmth or humanity. British public life will be poorer without her.<\/p>\n
