The attorney general\u2019s office claimed that the company had spent about five years enforcing race-based quotas and hiring goals.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Starbucks has agreed to settle a Florida-led lawsuit accusing it of discriminating against workers by granting preference to minorities in both hiring and pay.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>The Tallahassee Democrat<\/em>, the settlement was announced on September 17 and is expected to resolve the state of Florida\u2019s claims against the coffee giant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Floridian deserves to be hired, promoted, and compensated based on merit, qualifications, and character\u2014not race or sex,\u201d Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said in a press release. \u201cThis resolution ensures that Starbucks\u2019 policies and practices fully comply with Florida\u2019s civil rights laws. DEI can never be an excuse to violate civil rights. We appreciate Starbucks\u2019 cooperation in reaching this settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uthmeier\u2019s original lawsuit, filed at the end of 2025, accused Starbucks of intentionally discriminating against applicants and workers from \u201cnon-favored races,\u201d defined as white, Asian, or multiracial. The attorney general\u2019s office claimed that the company had spent about five years enforcing race-based quotas and hiring goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendant\u2019s racist employment actions have caused significant financial losses and damages to Florida residents,\u201d the lawsuit says, adding that such practices prevent \u201ca vast number of Florida residents\u201d from obtaining employment, securing promotions, and receiving a reasonable and competitive level of pay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5109223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5109223\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalreader.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/pexels-engin-akyurt-1437318.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5109223\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legalreader.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/pexels-engin-akyurt-1437318.jpg\" alt=\"Starbucks Workers Unionize, Enjoy Uncommon Benefits\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5109223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Engin Akyurt from Pexels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cStarbucks made DEI more than a slogan,\u201d Uthmeier said when the lawsuit was first announced. \u201cThey turned it into a mandatory hiring and promotion system based on race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The settlement agreement, which contains no admission of wrongdoing, obliges Starbucks to reimburse about $1 million in legal fees to the Florida Department of Legal Affairs; the company must also verify its compliance each year for up to four years.
