When you think about standing up and saying something that matters, making a decision that will affect other people, having a difficult conversation, or stepping into an opportunity God has given you, do you feel peace? Or do you feel pressure to get it right, perform well, and make sure everyone is happy with you?

As believers, we can be doing exactly what God has called us to do and still be doing it from a place He never called us to live: pressure, performance, and people-pleasing. We can love God, want to serve Him well, and genuinely desire to make a difference in the lives of others while carrying a weight that was never ours to carry.

There is another way to lead. We can lead from a place of peace.

That doesn’t mean leadership will always be easy or that we won’t experience fear, uncertainty, disappointment, or conflict. Leading from peace means we know who we are, we know Who called us, and we trust Him with the outcome.

So, what is driving your leadership right now?

1. Stop Leading From Pressure

Pressure says, “I have to make this happen.” It tells us that we are in control of the outcome and that everything is resting on our shoulders. But there is a significant difference between carrying responsibility and carrying a weight God never asked us to carry.

As leaders, we have responsibilities. We plan, work hard, make decisions, follow through, and do what we say we are going to do. But ultimately, we are responsible for our obedience, not the outcome. The outcome belongs to God.

That can be difficult to remember when we’re the ones doing the work. We see the emails that need answering, the people who need us, the decisions waiting to be made, and all the things that could go wrong. Before we know it, we’ve moved from faithfully stewarding what God has given us to believing everything depends on us.

One thing that has helped me is remembering that my life is not my own. As a follower of Jesus, it is Christ who lives in me. That changes how I look at the things God has entrusted to me. My leadership position belongs to Him. The people I influence belong to Him. The work He has given me belongs to Him. He is working in me, changing me and growing me through the places where He has positioned me, but ultimately, it is Him working through me who will make the difference.

Colossians 3:15 says, “Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.” I love that word—rule. Let peace be in charge. Let the peace that comes from Christ be what drives the motives of your heart.

Think about that for a minute. What is ruling your heart right now? Is it the peace of Christ, or is it overwhelm, anxiety, fear, frustration, or discouragement?

We may feel some fear without allowing fear to rule us. We may be unsure about our next step without allowing anxiety to take control. We may even be walking through an incredibly difficult season without allowing grief, anger, or desperation to become the driving force behind our decisions. Instead, we continually bring ourselves back to the peace that comes from trusting God.

Our role is to be obedient to Him, love others, be faithful, live from a place of faith, and continue allowing Him to develop His character in us. We trust Him even when things are difficult and even when the outcome isn’t what we hoped it would be.

That’s the first shift: stop leading from pressure and start leading from peace.

2. Stop Leading From Performance

Have you ever walked into a leadership situation worried about how you were going to perform? Maybe you wanted people to think you were smart, capable, qualified, or exactly the right person for the job. There is probably a little of that in all of us. We like affirmation. We like knowing people think we’ve done a good job.

The problem comes when our performance begins determining our worth.

Performance says, “My value is tied to how well I do this.” But that simply isn’t true. God established your worth and value long before you walked into your current leadership role. You are His masterpiece. You are His child. You are loved by Him. Your worth isn’t something you earn through achievement, and it isn’t something you lose when you make a mistake.

This is where comparison, perfectionism, numbers, recognition, and achievement can begin controlling us. A win doesn’t make you more valuable, and a disappointing result doesn’t make you less valuable or less called. You haven’t blown your calling because something didn’t work out the way you expected.

You can pursue excellence—and I believe you should pursue excellence—without allowing your results to determine your identity.

That distinction is incredibly important for Christian women in leadership. Prepare well. Keep learning. Grow your skills. Become a better communicator. Do excellent work. But don’t ask your accomplishments to tell you who you are. That job belongs to God.

So, ask yourself a hard question: Am I leading to be faithful, or am I trying to prove something?

When I show up to lead, I remind myself that I’m not showing up alone. The Holy Spirit is alive in me and working through me. I don’t have to manufacture everything in my own strength. I can show up based on who God says I am—chosen, redeemed, loved, and equipped to do the work He has prepared for me.

Jesus told His disciples in John 14:27, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.” He goes on to tell them not to be troubled or afraid. Think about that: peace is a gift Jesus has already given us. We don’t have to perform to earn it.

You have nothing to prove. Lead from that place of peace.

3. Stop Letting People-Pleasing Lead You

People-pleasing says, “If they’re unhappy with me, I must be doing something wrong.”

This can be especially difficult for us as Christian women because we can confuse being loving with keeping everyone happy. We want to be kind. We want to love people well. We want to represent Jesus in the way we treat others. Those are good things, but loving people and keeping everyone happy are not the same thing.

Sometimes faithful leadership requires a hard conversation. Sometimes it requires setting a boundary, saying no, holding someone accountable, or making an unpopular decision. Sometimes doing the right thing will disappoint someone.

When that happens, our job isn’t to become harsh or dismissive. We should listen. We should consider what the other person is saying. We should seek God’s guidance and be willing to admit when we are wrong. But someone else’s unhappiness does not automatically mean we made the wrong decision.

You can love people without being led by their approval.

Ask yourself: Whose approval is driving my decisions? Is there someone at work you’re constantly trying to please? Is there someone in your family whose reaction determines what you say or don’t say? Is there someone in your church, organization, or community whose approval has become too important to you?

Leading from peace means we can listen to someone who disagrees with us without immediately abandoning what we believe is right. If someone comes to us angry or disrespectful, we can establish a boundary around the conversation. We can say, “I want to hear what you have to say, but not like this. Let’s take a few minutes and come back to the conversation.”

We can listen, think, pray, and weigh what has been said. And after doing that, there may be times when we still say, “I’ve considered what you shared, but I believe this is the decision I need to make.”

Throughout that process, we continually go back to God: Lord, lead me. Guide me. Don’t let me say anything that dishonors You. Bring my thoughts and words back to what honors You. Help me lead from a place of peace that brings honor and glory to You.

That is very different from people-pleasing. It is Christ-centered leadership.

What Does It Look Like to Lead From Peace?

Here’s the distinction I want you to remember.

Pressure says, “It all depends on me.”

Performance says, “I have something to prove.”

People-pleasing says, “I need their approval.”

Peace says, “I know who I am, I know Who called me, and I can trust Him with the outcome.”

Peace doesn’t mean everything around us is peaceful. You can have a full calendar and still have peace. You can make a difficult decision and have peace. You can have someone unhappy with you and still have peace. You can walk through a season you never would have chosen and still experience the peace of Christ.

The enemy would love for us to live overwhelmed, stressed, defeated, discouraged, and frustrated. But no matter what is happening in your life today, you can continually return to the truth of who God is and who you are in Him.

You don’t have to carry the pressure of controlling the outcome. You don’t have to perform to prove your worth. You don’t have to secure everyone’s approval before you can confidently move forward.

You have Jesus.

What Is Driving Your Leadership Today?

Before you move on with your day, take a few minutes and ask yourself: Am I leading from pressure, performance, people-pleasing, or peace?

Maybe you recognize that you’ve been carrying something God never asked you to carry. Give it back to Him. Maybe your results have become too closely connected to how you see yourself. Remind yourself who God says you are. Maybe you’ve allowed someone else’s approval to have too much influence over your decisions. Ask God to help you love that person well without allowing their approval to lead you.

Then come back to this truth:

I know who I am. I know Who called me. And I can trust Him with the outcome.

That’s the kind of woman I want to be. That’s the kind of leader I want to be.

Let’s lead from peace.

Do you feel peaceful about the way you’re leading right now?
