ordinary person?

These aren’t merely questions about confidence.

They are questions about the foundation of human dignity.

Christianity offers a radically different starting point:

Your value comes before your achievements.

You do not have to accomplish something extraordinary to become worthy of love.

You are style="font-weight: 400;">Before asking what you are supposed to accomplish, there is another question:

Who are you?

Christianity begins its answer with creation.

Human beings are not merely biological machines.

We are not simply consumers.

We are not only workers.

We are persons.

We possess dignity.

We have the capacity to know, love, choose, create, communicate, take responsibility, and enter into relationships.

This changes the entire meaning question.

If your worth comes from God, then another person’s opinion cannot create your value.

Your achievements cannot create it.

Your failures cannot erase it.

Your circumstances cannot manufacture it.

Your popularity cannot determine it.

You have value before you ever accomplish anything.

And that can be an enormous relief.

Because it means your life doesn’t begin with a demand to prove yourself.

It begins with a gift: you exist.

This is the heart of the subject.

If God is merely a distant being somewhere beyond the universe, it may be difficult to understand what He has to do with ordinary human life.

But Christianity does not describe God that way.

It presents God as Creator.

That means God created us.

This changes the direction of the search.

Instead of asking only:

“What purpose can I invent for myself?”

we can ask:

“What purpose is already written into the reality of being human?”

That is a much deeper question.

This is one of the most interesting questions surrounding the subject.

Suppose someone decides that their life’s ultimate purpose is to accumulate as much money as possible.

Can they simply declare that purpose meaningful?

Perhaps personally.

But does declaring something meaningful automatically make it objectively meaningful?

What if another person decides that their purpose is to control everyone around them?

What if another decides that their purpose is to serve others?

Are all of these purposes equally good?

Most of us instinctively believe they aren’t.

We admire courage.

We condemn cruelty.

We respect sacrifice.

We value honesty.

We praise compassion.

We criticize selfishness.

That raises a difficult question:

Where do these standards come from?

Christianity’s answer is that goodness is ultimately rooted in God.

Meaning therefore isn’t simply whatever we happen to prefer.

This may be one of the most important distinctions.

We often assume that if something is meaningful, it should make us happy.

But some of the most meaningful things human beings do are difficult.

Caring for someone who needs you.

Raising a child.

Standing up for someone who is being mistreated.

Telling the truth when lying would be easier.

Admitting that you were wrong.

Forgiving someone.

Serving without recognition.

Remaining faithful when circumstances are discouraging.

None of these guarantees comfort.

Some can be deeply costly.

Yet we recognize that they can be meaningful.

Why?

Because meaning is not identical to pleasure.

Sometimes what is worth doing is precisely what costs us something.

If God gives human life meaning, does that mean we lose our freedom?

Christianity says no.

In fact, Christian thought connects meaning and freedom very closely.

Freedom isn’t merely the ability to choose between endless options.

It is also the ability to direct ourselves toward what is good.

Think about it.

A person can technically choose almost anything and still become trapped by their choices.

If someone repeatedly chooses selfishness, selfishness can become part of their character.

If someone repeatedly chooses dishonesty, dishonesty can become habitual.

If someone repeatedly chooses generosity, generosity can become part of who they are.

So freedom isn’t just about having choices.

Our choices are helping determine the person we become.

That makes freedom a profoundly meaningful gift.

Every day contains hundreds of decisions.

Some seem insignificant.

Others aren’t.

What do I do when someone disappoints me?

Do I tell the truth?

Do I apologize?

Do I forgive?

Do I help?

Do I ignore?

Do I treat another person with dignity?

Do I choose what is easy or what is right?

Over time, these choices form patterns.

Those patterns form character.

And character influences future choices.

This is one of the fascinating ideas in Karol Wojtyła’s philosophical work. The Acting Person<span style="font-weight: Scholarly studies of the work likewise emphasize Wojtyła’s view that the person is revealed through action.

For anyone interested in going deeper into that relationship between the human person, action, and meaning, the book itself provides a substantial philosophical exploration of these questions:<a formation of a human life.

Almost everything.

Christianity does not define the meaningful life simply as a successful relationship with God in isolation.

It connects love of God with love of neighbor.

That means meaning has a social dimension.

Other people are not background characters in our story.

They are part of the purpose of our lives.

The person sitting next to you.

<span style="font-weight: powerful.

If everything ends permanently, what ultimately remains?

Christianity responds with resurrection and eternal life.

It says the human story does not end at death.

That claim changes the meaning of everything that comes before it.

If life is eternal, then how we live now matters enormously.

Christianity does not simply say:

“Believe in God so that you can escape this world.”

Its vision is richer.

The Christian hope is ultimately about restoration—the renewal of creation and the fulfillment of human relationship with God.

That means the physical world matters.

Human relationships matter.

Justice matters.

Creation matters.

What we do with our lives matters.

Faith is not an escape from being human.

It is a claim about what human existence is ultimately for.

A serious discussion about meaning has to acknowledge this.

Many people construct deeply meaningful lives without believing in God.

They love their families.

<span style="font-weight: people.

It would be unfair to dismiss these lives as meaningless.

The deeper philosophical question is different:

Does meaning ultimately depend on something beyond human choice?

Someone can experience profound personal meaning without believing in God.

But Christianity argues that ultimate meaning is grounded in God rather than merely produced by human preference.

That is a philosophical and theological claim—not a reason to dismiss people who see the world differently.

Suppose caring for your family gives your life tremendous meaning.

That is personal.

But it doesn’t mean it is meaningless to anyone else.

Likewise, serving your community may be personally meaningful while also contributing to other people’s lives.

Christianity can embrace this personal dimension while still insisting that meaning has an ultimate foundation in God.

Your individual calling may be unique.

But the broader purpose—to love God, love others, pursue goodness, and live faithfully—is not something you have to invent from scratch.

We often imagine calling as something dramatic.

A platform.

A ministry.

A career.

A book.

A major mission.

A spectacular achievement.

But what if your calling today is simply to be faithful with what is directly in front of you?

To treat your family well.

To study honestly.

To encourage have to be a spectacular life.

It has to be a faithful one.

We can become so focused on finding our “big purpose” that we overlook the small purposes already surrounding us.

A conversation can matter.

A meal shared with 400;">Human lives are built from ordinary moments.

If we only expect meaning to appear in extraordinary experiences, we may miss most of our lives.

This is worth saying clearly.

A profession can be part of your purpose.

But it does not have to be your entire purpose.

You are more than your occupation.

If you lose a job, you have not lost your identity.

If you change careers, you have not abandoned God’s purpose.

If your plans change, God is not necessarily finished with you.

This is one reason grounding identity in God can provide stability.

Your circumstances may change.

Your identity as a person loved and created by God does not have to change with them.

At first, freedom and meaning may seem unrelated.

They aren’t.

If you are completely controlled by approval, are you free?

If you cannot say no to every impulse, are you free?

If you must constantly prove yourself, are you free?

If resentment controls your decisions, are you free?

Christianity presents freedom as something deeper than simply having unlimited choices.

Authentic freedom is connected with choosing the good and becoming the person we are capable of becoming.

This is also a major theme in Wojtyła’s philosophy: scholarship on The Acting Person highlights his connection between human action, freedom, responsibility, and personal fulfillment.

That means God’s guidance need not be understood simply as a list of restrictions.

It can instead be understood as an invitation to use freedom well.

If our choices matter, then responsibility matters.

This is both exciting and uncomfortable.

It means our lives are not completely passive.

We cannot control everything that happens to us.

But we can often choose how we respond.

We can choose whether suffering makes us more compassionate or more bitter.

We can choose whether success makes us arrogant or grateful.

We can choose whether failure teaches us or convinces us that we are worthless.

We can choose whether disagreement becomes hatred or an opportunity for understanding.

That doesn’t mean people can simply choose their way out of every difficulty.

Circumstances genuinely matter.

But our responses matter too.

And those responses gradually shape our character.

It is:

“What Will I Give?”

A consumer asks:

What can life give me?

A person searching for deeper meaning eventually asks:

What can I give my life to?

That shift is profound.

You begin looking for something worthy of your time.

Something worthy of your energy.

Something worthy of your loyalty.

Something worthy of sacrifice.

Something worthy of love.

Christianity says that God is worthy of all of these.

And because God is worthy, serving other people becomes meaningful too.

This may sound strange.

We usually think meaningful experiences should feel rewarding.

But some of the most meaningful things people do involve sacrifice.

A parent sacrifices sleep.

A friend sacrifices convenience.

A caregiver sacrifices time.

A person pursuing justice may sacrifice comfort.

A Christian may sacrifice personal preference because they believe obedience to God matters more.

Sacrifice reveals what we consider valuable.

We don’t sacrifice for things we believe are worthless.

When a person willingly gives something for the sake of love, truth, or goodness, that sacrifice itself becomes a statement:

“This is worth more to me than what I am giving up.”

This question can sound intimidating.

But Christianity’s answer is surprisingly relational.

God does not simply hand humanity a checklist of achievements.

The Christian life is fundamentally about relationship with God and a life of love toward others.

That means the question of purpose isn’t only:

“What task am I supposed to perform?”

It is:

“How am I supposed to live?”

How do I love?

How do I serve?

How do I use my freedom?

How do I treat people?

How do I respond to suffering?

How do I handle power?

How do I handle failure?

How do I remain faithful?

Those questions apply regardless of occupation.

If God gives human life meaning, then another person’s life cannot be meaningless simply because they are unsuccessful.

The elderly person.

The child.

The lonely person.

The person who has made serious mistakes.

The person nobody notices.

Christianity insists that human dignity does not depend on usefulness.

This is a powerful idea in a culture that often evaluates people according to productivity.

A person’s worth comes before their usefulness.

That is why the Christian understanding of meaning has consequences for how we build families, churches, communities, and societies.

Maybe one of the most damaging questions is:

“Am I impressive enough to matter?”

Christianity gives a different question:

“Am I living faithfully with what God has given me?”

Those questions lead to very different lives.

The first produces comparison.

The second produces responsibility.

The first asks:

“Am I ahead of them?”

The second asks:

“Am I becoming who I am called to be?”

The first depends on applause.

The second can survive obscurity.

A meaningful act does not become meaningful only when someone notices it.

A parent caring for a child doesn’t need an audience.

A person praying for someone doesn’t need public recognition.

Someone telling the truth privately is still telling the truth.

Someone choosing forgiveness without receiving applause is still forgiving.

This matters because modern life can make visibility feel like significance.

But God does not need a human audience to know the value of an act.

This question deserves an honest answer.

Maybe you never discover one spectacular mission statement for your life.

<span
