\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of the various definitions one
\nmight give to the term \u2018Evangelical\u2019, I would commend the necessary one that Evangelicals
\nregularly read the Scriptures<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>While
\nnot a sufficient definition\u2014the Devil himself is quite versed in God\u2019s Word\u2014it is
\nsurely in the bedrock of whatever Evangelical movement is inspired by and
\nemerges from the careful and regular reading of Scripture.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Evangelicals do not just believe
\nthat Scripture is the Word of God and therefore the fountain of all theological
\nand ethical teaching for the Church.\u00a0 <\/span>They
\nfind various ways to express this and the further claim that this Word is
\nwithout error.\u00a0 <\/span>Yet to be an Evangelical
\nis also to read the Scriptures, to know them, and to study them.\u00a0 <\/span>Claiming that the Bible is God\u2019s inspired
\nWord is translated further into an active reading of the Word, a love for God’s Word, and a life formed and transformed by God’s Word.<\/p>\n

We might trace the history of
\nthose who framed their faith by the Scriptures right back to the first century,
\nbut the designation \u2018Evangelical\u2019 should be reserved for that part of history
\nbeginning with the Reformation.\u00a0 <\/span>While we
\nmight suppose this to be the 16th<\/sup> century, beginning with Martin
\nLuther, we really need to step back a little in time, perhaps to the year 1378.\u00a0 <\/span>This is the year that John Wycliffe, after
\ncirculating a tract against popery and having recovered from an illness, set
\nabout translating the Bible into English.\u00a0
\n<\/span>At the time, two persons claimed the seat of Peter: Pope Urban and Pope
\nClement.\u00a0 <\/span>The reason for associating
\nWycliffe with what would come to be the Evangelical movement is that this
\ndesire to make the Scriptures available to all was also met with opposition
\nfrom the established Church.\u00a0 <\/span>The bishops
\ntried to suppress his work.\u00a0 <\/span>The
\nScriptures contradicted certain accumulated teachings of the Roman Catholic
\nChurch, and Wycliffe, in 1381, next opposed the doctrine of
\ntransubstantiation.\u00a0 <\/span>He also challenged
\nPope Urban when the latter called for Christians to kill Christians supporting his
\nrival, Pope Clement.\u00a0 <\/span>We see the seed of
\nthe Reformation planted as Scriptural authority began to challenge that of the
\nPope and of ecclesiastical teaching that found no footing in God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n

The reforming of the Roman
\nCatholic Church began with a return to Scriptural authority above all
\necclesiastical claims, some of which had no support in Scripture whatsoever and
\nothers dependent upon contorted interpretations.\u00a0 <\/span>The great Bohemian, pre-Reformation reformer,
\nJan Hus (c. 1369-6 July, 1415), taught that the Church was a community of faith
\nfounded upon Scripture and Christian love:<\/p>\n

Thus also many
\nof the faithful in common believe implicitly all the truth of Scripture, and
\nwhen a truth unknown to them is proposed, they search to see if it is laid down
\nin holy Scripture, and if this is shown to be the case they at once acknowledge
\nthe sense which the Holy Spirit insists on. Therefore, whoever has in common
\nwith others faith formed in love, this suffices for salvation when accompanied
\nwith the grace of perseverance (The Church, <\/i>ch. VIII).<\/p>\n

Hus opposed certain teachings of
\nthe Roman Catholic Church because of his devotion to Scriptural authority.\u00a0 <\/span>He was betrayed by the officials who gave him
\nsafe passage to the Council of Constance and burned at the stake on 6 July, 1415.<\/p>\n

Humanists at the time of the
\nReformation argued for an openness to reading the Scriptures.\u00a0 <\/span>Erasmus said that he dissented <\/p>\n

from those who
\nare unwilling that the sacred Scriptures, translated into the vulgar tongue,
\nshould be read by private individuals, as if Christ had taught such subtle
\ndoctrines that they can with difficulty be understood by a very few
\ntheologians, or as if the strength of the Christian religion lay in a man’s
\nignorance of it…. And I wish they were translated into all languages of all
\npeople, that they might be read and known. I wish that the husbandman may sing
\nparts of them at his plough, that the weaver may warble them at his shuttle,
\nthat the traveller may with their narratives beguile the weariness of the way.<\/p>\n

Evangelicals find spiritual
\nancestors in the likes of William Tyndale, who translated the New Testament
\ninto English.\u00a0 <\/span>He objected to one
\nclaiming that the Pope\u2019s Law surpassed God\u2019s Law, saying that, \u2018if God spare my
\nlife, ere many years, I will cause the boy who driveth the plough to know more
\nof the Scriptures than you do.\u2019\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Martin Luther confronted his accusers
\nat the Diet of Worms on 18 April, 1521 by affirming Scripture as the basis for
\nhis theology.\u00a0 <\/span>Allegedly, when he
\nrejected their insistence that he recant his teachings, he replied, <\/p>\n

Unless I am
\nconvinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not
\ntrust either in the pope or in the councils alone, since it is well known that
\nthey have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the
\nScriptures I have quoted, and my conscience is captive to the Word of God.<\/p>\n

Whether he actually said this in
\nso many words or not, this was the basic tenet from which the Reformation
\nproceeded.\u00a0 <\/span>Luther\u2019s claim was consistent
\nwith what he had written to Pope Leo X in 1518.\u00a0
\n<\/span>He said that<\/p>\n

he did not
\npretend to advance or defend anything contrary to the holy scriptures, or to
\nthe doctrine of the fathers, received and observed by the church of Rome, or to
\nthe canons and decretals of the popes: nevertheless, he thought he had the
\nliberty either to approve or disapprove the opinions of St. Thomas,
\nBonaventure, and other school-men and canonists, which are not grounded upon
\nany text.<\/p>\n

The Reformation would proceed upon
\nthe authority of Scripture, the reforming of ecclesiastical teaching upon that
\nauthority, and the unbinding of an individual\u2019s conscience from the blind
\nauthority churchmen held over Christians.<\/p>\n

The Anabaptist wing of the Reformation
\ntook things further.\u00a0 <\/span>Church teaching
\nwould not only be a reforming of the what had been taught on the basis of the
\nScriptures, it would only be what the Scriptures had themselves taught.\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, small groups gathered to study the
\nScripture and pray in Zurich from\u00a0
\n<\/span>January, 1525, onwards.\u00a0 <\/span>At his
\ntrial in 1527 in Rotterdam, the early Anabaptist minister, Michael Sattler stated,<\/p>\n

Ye ministers of
\nGod, I am not sent to judge the Word of God; we are sent to bear witness of it,
\nand, hence, cannot. consent to any law, since we. have no command from God
\nconcerning it; but if we cannot be discharged from the law, we are ready to
\nsuffer for the Word of God whatever sufferings are, or may be imposed upon us
\nall for the sake of the faith in Christ Jesus our Saviour, as long as we have
\nbreath within us; unless we be dissuaded from it by the Scriptures.<\/p>\n

Therein lies the calling of the
\nEvangelical: to be a witness <\/i>to what Scripture and Scripture alone
\nteaches.<\/p>\n

In 1529, John Calvin, the
\ninitiator of the Reformed tradition of the Reformation, changed his pursuit of
\nan ecclesiastical calling for that of the law because he, \u2018by reading the
\nscriptures, had conceived a dislike to the superstitions of popery\u2019.\u00a0 <\/span>Calvin, of course, returned to ecclesiastical
\nservice as one of the magisterial reformers.\u00a0
\n<\/span>He sought to establish Christian teaching on Scripture.<\/p>\n

Turning next to the Anglican
\nCommunion, Thomas Cranmer, who gave the Church of England its first Book of
\nCommon Prayer<\/i>, continued the Reformation on English soil.\u00a0 <\/span>He would become archbishop in the time of
\nKing Henry VIII.\u00a0 <\/span>When he was a fellow at
\nJesus College, Cambridge University, he was responsible for the examination of
\ncandidates for their bachelors and doctoral degrees.\u00a0 <\/span>John Foxe says, \u2018It was his principle to
\njudge of their qualifications by the knowledge they possessed of the
\nScriptures, rather than of the ancient fathers, and hence many popish priests
\nwere rejected, and others rendered much improved.\u2019\u00a0 <\/span>For his opposition to Rome, he would
\neventually be burned at the stake.<\/p>\n

In time, the Anglican Church
\nneeded reformation.\u00a0 <\/span>John Wesley\u2019s
\nattempt to bring about renewal unfortunately led instead to a break with the
\nChurch of England, and the breakaway Methodist Church was the result.\u00a0 <\/span>In a tract called and describing \u2018The
\nCharacter of a Methodist\u2019, Wesley wrote first of the authority of Scripture:<\/p>\n

all Scripture is
\ngiven by the inspiration of God\u2019\u2026. We believe the written word of God to be the
\nonly and sufficient rule both of Christian faith and practice; and herein we
\nare fundamentally distinguished from those of the Romish Church [1].<\/p>\n

Wesley writes especially of the
\nimportance of love, but this includes a love for God that entails keeping God\u2019s
\ncommandments found in Scripture (12).\u00a0 <\/span>Evangelical
\nfervour stems from this love for God and desire to obey His Word:<\/p>\n

All the
\ncommandments of God he [a Methodist] accordingly keeps, and that with all his
\nmight. For his obedience is in proportion to his love, the source from whence
\nit flows. And therefore, loving God with all his heart, he serves him with all
\nhis strength. He continually presents his soul and body a living sacrifice,
\nholy, acceptable to God; entirely and without reserve devoting himself, all he
\nhas, and all he is, to his glory [13].<\/p>\n

What characterized the
\nReformation and all subsequent reforms is a return to Scripture in all matters
\nof theology and ethics.\u00a0 <\/span>This reform characterizes
\nthe Evangelical movement through subsequent centuries, not only in terms of
\ndoctrinal authority but also in terms of devotion to God.\u00a0 <\/span>If Scripture truly is God\u2019s Word, how could
\nthe Christian not want to read it, memorise it, sing it, preach it, live by it,
\nand love it with the same love as that expressed for the rules of the Lord in
\nPsalm 19: \u2018more to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter
\nalso than honey and drippings of the honeycomb\u2019 (v. 10).\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Protestant mainline denominations
\nin our day, sadly, have drifted from this love of the Word of God and developed
\nteachings contrary to it.\u00a0 <\/span>They have
\nfollowed other loves, and often those directly contrary to the Scriptures.\u00a0 <\/span>Over the centuries, the Evangelical movement
\nexisted within them as a reforming movement, but in our day, Evangelicals have
\nceased to exist as a movement within the Protestant denominations because they
\nhave lost the battle to bring Scripture-based reformation in those places.\u00a0 <\/span>This has left Evangelicalism as a movement
\nsomewhat disoriented.\u00a0 <\/span>Is it nothing more
\nthan an orthodox expression of the Church, where that means an adherence to the
\nhistoric teaching of the Church that is Scripture-based, but no longer a reforming
\nmovement?\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Not necessarily so.\u00a0 <\/span>Wherever one finds a hunger for the Word of
\nGod, a study group devoted to learning the Scriptures, a pulpit ministry
\nexpositing the Scriptures, a theological college founded unapologetically and wholly
\nfor the study of God\u2019s Word above all else, or simply an individual so desiring
\nto know God that he or she daily reads and studies the Scriptures and seeks out
\nothers who do the same\u2014there one will find the fire of Evangelicalism yet
\naflame.\u00a0 <\/span>There one will hear testimonies
\nof those who have repented, of those who have found a new love for God, of
\nthose devoted to His Word, His Church, and its mission.\u00a0 <\/span>Indeed, the fire of every renewal, whether in
\none\u2019s own heart, in a family, in a church, in a denomination, in a seminary, in
\na mission organization, or in any Christian organisation begins with the flame
\nof desiring God and the kindling of a devotion to His Word.<\/p>\n

Lord, may
\npulpits be filled with expositors of the Bible.\u00a0
\n<\/span>May Christians, so filled with a love for You, frequently gather
\ntogether to hear Your Holy Word.\u00a0 <\/span>May the
\ndarkness of this world be filled with the Light of Scripture.\u00a0 <\/span>May this generation of Christians, so averse
\nto reading and so desirous of entertainment, find joy and peace in daily reading
\nand meditating on Your Word.\u00a0 <\/span>Renew us,
\nOh Lord!\u00a0 <\/span>Kindle in us a love for You and
\na desire for Your Word.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
