For us a baby is defined as an infant right through to when they begin to walk \u2013 about 12 to 14 months old for most children.<\/p>\n<p>A toddler is a little person who is \u201ctoddling\u201d (or walks unsteadily) which generally lasts from 12 to 36 months old.\u00a0 It is a time of great development as they learn so much about the world, including developing their language skills, how to climb, dance and also try to get their huge emotions in check.\u00a0 I do love the saying, \u201cWhoever came up with the saying \u201cTerrible twos had never met a three year old\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Hiking_with_a_3_year_old\">Hiking with a 3 year old<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>By 36 months old (or 3 years old) your little one will not only be at least 15kg, but have some language skills, the ability to climb and run\u2026 and a whole lot of attitude.\u00a0 At least, by the time they were three all of my little ones were super determined little folk!<\/p>\n<p>3 to 4 year olds are referred to pre-schoolers and our tips for hiking with them on their own steam are covered in our post <a href=\"https:\/\/worldoftravelswithkids.com\/hiking-with-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hiking with Kids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In short, our Hiking with babies and toddlers post refers to carrying your young people in carriers for the bulk of the journey \u2013 that is, you will still (hopefully be able to carry a decent amount of ground!!!) By the time the kids are hiking on their own legs, things will slow down considerably and your days of lengthy hikes are most likely over \u2013 for a few years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" id=\"More_definitions_the_difference_between_hiking_and_trekking\"><strong>More definitions: the difference between hiking and trekking<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While we are making definitions: <em>Is there a difference between hiking and trekking?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In short, hiking is a long, pretty robust walk in the outdoors, on hiking trails or even formed paths.\u00a0 It can be for a few hours, a full day or even overnight.\u00a0\u00a0 On the other hand, trekking involves a multiple day hike or trek in a wild environment \u2013 or wilderness area \u2013 and is considered vigorous or even strenuous.<\/p>\n<p>We have done a lot of trekking with toddlers in Peru \u2013 and so have provided some trekking with toddlers suggestions at the end of this post.\u00a0 These are specific to Peru and it\u2019s altitude but might suffice for anyone who is intending to head out on a long fairly vigorous walking excursion with a toddler or infant in a hiking backpack!<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"Benefits_of_hiking_with_baby_or_hiking_with_a_toddler\">Benefits of hiking with baby or hiking with a toddler<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest \u2013 when you have a baby, or toddler then getting out of the house isn\u2019t easy.\u00a0 Talk to any mother of an under 2 and they are likely to share stories of sleep deprivation or just sheer exhaustion at the pace of living with a little one.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you can get outside, you will reap real benefits from hiking with a toddler. It\u2019s a real feeling of accomplishment when you get outside and climb that mountain (Or maybe just walk down the block!)\u00a0 In short, these are some of the benefits of hiking with a baby or little one.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Get some fresh air and a new perspective<\/li>\n<li>Get some exercise<\/li>\n<li>Start tackling this new life as parent, \u201cI can do this\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If the toddler is walking, wear them out and hope for a great sleep when you get home!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"Want_To_Trek_With_Toddlers_In_The_Andes\">Want To Trek With Toddlers In The Andes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3647\" title=\"Trekking with Toddlers, Trekking in Peru,. Trekking with Littles.\" src=\"https:\/\/worldoftravelswithkids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ariana-and-baby-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Trekking with Toddlers in the Andes\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<h3><span id=\"Before_trekking_with_a_toddler_in_the_Andes\"><strong>Before trekking with a toddler in the Andes\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This tips n\u2019 hints page provides some useful considerations about whether you really want to head for some trekking with toddlers.\u00a0 By toddlers, we mean children that can still be easily carried by their parents, so young people aged between 6 months and 3 years.\u00a0 This article refers to trekking with toddlers in the Andes but could apply to many places if you are considering an overnight camping trip.<\/p>\n<p>For children that can no longer be carried, but still have short legs and even shorter attention spans, e.g.; kids between the ages of 4 to 6 years, many of these questions also apply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>\u00a0<strong>1.\u00a0 <\/strong>How often do you trek yourself?\u00a0 Do you like to do long-distance trekking and are you comfortable with camping and sleeping in a tent?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0 What kind of trekking have you done recently with your child and how did they like the backpack?\u00a0 For 4 years plus: have you gone trekking recently, what were the difficulties, and how many hours were you able to go without stopping?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>As parents know (or soon discover) children have very unique personalities.\u00a0 My daughter was generally a tranquil child and walked at 14-months.\u00a0 Within reason, she didn\u2019t mind hiking for several hours while in the backpack, though we needed to stop frequently (every hour or so) and that added to the overall length of the day.<\/p>\n<p>My little boy walked before he was 1 and is an active and determined child.\u00a0 We took him to Machu Picchu and trekking in Peru when he was 20 months old and had 2 different styles of backpacks and a harness.\u00a0 We left the ruins after several hours: his screaming was in no way enjoyable for us or for the other visitors! It would be something to consider with any mountain trekking adventure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0<\/strong> What is your plan for altitude?\u00a0 The best advice for travel at high altitudes with toddlers is, \u201chow well do you know your baby\/toddler and can you distinguish between bad temper\/terrible twos\/ teething, and altitude sickness\u201d?\u00a0 The answer is that it\u2019s pretty difficult, as symptoms of altitude sickness can be anything from sleeping poorly to headaches to vomiting.\u00a0 These are frequent occurrences with all babies making it very difficult!<\/p>\n<p>For more information about how to deal with altitude, check out our post <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldoftravelswithkids.com\/tips-for-acclimating-to-altitude-with-kids\/\">Tips For acclimating To Altitude With Kids<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Are you a relaxed parent, or do you get stressed?\u00a0 Imagine that you are 2 days walk from the nearest road.\u00a0 Your child has a temperature \u2013 are you going to be able to cope with this?\u00a0 Or your child is vomiting at a high altitude.\u00a0 Having had this type of experience I can tell you that it\u2019s very stressful.\u00a0 Even though I know the mountains, I was still very worried.\u00a0 How will you react under these conditions?<\/p>\n<p>We strongly recommend 3 days <strong>minimum<\/strong> at <a href=\"https:\/\/worldoftravelswithkids.com\/cusco-with-kids\/\"><strong>Cusco<\/strong><\/a> for acclimatization of a small person (e.g. under 3 years); much, much longer if you can- before tackling the high mountain treks like Ausangate, Salkantay, or the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu.\u00a0 If you are coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/worldoftravelswithkids.com\/oceania-and-australia\/\"><strong>Australia or Oceania<\/strong><\/a> also takes into account it takes time for kids to get used to new time zones.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apusperublog.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/p1040001.jpg?w=584\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2606\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2606 size-full\" title=\"Trekking with Toddlers, Trekking in Peru,.
