Kennedy Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/secretary-kennedy-announces-new-us-preventive-services-task-force-members.html\">announced<\/a> eight new members to the <a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/tag\/uspstf\/\">U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF)<\/a> on Thursday, filling out the 16-member volunteer panel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are five things to know about the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014The USPSTF, founded more than 40 years ago, is a panel of experts who make recommendations on preventive health services like screenings, counseling and medications to improve the country\u2019s population health. When the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010, the law gave the USPSTF new power by requiring payers to fully cover preventive services at the panel rates A or B.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014Seth Corey, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/tag\/cleveland-clinic\/\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, will serve as the task force\u2019s new chair. He will be joined by appointees including pediatrician Patrick Hunter, cardiologist Ronald Karlsberg, preventive-cardiology professor Venkatesh Murthy, health economist Stephen Parente, family physician Goldie Stands-Over-Bull, gastroenterologist Louis Wilson and radiologist Dennis Wulfeck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014The appointments come nearly four months after Kennedy dismissed vice chairs John Wong and Esa Davis, which <a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/2026\/05\/rfk-uspstf-healthcare\/\">resulted in outcry<\/a> from healthcare groups. Kennedy had been clashing with the panel, with reports emerging last year that he wanted to dismiss all of the USPSTF\u2019s members due their views being too \u201cwoke.\u201d The announcement also follows a stretch in which five other members\u2019 terms expired without replacement, and the previous chair departed on his own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014Kennedy said the move will strengthen the task force\u2019s scientific rigor, noting that the new appointments will \u201censure it asks hard questions, follows the evidence wherever it leads and maintains the highest standards of scientific integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014The <a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/tag\/american-medical-association\/\">American Medical Association<\/a> reacted to the news with caution, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/press-center\/ama-press-releases\/ama-statement-newly-appointed-members-uspstf\">noting<\/a> that the task force\u2019s new additions represent \u201ca significant departure\u201d from its traditional membership.
