visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cThe Best All-in-One Exchange Traded Funds\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-secret=\"iAkyx7Qcl5\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The rise of these all-in-one ETFs is clear to understand:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">select one ETF aligned to your risk tolerance (i.e., 100% equities or 80% equities or other).<\/li>\n<li class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">contribute regularly to this ETF in registered accounts.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>keep at it until retirement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As the <em>MoneySense<\/em> article hinted at \u201c\u2026<em>for many investors, that\u2019s probably enough. You could have considerable success investing in an asset allocation ETF for decades without adding anything else.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>True. So, for some, one ETF can be used to rule them all.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But you might recall there are many ways to invest:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buying and owning real estate.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/diy-and-private-equity-investor-profile-matthew-wilson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Becoming a private equity investor<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in the stock market via owning various funds or companies themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Become an entrepreneur and grow a business (or two)!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For our path, my wife and I have focused on this hybrid investing approach:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>owning 20+ Canadian stocks for income and growth, while<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>index investing the rest.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That approach worked well to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/financial-independence-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reach financial independence for us as far back as 2024<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, it certainly didn\u2019t mean one ETF was enough for us and in your particular case, it might not work either.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, owning <strong><em>more than one all-in-one ETF<\/em> <\/strong>offers benefits: that approach lets you customize your asset allocation, potentially reduce management fees, and optimize for tax efficiency across different accounts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 1: how about a two-fund solution: <\/strong>you could own a \u201cEQT\u201d fund like ZEQT or TEQT for long-term capital growth and then mix-in a balanced bond ETF (as you wish) to adjust for your risk tolerance \u2013 a risk-level that might dial down a bit as you approach retirement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 2: how about an asset location split: <\/strong>you could own a 100% equity fund in your TFSA for long-term growth but have a more modest risk \u201cBAL\u201d fund that is 60% equities\/40% bonds inside your RRSP, since those <strong>tax-deferred assets (RRSPs\/RRIFs) are generally tapped first in retirement income drawdowns<\/strong> and therefore should not be subject to full stock market risks.<\/p>\n<p>On that very subject, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nCOjcnOvW3k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>check out our YouTube video on that!!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Retirement Drawdown Options\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nCOjcnOvW3k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There are also other tilts (back to the <em>MoneySense<\/em> article) that could make some sense in your portfolio:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can own your personalized dose of crypto via ETFs.<\/li>\n<li>You can own sector ETFs for various company focus and concentrations.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>You can own factor-based ETFs or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/smart-beta-etfs-for-your-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smart-beta ETFs<\/a> at your leisure too.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA factor is essentially a measurable characteristic shared by a group of securities that research has associated with differences in expected returns or risk. Rather than simply buying companies in proportion to their market capitalization, a factor strategy deliberately tilts toward stocks exhibiting particular characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFactor investing does require patience. Value, size, profitability and other factor premiums don\u2019t appear on schedule. Buying a factor ETF after it has performed well and abandoning it during the next period of underperformance is counterproductive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, we ignore cryptocurrency exposure in our portfolio, we already have some sector-based risk with our basket of Canadian dividend paying stocks, and while factor-based ETFs seem interesting to me, we\u2019ve done just fine without more moving parts and so we\u2019re not fixing now what isn\u2019t broken\u2026<\/p>\n<p>That means we don\u2019t need any new shiny toys in our portfolio at this time although I won\u2019t rule out new participants to our portfolio <em>forever.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>MoneySense<\/em> article was very measured with investing and portfolio construction concepts I\u2019m very aligned with:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you do add satellite ETFs, keep their role explicit and their allocations reasonable. Decide on the percentages beforehand, rebalance periodically, and resist changing them simply because one has recently performed particularly well or poorly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you\u2019re just starting out with investing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/just-starting-out-how-to-get-started-with-investing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I suggest you read this post or share it with the young adult in your household.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Answering \u201cWhy\u201d, \u201cWhat\u201d and then \u201cHow\u201d is at the heart of any planning process.
