Cascade Ponds is inside Banff National Park, so a valid Parks Canada pass is required. A day pass runs about $12.25 for an adult, and kids 17 and under get in free. Wade or swim in the ponds

The water is shallow and noticeably warmer than most Banff lakes, since it’s not glacier-fed. There are no lifeguards, so it’s swim at your own risk, but it’s one of the most forgiving spots in the park for kids to get in the water.

Early in the season is best since it’s a hangout spot for the geese, and the water gets a bit dirty from them.

2. Kayak or SUP in the ponds

While swimming is allowed at Cascade Ponds, I think kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding is even better (because of the many geese that swim in the ponds). Bring your own or rent in Banff, and don’t forget to fill out the mandatory self-certification permit before you head out.

3. Walk the loop trail

The full loop around the bigger Cascade Pond is 800 meters and takes about 30 minutes at a slow pace. It crosses two footbridges and is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, except for a short set of stairs right at the start (that you can bypass on the grass).

You can also walk along the smaller Cascade Pond but there’s no bridge so you can’t make a loop. However, there’s something fun at the far end of the smaller pond – see #10 below.

4. Have a picnic or BBQ

With over 40 picnic tables and multiple fire pits, this is one of the few spots in Banff set up specifically for cookouts, not just a bench and a view.

5. Build a fire in the evening

Firewood needs to be purchased inside the park; for example, the Banff IGA sells it – you cannot collect dead wood from the ground. But once you’ve got it, the fire pits here make for a great end to the day (especially pretty at sunset).

6. We loved it for picnicking before kids and now love it even more with kids. It’s easy to reach, has real amenities (picnic tables, fire pits, toilets), and the water and trail are both low-risk for small children.

Is Cascade Ponds free to visit?
There’s no separate entry fee for the site itself, but you do need a valid Parks Canada park pass to be in Banff National Park.

Is swimming allowed at Cascade Ponds?
Yes, though it’s unsupervised – there are no lifeguards. The water is shallow and milder than most Banff lakes, which is why it’s popular with families.

How far is Cascade Ponds from the town of Banff?
About a five-minute drive. It’s one of the closest natural attractions to the townsite.

How far is Cascade Ponds from Calgary?
Roughly 1.5 hours by car, depending on traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Is Cascade Ponds stroller and wheelchair accessible?
Mostly. There’s a short set of stairs down from the parking lot, but the main loop trail after that is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly.

Can you fish at Cascade Ponds?
You can, but you’ll need a national park fishing permit, which is required anywhere you fish inside Banff National Park.

Can you paddleboard or kayak at Cascade Ponds?
Yes, paddleboards and kayaks are common here in summer. Just make sure you clean, drain, and dry your gear before and after, since Parks Canada actively enforces rules to prevent aquatic invasive species.

Are dogs allowed at Cascade Ponds?
Yes, on a leash.

Can you have a campfire at Cascade Ponds?
Yes – it’s one of the few day-use areas in Banff with dedicated fire pits. Firewood must be bought inside the park; you can’t bring your own in from outside.

Is Cascade Ponds busy?
It can get busy, especially on summer weekends and afternoons. However, we visited on an August weekend and had no issue finding parking. And had the waterfalls to ourselves!

What’s the best time of year to visit Cascade Ponds?
Summer is the most popular for swimming and picnics, but it’s genuinely worth visiting year-round – locals love it for fall colours and even winter sledding near the hill.

Is there camping at Cascade Ponds?
No, it’s a day-use area only.
