There are new schedules to figure out, lunches to pack, earlier mornings, activities to coordinate, and the inevitable adjustment period as everyone settles into a new routine.

For many families, it can also be a time when healthy intentions resurface including plans to get more sleep, eat healthier, re-establish exercise routines, and prepare for cold and flu season. Trying to change everything at once can be overwhelming and usually isn’t sustainable.

Healthy family habits don’t need to be complicated, and they certainly don’t need to be perfect. Often, the most meaningful changes start with a few simple routines that support the foundations of health: sleep, nutrition, movement, stress management, and connection.

Start With the Basics: Sleep

When schedules get busy, sleep is often one of the first things to suffer. Homework takes longer than expected. Activities run late. Parents are trying to catch up after the kids go to bed. Screens make it easy to stay up later than intended. But sleep is one of the most important foundations of health for both children and adults.

Sleep is one of the most important foundations of health for both children and adults. The amount of sleep children and teens need varies by age. School-age children generally need 9 to 12 hours of sleep, while teenagers typically need 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours.

A good place to start is with consistency. You don’t need to create an elaborate nighttime routine, but having a predictable rhythm can help signal to the body and mind that it’s time to wind down. Consider:

Keeping bedtimes and wake times relatively consistent from weekday to weekend

Creating a simple wind-down routine including bath or shower, teeth brushing, and reading off screen before bedtime

Limiting stimulating screen time within the hour before bed when possible

Preparing backpacks, lunches, and clothes the night before

Making your bedroom comfortable, dark, and conducive to sleep

For those who consistently struggle with falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking rested, it can also be helpful to look beyond the bedtime routine itself. Stress, anxiety, nutrition, blood sugar, underlying health concerns, and other factors can all play a role.

For Nutrition Focus on Nourishment, Not Perfection

Back-to-school season can put a lot of pressure on parents to pack the “perfect” lunch. In reality, most families need something more important than perfection; they need meals and snacks that are nourishing, practical, and realistic to maintain. Instead of focusing on everything you think your family shouldn’t eat, start by thinking about what you can add. For children and adults alike, a balanced meal generally includes a combination of:

Protein to support growth and help with satiety

Healthy fats to provide energy and support overall health

Fiber-rich carbohydrates from foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains

A variety of nutrient-dense foods whenever possible

This might look like leftovers from dinner, a sandwich or wrap with protein and healthy fats, fruit and vegetables with hummus, or a simple combination of foods your child will actually eat. The goal is not to create a Pinterest-worthy lunchbox. The goal is to make nourishing choices easier.

Make Healthy Lunches More Sustainable

One of the simplest strategies is to create a short list of meals and snacks your family already enjoys, and batch cook on the weekend so you can rotate through them.

Easy protein options:

Eggs – consider cooking hard boiled eggs for the week ahead

Chicken or turkey- Consider sliced from the deli or batch cooking with yogurt, olive oil, and lemon juice for the week

Beans- Canned works fine. I also like to use my instant pot for dried beans and lentils. Store bought hummus is fine too.

Dairy- Greek yogurt and Cheese

Leftovers from dinner can be eaten at lunch or even breakfast.

Easy additions:

Fresh berries, banana, and grapes or prepped pineapple, melon, or apple slices

Sliced carrot, celery, peppers, or cucumber (technically a fruit)

Whole-grain crackers or bread

Nut or seed butter

Avocado

Roasted potatoes and other root vegetables

Toddlers and older children can participate. Involve them in choosing and preparing meals. Giving children some ownership can make the process easier and can help them develop confidence around food choices and preparation over time.

Remember, one meal does not determine your child’s overall health. Family nutrition is about offering options and letting children decide from these options what they eat and how much. If you’re looking for a simple framework for building balanced meals, the USDA’s MyPlate resources offer additional guidance for families.

Support Immune Health With Everyday Habits

The return to school also means more exposure to new germs. While it isn’t possible to prevent every cold or illness, supporting the foundations of health can help promote overall immune function. Some of the most important places to start are the same habits that support the rest of the body:

Prioritize sleep: Consistent, restorative sleep supports immune function as well as mood, learning, and overall well-being.

Offer a variety of nourishing foods: A diverse, nutrient-rich diet helps provide the vitamins, minerals, protein, and other nutrients the body needs to function well.

Pay attention to digestive health: The digestive system and immune system are closely connected. If your child is experiencing ongoing digestive symptoms, frequent illnesses, or other recurring concerns, it may be worth taking a closer look at the bigger picture.

Get outside and move: Regular movement and time outdoors can support physical health, stress management, and sleep.

Hygiene: Frequent hand washing is most important here.

Don’t Forget About Stress

Children experience stress too. A new school year can bring academic expectations, changing friendships, busy schedules, social pressures, and the challenge of adjusting to new routines. Parents are often managing their own version of that stress at the same time. When every afternoon and evening is filled with homework, activities, appointments, and responsibilities, families can quickly find themselves moving from one thing to the next without much time to rest or reconnect. Sometimes supporting health means asking whether the schedule itself is sustainable. Consider:

Does everyone have enough time to rest?

Are we over scheduled?

Is there room for unstructured play?

Do we have opportunities to spend time together without rushing?

Are there small ways we can make our mornings or evenings less stressful?

Supporting stress doesn’t have to mean adding another activity to the calendar. Sometimes it means protecting a quiet evening. Taking a walk together. Eating dinner without devices. Reading before bed. Or simply leaving enough space in the day to talk.

If your child is experiencing ongoing anxiety, mood changes, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, or physical symptoms that seem connected to stress, those concerns deserve attention too.

Make Movement a Normal Part of Family Life

Children don’t necessarily need organized sports to benefit from movement. The CDC recommends that children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day, but that activity can include everything from walking and biking to playing outside, dancing, and participating in sports. Movement is an important way to support energy, stress management, sleep, metabolic health, and overall well-being.

One of the easiest ways to make movement sustainable is to find ways to do it together. Take a family walk after dinner. Go for a bike ride on the weekend. Put on music and dance while cooking dinner. Spend time outside playing games. The goal isn’t to create another item on the family to-do list. It’s to make movement a normal and enjoyable part of everyday life.

Healthy Habits Work Best When They Work for the Whole Family

One thing I often encourage families to remember is that children don’t make health decisions in isolation. Their sleep routines are influenced by the household schedule. Their food choices are influenced by what is available at home. Their relationship with movement can be shaped by what they see modeled around them.

And parents’ health matters, too. When parents are exhausted, overwhelmed, struggling with their own health concerns, or simply trying to manage an impossible schedule, maintaining healthy routines can feel much harder.

That’s why I encourage families to think less about creating a “healthy child” and more about creating a healthy environment. You don’t need to prepare completely separate meals for every family member or transform your household overnight. Instead, look for changes that support everyone. Maybe that means:

Moving bedtime 15 minutes earlier

Keeping easy, nourishing snacks available

Taking a family walk after dinner

Protecting one or two evenings each week from over-scheduling

Spending more time outside

Finding small ways to make mornings less rushed

These habits may seem simple, but consistency matters more than perfection.

A Fresh Start Doesn’t Have to Mean Starting Over

The beginning of a new school year can be a great opportunity to reset. Pick one habit that would make the biggest difference for your family right now.

Once that habit begins to feel more natural, you can build on it. Healthy family routines aren’t created in one week at the beginning of the school year. They are built gradually, through small choices that fit into real life.

Looking for a More Comprehensive Approach to Your Family’s Health and Habits?

Healthy habits are an important foundation, but every family is different.
