For this reason, welfare becomes a sensitive topic. Welfare noncompliance is a spectrum, with Canadian animals <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/animal-welfare-how-a-lack-of-transparency-in-canadian-slaughterhouses-is-keeping-us-in-the-dark-273173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most commonly victim to<\/a> stunning mistakes and unloading or handling issues that can result in injured or dead animals in the lead into the slaughter process. This is especially true for birds (chickens) but, regardless of species, these are completely unacceptable mistakes for the agriculture industry.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the incident is reported and whether penalty is warranted is unfortunately up to the discretion of the inspector, with many incidents often going unreported. In the long term, maintaining both capital and social investment into extension and educating stakeholders on welfare are vital to the <a href=\"https:\/\/file-cdn.mercyforanimals.org\/mercy4animals.wpengine.com\/sites\/450\/2026\/06\/CAWS-2026-Canada-Scorecard-PDF-Report-3.pdf?_ga=2.30624188.2061472849.1784297121-1055132663.1784297121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reaffirmation of standards<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/winnipeg.citynews.ca\/2025\/11\/06\/manitoba-hog-farms-global-antibiotic-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veterinarians<\/a> can serve as proxies to farm advisors, aiding the operational success of best management practices, reaffirming national or provincial standards, and improving agrifood traceability. However, provincial policies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/farmers-react-provincial-veterinary-service-budget-9.7133722\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Brunswick\u2019s recent service privatization<\/a> (in line, now, with the majority of Canada) spreads access to trusted information sources away from the individuals who need them and makes welfare improvements difficult.<\/p>\n<p>In the short term, Canada has instead seen a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manitobacooperator.ca\/livestock\/canadian-farms-at-risk-from-animal-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rise in animal activist cases<\/a>, often individuals misidentifying normal animal behaviours as signs of distress. These kinds of cases, while assumed to be well-intentioned, subscribe to an animal rights way of thinking and can, in fact, negatively impact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manitobacooperator.ca\/livestock\/canadian-farms-at-risk-from-animal-activism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental status<\/a> of the animals attempting to be \u2018liberated.\u2019 An animal in fear is an animal in distress. In part, meat, dairy, and egg industries have responded by introducing additional certifications that differentiate their products with welfare considerations beyond national minimums. <a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Organic&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Organic refers to something that is derived from living matter. Organic farming is farming that uses inputs which are not synthetic. Therefore, an organic farmer can still use chemicals as long as they are derived from an organic source.&lt;\/div&gt;\" href=\"https:\/\/saifood.ca\/glossary\/organic\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-gt-translate-attributes=\"[{\" attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\",=\"\" \"format\":\"html\"}]\"=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Organic<\/a> animal production, for example, requires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/poultry\/nutrition-and-management-poultry\/organic-production-practices-for-poultry?query=organic%20production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outdoor access<\/a> and uses medications <a href=\"https:\/\/canadabeef.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/3208_CANBEEF_factsheet_ORGANIC-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only when necessary<\/a> \u2013 two major <a href=\"https:\/\/winnipeg.citynews.ca\/2025\/11\/06\/manitoba-hog-farms-global-antibiotic-resistance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticisms of <\/a><a class=\"glossaryLink\" aria-describedby=\"tt\" data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Conventional&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Conventional agriculture is agricultural practices which can include the use of agronomic inputs such as synthetic chemicals whether they are pesticides or fertilizers, and they can include treated seeds.
