(Will McLelland | AL.com)Will McLelland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>By David Sher<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When I was a child growing up in Birmingham in the 1950s, there were four things I looked forward to all year: my birthday, Christmas in downtown Birmingham, the Iron Bowl, and the Alabama State Fair.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, I still have a birthday.<\/p>\n<p>But the Christmas downtown of my childhood is gone. The Iron Bowl left Birmingham. And the Alabama State Fair I remember is gone too.<span id=\"more-17787\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You may have noticed that I said the fair is gone even though the <strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamastatefair.com\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">2026 Alabama State Fair<\/a><\/strong> is scheduled for September 18\u201327 at the Birmingham Race Course.<\/p>\n<p>I hope people go.<\/p>\n<p>I hope they have a wonderful time.<\/p>\n<p>But it is nothing like the Alabama State Fair of my childhood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It Was Enormous<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is almost no way to describe its magnitude.<\/p>\n<p>The old Alabama State Fairgrounds in west Birmingham covered about 117 acres.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t the kind of fair you could set up in a parking lot for a week and then haul away.<\/p>\n<p>It was a sprawling, permanent complex that felt almost like a city unto itself.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands upon thousands of people walked the midway.<\/p>\n<p>And I\u2019m not exaggerating what I remember.<\/p>\n<p>In 1948, an estimated <strong>65,000 people attended Kiddies\u2019 Day alone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-five thousand people. In one day.<\/p>\n<p>The year before, school buses carrying children arrived from <strong>16 Alabama counties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder it seemed like the whole world was there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Midway Was Another World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You could hear the fair before you could see all of it.<\/p>\n<p>Barkers called out from every direction, trying to lure you into games of chance.<\/p>\n<p>Throw a ring around a bottle.<\/p>\n<p>Knock down the milk bottles.<\/p>\n<p>Shoot at a target.<\/p>\n<p>Toss a ball.<\/p>\n<p>Pitch coins onto dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Everywhere you looked, enormous stuffed animals hung above the booths as prizes.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed like everybody could win one of those big plush animals.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody but me.<\/p>\n<p>There were Ferris wheels, bumper cars, carousels and rides that spun you around until you could hardly walk straight.<\/p>\n<p>There were livestock competitions and exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>There were circus acts, high-wire performers, trained animals, stunt shows and fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>And yes: <strong>there was automobile racing.<\/strong> The Fairgrounds had a major racetrack and a grandstand seating thousands. A 1948 fair featured big-car races, midget auto races and automobile stunt shows.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was the food.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton candy. Candy apples. Corn dogs. Popcorn. Roasted peanuts. Barbecue. Snow cones.<\/p>\n<p>Today that might not sound exotic.<\/p>\n<p>To a Birmingham kid in the 1950s, it was spectacular.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I spent Almost Every Nickel I Had<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of my strongest fair memories has nothing to do with a giant ride.<\/p>\n<p>One year I came across a game displaying beautiful glass plates in different shapes and sizes.<\/p>\n<p>They glistened under the lights.<\/p>\n<p>You threw nickels toward the plates, and if your nickel landed just right, you won the plate.<\/p>\n<p>I decided I was going to win something for my mom.<\/p>\n<p>So I started throwing nickels.<\/p>\n<p>And kept throwing nickels.<\/p>\n<p>As I remember it, I spent almost $3, which was a lot of money for a child in those days.<\/p>\n<p>But finally I won a couple of plates.<\/p>\n<p>I proudly carried them home, convinced my mother would be thrilled with her present.<\/p>\n<p>She wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Both my mom and dad were upset I had spent almost all my money.<\/p>\n<p>I expected congratulations.<\/p>\n<p>I got a lesson in financial responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>More than 70 years later, I can still see those plates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Greatest School Day of The Year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then there was School Day.<\/p>\n<p>Schools let out early and children of all ages descended on the Fairgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>We roamed around in herds.<\/p>\n<p>There were no cell phones.<\/p>\n<p>There was no texting.<\/p>\n<p>No parents were using an app to see where you were.<\/p>\n<p>You just wandered.<\/p>\n<p>And everywhere I turned, I saw somebody I knew.<\/p>\n<p>Friends. Classmates. Aunts. Uncles. Cousins.<\/p>\n<p>The fair wasn\u2019t just entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of Birmingham\u2019s great annual communal gatherings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There Is One Part I Can\u2019t Romanticize<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is another memory that has to be part of this story.<\/p>\n<p>The Alabama State Fair of my childhood was segregated.<\/p>\n<p>As I remember it, African Americans were allowed to attend only on designated\u00a0 \u201cColored Days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 1961 federal court case later documented racial segregation and discrimination at the Fairgrounds and Kiddie Land.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s part of the Birmingham we lived in too.<\/p>\n<p>I can treasure my childhood memories while recognizing that not every Birmingham child was given the same opportunity to make them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Wish You Could Have Seen It<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Alabama State Fair is coming to the Birmingham Race Course this month.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m glad the name survives.<\/p>\n<p>But when people my age hear <strong>Alabama State Fair<\/strong>, we see something else.<\/p>\n<p>We see a gigantic midway filled with thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p>We hear barkers calling.<\/p>\n<p>We smell cotton candy and popcorn.<\/p>\n<p>We see cousins and classmates coming toward us through the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>We remember leaving school early.<\/p>\n<p>We remember the rides that scared us.<\/p>\n<p>And the stuffed animals we desperately wanted to win.<\/p>\n<p>And in my case, I remember two little glass plates that cost me almost every nickel I had.<\/p>\n<p>If you never experienced the Alabama State Fair at the Birmingham Fairgrounds in those days, you missed something very special.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>If you grew up in Birmingham, you might enjoy these columns:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>David Sher is the founder and publisher of\u00a0<strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/comebacktown.com\/\">ComebackTown<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s past Chairman of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce (BBA), Operation New Birmingham (REV Birmingham), and the City Action Partnership (CAP).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/comebacktown.com\/enewsletter-sign-up\/\">Care about Birmingham,\u00a0sign up for ComebackTown newsletter<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Invite David to speak for free to your group about how we can have a more prosperous metro Birmingham. dsher@comebacktown.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Visited 2,375 times, 7 visits today)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds gather for the Alabama State Fair in Birmingham, Ala., Thursday, April 16, 2026.
