Built around an unnamed conflict widely understood to be the US-led Iraq war, the film has become the kind of phenomenon no marketing budget could buy, projected to reach 2.5 billion yuan (US$372.5 million) largely through word of mouth.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Its Hong Kong and overseas release will revive geopolitical arguments over a Chinese commercial film entering a narrative world long associated with <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3364464\/what-does-hit-film-about-iraq-war-say-about-chinese-views-world?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">American power and war<\/span><\/a>. My parents offered another kind of review, which was neither about geopolitics nor historical responsibility. Their take was simply that any war brings immense suffering to ordinary people.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">For 50 years, the Middle East had reached my parents largely as television news. The film gave those distant wars ordinary faces. They said little else on the drive home. I kept returning to a question from my research: why do some films <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3301513\/chinas-ne-zha-2-still-flying-high-highest-grossing-animated-movie-all-time?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">travel across borders<\/span><\/a> while others remain trapped by the expectations attached to where they were made?<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">I have heard the standard diagnosis of the decline of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/society\/article\/3013205\/opera-gangsters-and-swordplay-rise-and-fall-hong-kong-cinema?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Hong Kong cinema<\/span><\/a>: co-productions corroded the craft; filmmakers chased mainland money; the cure is to become more authentically Hong Kong, more local, more unmistakably ours.
