The answer is no. Self-love is important for our mental and emotional health. Both are necessary to live out one\u2019s purpose and do God\u2019s will on earth.  Embracing self-love helps us navigate life\u2019s challenges with resilience and grace, fostering a deeper connection with our faith and a more fulfilling spiritual journey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt a quiet, nagging sense of \u201cless than\u201d? <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many women, this feeling starts early. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like me, you might remember the cruel jeers of childhood bullies calling you ugly and making fun of you at every turn. Those insults may have followed you through your teens and well into your twenties. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They did for me. Even as a young woman, after I accepted Jesus, I often wondered, \u201cIs self-love a sin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my experience running women\u2019s ministries and even starting one that served hundreds, I struggled with the idea of loving myself and wondering if it was right to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think many women may have that same question. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Insecurity of the 20-somethings<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, the challenge of loving oneself doesn\u2019t end in childhood or during those insecure teen years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can surface later in life as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young adulthood is certainly a time when you may question your worth and the value of your contribution. I know I did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My heart goes out to the 20- and 30-somethings today. It\u2019s a tough time of discovery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those feelings of not genuinely knowing who you are can cause you to make insane choices \u2013 some of which could impact you for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may struggle with Christian self-worth and wonder, <em>is self love a sin?<\/em> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should I even aspire to love myself more as a Christian woman?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Middle-Age Insecurity that Compromises Self-Love<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re over 40, you\u2019ll possibly relate to this. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What about when your years begin to show in the mirror, and you feel your youth and looks fading away?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-love may be a struggle as your body changes. Your role in the landscape of your life shifts. It can prompt you to ask that question: Is self-love a sin? <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a world that constantly tells women to either obsess over themselves or sink into insecurity, Christians often ask a fundamental question:\u00a0<strong>Is self love a sin?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The short answer is:\u00a0<strong>Self love is a sin when it turns into self-worship or pride. But caring for your soul and recognizing your God-given worth is not a sin \u2013 it is biblical stewardship.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think understanding the distinction between worldly self-obsession and biblical self-worth is essential.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does the Bible Say About Self Love?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In exploring this question- <strong>is self-love a sin<\/strong>\u2013 we have to look at how Scripture frames our value.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What makes us valuable in Christ? <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-base-2-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Romans 5:8:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cGod demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.\u201d (He valued you even before you knew Him.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-base-2-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Matthew 10:31:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cSo don\u2019t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.\u201d (God notices and cares for the small details of your life.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-base-2-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 Peter 2:9:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cYou are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God\u2019s special possession.\u201d (You belong to God and have high status in His eyes.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s our value. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God sees us as lovable and valuable. Remember this. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus Told Us to Do It<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me throw a curve ball. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sort of think we sin when we DON\u2019T love ourselves. Do you know the scripture I am thinking of? <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scripture where Jesus gave the commandment in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2022%3A39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 22:39<\/a>:\u00a0<em>\u201cLove your neighbor as yourself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the phrasing, Christian woman. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you see it? <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture inherently assumes a healthy baseline of self-regard. He gives us the answer to the question: Is self-love a sin? <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think He was thinking along this way: You cannot extend true grace, patience, or love to others if you are consumed by self-hatred, insecurity, and shame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can you love others if you do not love yourself?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember when I say God sees us as valuable? When we recognize our value, we can love others. We can draw folks to Jesus.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/godsygirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/learning-and-development-70-20-10-model-5.png\" alt=\"is self love a sin\" class=\"wp-image-37165 lazyload\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/godsygirl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/learning-and-development-70-20-10-model-5.png\" alt=\"is self love a sin\" class=\"wp-image-37165\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From \u201cLess Than\u201d : My Journey Beyond Self-Doubt<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know what it feels like to live trapped inside an ocean of insecurity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, I carried the weight of feeling like I never fit in. Or, I felt I was a cup that was never really full.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever felt that way? <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The painful comments from my youth echoed in my mind for decades, convincing me that I wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as I grew up, earned my Master\u2019s degree in Education, got married, and stepped into ministry as a pastor\u2019s wife in a large church, degrees and titles couldn\u2019t heal the old wounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>External success never cures internal inadequacy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read that again. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>External success never cures internal inadequacy.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know, it wasn\u2019t until I stopped letting the world -and my past \u2013 define me that everything changed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had to let God define who I was. That means erasing the things and memories that compromise and limit me. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I began seeing myself through the lens of my Creator, my perceived flaws minimized. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The truth of His Word began to magnify:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I stopped viewing myself as defeated and remembered that through Christ, we are\u00a0<strong>more than conquerors<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%208%3A37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 8:37<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>I stopped walking in shame and remembered His promise that He makes us\u00a0<strong>the head and not the tail <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy%2028%3A13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deuteronomy 28:13<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My self-esteem is no longer fragile because it isn\u2019t rooted in my appearance, my performance, or the opinions of others.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It is hinged on Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The table below shows you how it can look when it is imbalanced. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Worldly Self-Love vs. Biblical Self-Worth<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table class=\"has-fixed-layout\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Worldly Self-Love<\/th>\n<th>Biblical Self-Worth (Rooted in Christ)<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Exalts the self above God and others<\/td>\n<td>Sees the self through the eyes of the Creator<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Demands constant validation from the world<\/td>\n<td>Rests securely in God\u2019s peace and blessing<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Dependent on youth, beauty, and status<\/td>\n<td>Rooted in being fearfully and wonderfully made<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Leads to pride or deeper insecurity<\/td>\n<td>Leads to gratitude, humility, and strength<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 FOOLPROOF Ways to Root Your Identity in God\u2019s Truth<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are struggling with insecurity or wondering how to balance faith and self-regard, please know it\u2019s ok.  You\u2019re human. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is nothing wrong with you. You just need your Savior\u2019s help. And you need to follow my advice below:  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Say \u201cshut up\u201d and use Scripture<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When old insults, fear of fading beauty, or feelings of inadequacy surface, replace them immediately with God\u2019s declaration over your life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%202%3A10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ephesians 2:10<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just today, I was driving and dreading something I had committed to doing.  Immediately, the Holy Spirit gave me the insight to say to myself, \u201cStop it, Terri.\u201d I had to shift how I thought and remind myself of God\u2019s blessings in my life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, you have to silence the \u201cnegatives\u201d and tell yourself \u201cStop it, ________.\u201d Insert your name in the blank.: <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Shift from \u201cAm I Enough?\u201d to the fact<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insecurity thrives when we focus entirely on our own shortcomings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I really have to shift my focus, and so do you. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom comes when we recognize that while we are imperfect, Christ\u2019s grace is sufficient for us (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Corinthians%2012%3A9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Corinthians 12:9<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Rest in His Peace and Blessing<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to prove your worth to anyone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When your self-esteem is anchored in the Lord, you require nothing from the world to feel complete. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You relate in knowing that you need only these things: only His peace, His presence, and His blessing. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts: Walking in Victory<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So,\u00a0<strong>is self love a sin?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If self love means worshipping yourself, then yes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if it means honoring the temple God gave you \u2013 No. That\u2019s not a sinful love of self. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure your answer to the question \u201cIs self-love a sin?\u201d  is proportionate and healthy. It\u2019s focusing on Jesus and your identity in Him. <\/li>\n<li>Be grateful for who God made you to be, and don\u2019t focus on the negative. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Want to Keep Digging Into This?
