{"id":7064273,"date":"2026-09-23T00:43:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T00:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/agriculture\/where-have-all-the-nutrients-gone-agricultural-biodiversity-weblog\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T00:43:02","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T00:43:02","slug":"where-have-all-the-nutrients-gone-agricultural-biodiversity-weblog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7064273","title":{"rendered":"Where have all the nutrients gone? \u2013 Agricultural Biodiversity Weblog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-43996\">\n\t\t<!-- .entry-header --><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The \u201cnutrient collapse\u201d story has been doing the rounds for years, and we\u2019ve been picking at it on the blog for almost as long. <\/p>\n<p>Back in 2009, Jeremy looked at evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/agro.biodiver.se\/2009\/02\/new-and-worse-nutritionally-speaking\/\">older crop varieties could contain more minerals, protein and other nutrients than newer ones<\/a>, and discussed various possible reasons, including the intriguing possibility of a \u201cgenetic dilution\u201d effect as breeders selected for yield.<\/p>\n<p>By 2012, we were stressing that the evidence was more complicated than the <a href=\"https:\/\/agro.biodiver.se\/2012\/06\/nutrients-are-declining-in-modern-varieties\/\">headlines suggested<\/a>, and in 2019 we linked to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/agro.biodiver.se\/2019\/08\/brainfood-mineral-history-tomato-nutrients-phenotyping-plants-restoration-genomics\/\">critical review of the evidence by Robin Marles of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences in Canada<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Now the latest episode of the BBC\u2019s indispensable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/w3ct9998\"><em>More or Less<\/em> podcast asks again whether carrots are becoming less nutritious<\/a>, prompted by a listener who clearly hasn\u2019t been following our blog, and turns to Dr Marles, now retired, for the answer.
