Because telecoms is moving closer to the centre of the AI action \u2013 more programmable, distributed, intelligent, indispensable \u2013 and yet most of the money and power (as we know very well) sits elsewhere. Let us present the corporate bullet points\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Infrastructure beneath infrastructure<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rcrwireless.com\/20260909\/networks\/nokia-ai-optical-ntworks?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nokia\u2019s \u201cscale-across\u201d argument<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is that AI clusters are spilling beyond individual data centers, making long-distance optical networks part of the compute architecture.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rcrwireless.com\/20260909\/opinion\/connectivity-has-become-the-deciding-half-of-ais-infra-race-reader-forum?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glenn Lurie makes the same argument<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from the commercial side: connectivity can no longer be an afterthought to compute, power and data-center construction. The network is the business \u2013 to get AI to work, at work. Like we said in our piece yesterday about exec migration between sectors,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rcrwireless.com\/20260908\/carriers\/deutsche-telekom-t-mobile-poach-from-aws-ge-vernova-ai-talent-loop?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telecoms is not telecoms anymore<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 it is an interleaved layer, part of a programmable cloud-controlled stack, called AI, and leadership must be apprised of everything. Nokia had led.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More invisible, and more valuable<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rcrwireless.com\/20260909\/network-infrastructure\/att-strikes-deal-with-amazon-leo-as-eu-operators-seek-d2d-stake-us-opens-d2d-tap?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AT&amp;T\/Leo is a good example<\/a><\/strong>: fiber, 5G, and satellite are being presented as one connectivity platform. The customer doesn\u2019t care about the network mechanics underneath \u2013 so long as the data finds the model, the model returns the insight, and the action is taken. (<em>It\u2019s an IoT story<\/em>.)\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.equinix.com\/blog\/2026\/09\/05\/equinix-horizon-2026-the-recap\/?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equinix is pushing the same abstraction<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in a different part of the stack, with Fabric One automating connectivity across clouds, networks and AI infrastructure. We talked yesterday about\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/verizons-big-ai-deal-dt-t-mo-talent-loop-awsazure-interconnect-aglve\/?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verizon\u2019s big fiber build-out in the US<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(80m new miles of Corning-made glass fiber) to underpin a \u201csingle, converged architecture\u201d to \u201cunite mobile connectivity and broadband\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Exposing new network capabilities<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vodafone.com\/news\/newsroom\/technology\/vodafone-launches-quality-on-demand-in-germany?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vodafone\u2019s quality-on-demand API<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0lets businesses dynamically request particular network-performance profiles rather than simply buying connectivity. Lurie points to Open Gateway as the emerging common interface between applications and networks. Which looks like an important shift, ostensibly, from selling access to selling network behaviour.\u00a0<em>But what capabilities?\u00a0<\/em>Well, Deutsche Telekom is using\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telekom.com\/en\/newsroom\/latest-updates\/media-information\/2026\/09\/digital-x-telekom-shows-live-drone-detection-for-the-first-time?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-ISAC passive RF sensors on towers<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for live drone detection; 5G\/6G will build on the service with ISAC. Again, a very different proposition from traditional connectivity \u2013 the network becomes a distributed sensing platform, as the story goes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Intelligence creates a trust problem<\/strong>: The UK\u2019s Digital Catapult is being funded to build a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digicatapult.org.uk\/about\/press-releases\/post\/innovate-uk-backs-digital-catapult-to-build-uks-neutral-assurance-capability-for-private-5g-networks\/?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vendor-neutral assurance capability for private 5G<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and an auditing framework for AI-native telecom networks, including trustworthiness, explainability, auditability, and continuous monitoring (etc). In other words, the industry is moving beyond standards and capabilities, and beyond test and deployment logistics, to finally address serious-minded questions about performance and trust. It shows, at once, what a smart and mature technology 5G is for critical industries, especially in its private form \u2013 and just how hard it is to box-shift technology to an impossibly-diverse global economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Where does all of this leave us?\u00a0<\/em>Well, old network boundaries are blurring, and starting to dissolve. Satellite is another access layer; optical transport is part of AI infrastructure; metro interconnection is part of AI inference; mobile networks are becoming APIs and sensors. The old distinctions \u2013 between terrestrial networking, cloud computing, AI modelling, satellite systems \u2013 are increasingly difficult to maintain. And the economics, as ever, are awkward. Lurie points out the mismatch again: hyperscalers will spend<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rcrwireless.com\/20260909\/opinion\/connectivity-has-become-the-deciding-half-of-ais-infra-race-reader-forum?utm_campaign=RCR%20Newsletter&amp;utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_B0uJFrTpPriIgEN4YE4qHdYr0_xdDKXirQw8pO-6yssaUzAPc1iVRrbi8W8S0aLOfA90U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$760bn on capital projects this year<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0while global telco cap-ex will decline about 2%. Apples and oranges, but the meaning is clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Show me the money<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 say telcos; and that cap-ex will jump again. But the industry is being asked, urgently, to build critical infrastructure and capabilities for the first- and second-generation of cloud-era new-money makers to ride on top of. Big opportunities, but real and present risks as well. Application interfaces, priority services, private networks, integrated sensing, optical comms, satellite complements \u2013 all offer ways for telcos to move higher up the value chain, as most have promised since the early days of 5G.
