When you hear \u201cTelangana\u201d, what comes to your mind? Hyderabad? Biryani? Charminar? Bathukamma?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For me, Telangana is much more than all of these.<\/p>\n

So, I thought, why not spend the next 10 days exploring the state we call home \u2014 its history, culture, food, people, festivals and all those little things that make Telangana special?<\/p>\n

\"Telangana<\/figure>\n

Welcome to Day 1 of Telangana in 10 Days.<\/strong> \u2764\ufe0f<\/p>\n

First, where is Telangana?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\"Beyond<\/figure>\n

Telangana is a landlocked state in southern India, located on the Deccan Plateau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It shares borders with Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The state covers around 1.12 lakh square kilometres and has 33 districts<\/strong>, with Hyderabad as its capital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Beyond<\/figure>\n

Two major rivers, the Godavari and Krishna<\/strong>, flow through the state and have played an important role in its geography and people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the interesting part \u2014 Telangana may be a young state, but its history is ancient.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A young state with an old history<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Telangana officially became a separate state on June 2, 2014<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But the history of this region goes back thousands of years.<\/p>\n

The land has seen the rule of several powerful dynasties, including the Satavahanas, Kakatiyas, Qutb Shahis and Asaf Jahis \u2014 the Nizams of Hyderabad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Ramappa<\/figure>\n

The Kakatiyas left behind some incredible architectural treasures, including the famous Ramappa Temple near Warangal<\/strong>, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n

The Qutb Shahis shaped Hyderabad as an important centre of culture and trade, while the Nizams left their own unforgettable mark on the city\u2019s architecture, food and lifestyle.<\/p>\n

And then there is Hyderabad!<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\"Charminar<\/figure>\n
\"Golconda<\/figure>\n

Let\u2019s be honest \u2014 when people outside Telangana think of the state, Hyderabad is probably the first thing that comes to mind.<\/p>\n

And I completely understand why.<\/p>\n

Charminar, Golconda Fort, Qutb Shahi Tombs, Chowmahalla Palace, Laad Bazaar, Irani chai and biryani<\/strong> \u2014 Hyderabad has a personality of its own.<\/p>\n

But today\u2019s Hyderabad is also HITEC City, Cyberabad, startups, IT companies and a fast-growing modern city.<\/p>\n

It is this beautiful combination of old and new<\/strong> that makes Hyderabad so unique.<\/p>\n

\"From<\/figure>\n

You can have an Irani chai in the morning and attend a corporate meeting in Cyberabad a few hours later.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s Hyderabad for you! \ud83d\ude04<\/p>\n

Telangana\u2019s language and culture<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Telugu is the predominant language<\/strong>, but Telangana\u2019s cultural identity has been shaped by many languages and communities.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re from Hyderabad, you already know that our conversations can effortlessly move between Telugu, Urdu, Hindi and English.<\/p>\n

That unique Hyderabadi way of speaking?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s an experience in itself!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our culture is equally diverse \u2014 from traditional art and handlooms to music, food, festivals and folk traditions.<\/p>\n

Bathukamma, Bonalu and more<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Bathukamma<\/figure>\n
\"Bonalu<\/figure>\n

Two festivals that are deeply associated with Telangana are Bathukamma and Bonalu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Bathukamma, with its beautiful flower arrangements and women coming together to celebrate, is one of the most beautiful expressions of Telangana culture.<\/p>\n

Bonalu brings its own colour, energy and devotion through traditional celebrations dedicated to Goddess Mahakali.<\/p>\n

\"Sammakka-Saralamma<\/figure>\n

And then we have festivals like Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara at Medaram<\/strong>, along with Ugadi, Dasara, Ramzan and many other celebrations that reflect Telangana\u2019s diverse cultural fabric.<\/p>\n

The story of statehood<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We cannot talk about Telangana without talking about its statehood movement.<\/p>\n

Telangana was part of Hyderabad State<\/strong>, and in 1956<\/strong>, the Telangana region was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh.<\/p>\n

The demand for a separate Telangana continued for decades, with major movements, particularly in 1969 and the later statehood movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After a long political and social struggle, Telangana became a separate state on June 2, 2014<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So, Telangana\u2019s identity isn\u2019t just about a place on the map.<\/p>\n

For many people, it represents belonging, culture, language and pride.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What makes Telangana special?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For me, it isn\u2019t one particular monument or festival.<\/p>\n

It is the combination.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the sarees, flowers, festivals, food, Telugu conversations, Hyderabadi humour, old forts, modern cities, villages, temples, mosques and the warmth of its people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s old Telangana and new Telangana existing together.<\/p>\n

And perhaps that\u2019s what makes it beautiful.<\/p>\n

Over the next nine days, we\u2019ll go beyond Hyderabad and explore the many sides of Telangana.<\/p>\n
Because there is so much more to Telangana than what we usually talk about.<\/strong><\/p>\n
