A change in the way they walk, sleep, play, or interact with you.

Those little changes matter. Pain isn’t always obvious in dogs, and sometimes a change in normal behavior is the first clue that something isn’t right.

You know your dog’s everyday habits better than anyone. A dog doesn’t have to cry or limp to be hurting. Sometimes the first clue is simply that your dog starts doing something differently than usual.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), changes in a dog’s activity, posture, mobility, sleep, grooming, temperament, and interaction can be associated with pain.

10 Subtle Signs of a Dog in Pain

1. Hesitating Before Jumping or Using Stairs

Don’t look only for complete refusal. Watch for hesitation.

Maybe your dog pauses before jumping onto the sofa, thinks twice about the stairs, or suddenly waits for help getting into the car.

Reluctance or hesitation with familiar movements can accompany pain, stiffness, or mobility problems.

I’ve learned to pay attention not only to whether my dog can do something, but whether he’s doing it differently. My second Cocker Spaniel, Dexter, gently hopped off a curb during a regular walk when I noticed a sudden limp. He was all too happy to keep walking, but I noticed the slight limp.

My dog wound up tearing his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), which first started with a slight limp while walking. Although surgery followed and recovery was smooth, I am grateful I paid attention and saw our veterinarian that same week.

PRO TIP: If stiffness becomes a pattern, you may also want to read my article, “Natural Remedies for Arthritis in Dogs.”

2. Having Trouble Getting Comfortable

Watch your dog during things like circling, lying down, getting back up, when changing locations, or repeatedly repositioning.

Restlessness, pacing, and frequent position changes can be signs of discomfort or pain.

3. Panting for No Obvious Reason

Panting does not automatically mean pain.

Dogs pant when they’re hot, excited, stressed, or after exercise.

However, unusual panting at rest, especially when accompanied by other behavioral or physical changes, warrants attention.

PRO TIP: I suggest reading Vital Signs Every Pet Parent Should Know to better understand your dog’s baseline and know when something is abnormal.

4. Acting More Distant or More Clingy

A normally social dog may start withdrawing.

Another dog may suddenly seek much more attention or reassurance.

Pay attention to changes at either end of the spectrum, especially when they’re unusual for your dog.

I know Alvin’s normal. I know how he moves, where he sleeps, how he asks for attention, and what gets him excited. If something about that pattern changes, I pay attention. It doesn’t mean I know what’s wrong, but it tells me something may be worth watching.

PRO TIP: I track all of my dog’s health concerns, behaviors, meals, and notes for my veterinarian in our DogMinder.

5. Sleeping Differently

Watch for changes such as:

Sleeping considerably more

Waking more frequently

Changing favorite sleeping locations

Struggling to settle

Repeatedly repositioning

The important word here is change. A dog’s normal sleep varies. You’re looking for something that’s different from what’s typical for your dog.

For example, a dog who normally won’t sleep through a thunderstorm is different from a dog who suddenly develops a new sleep pattern. Know what’s normal for your dog so you can recognize when something changes.

6. Standing, Sitting, or Lying Differently

A hunched posture, unusual sitting position, shifting weight, or difficulty getting from one position to another may indicate discomfort.

Again: don’t diagnose based on posture alone.

Look at the whole dog and what has changed.

7. Licking or Chewing One Area Repeatedly

Dogs may repeatedly lick, bite, or groom an uncomfortable area.

However, licking has many possible causes, including skin and allergy problems, so repetitive licking alone doesn’t tell you why it’s happening.

PRO TIP: Take a deeper dive into my article, What To Do If Your Dog Bites His Paws.

8. Losing Enthusiasm for Things They Love

This can be much subtler than a dog refusing to move, as your dog may still walk but no longer race toward the leash for walk time.

They may still play but stop sooner.

They may still climb onto the sofa, but pause first.

I don’t just ask myself, “Is my dog eating and walking?” I ask, “Is he doing the things he normally loves in the way he normally does them?”

I also take videos on my phone in case I want to show my veterinarian and ask if a visit is warranted, or show her when we make an appointment. Sometimes dogs act fine when they visit the vet!

9. Suddenly Disliking Touch or Grooming

Watch for:

Pulling away when touched.

Looking back toward your hand.

Avoiding the brush.

Suddenly resisting being picked up.

Growling or becoming irritable during handling.

Growling isn’t automatically “bad behavior.” It’s communication.

A sudden change in how a dog responds to touch or handling deserves attention, especially if it’s out of character.

10.
