was something <a href=\"https:\/\/rosilindjukic.com\/the-beauty-of-throne-of-grace\/\">you never intended to do<\/a>. He brought his sin into the light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Psalms 38\u201340, we see a pattern of repentance, dependence, restoration, and renewed obedience that gives us a practical picture of what to do when we\u2019ve sinned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-infobox kt-info-box12568_2054e4-68\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-link-wrap info-box-link kt-blocks-info-box-media-align-top kt-info-halign-center\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"kt-infobox-textcontent\">\n<h2 class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-title\">What Should You Do When You\u2019ve Sinned?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-text\"><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Acknowledge your sin honestly<\/strong><br \/><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Repent with genuine sorrow<\/strong><br \/><strong>3. Receive God\u2019s correction<\/strong><br \/><strong>4. Stop trying to punish yourself<\/strong><br \/><strong>5. Turn to God as your salvation<\/strong><br \/><strong>6.<\/strong> <strong>Resolve to walk differently<\/strong><br \/><strong>7. Wait on God<\/strong><br \/><strong>8. Remember and testify of His mercy<\/strong><br \/><strong>9. Delight in God\u2019s Word<\/strong><br \/><strong>10. Receive God\u2019s love<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I Know What It Feels Like to Be Trapped in Sin<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was there in 2000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was <a href=\"https:\/\/rosilindjukic.com\/what-is-true-repentance\/\">backslidden in Bible school<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know, right? <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Craziest place on earth to be backslidden, but there I was sitting in the main auditorium of Christ for the Nations Institute, trying to worship, but unable to get there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because I knew that if anyone else knew my secrets, I\u2019d be kicked out and sent home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hot, muggy day I sat out on the back steps of the building where I worked and wept. I felt horrible about the shambles that was my Christian walk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I couldn\u2019t seem to get free from the trap I was in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I felt stuck in this downward spiral \u2013 and I had no idea how far down it would take me. It scared me to think about what was at the bottom of this horrible ride I was on!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thankfully, God rescued me just a couple of months later!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t until years later that I came to fully understand the love and grace of God in those moments \u2013 even that day when I sat outside of work weeping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even then, God\u2019s grace was at work, chipping away at the hard exterior that I had allowed to grow over my heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I didn\u2019t need to learn how to punish myself for my sin. I needed to learn how to return to God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s what I eventually began to understand from Scripture.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can David Teach Us About What to Do After We Sin?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/38\/1-17\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalms 38\u201340<\/a> give us a picture of David responding to sin with honesty, repentance, dependence on God, renewed obedience, waiting, testimony, delight in God\u2019s Word, and receiving God\u2019s mercy.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Acknowledge Your Sin Honestly<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psalm 38 opens with a long account of David\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He feels the weight of his sin<\/li>\n<li>He is exhausted and weak<\/li>\n<li>He is sorrowful<\/li>\n<li>He has open sores<\/li>\n<li>His illness \u2013 whatever it is \u2013 is foul-smelling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David\u2019s condition was more than just emotional and spiritual; he also had a physical illness that was the result of his sin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David spares nothing from God. He openly acknowledges his condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first step to repentance from our sin is looking openly and honestly at where we are and where our sin has led us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we skip this crucial step, we\u2019ll never fully repent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We must reject the temptation to make light of our condition, rationalize away the seriousness of our actions, or cherry-pick words that make our sin seem somehow less sinful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You cannot repent from something you refuse to acknowledge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stop minimizing it. <\/li>\n<li>Stop rationalizing it. <\/li>\n<li>Stop blaming everyone else. <\/li>\n<li>Stop rewriting what happened. <\/li>\n<li>Bring it honestly before God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-infobox kt-info-box12568_c919d7-2a\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-link-wrap info-box-link kt-blocks-info-box-media-align-top kt-info-halign-center\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"kt-infobox-textcontent\">\n<h2 class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-title\">Ask yourself:<\/h2>\n<p class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-text\">What exactly did I do?<br \/>What was happening in my heart?<br \/>Who was affected by my actions?<br \/>What am I tempted to minimize or excuse?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Repent With Genuine Sorrow<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFor I will declare my iniquity;\u00a0I will be in anguish over my sin.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/38\/18\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 38:18<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conviction leads us toward God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shame tells us to hide from Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we fully acknowledge our condition and refuse to let ourselves soften the blow of our sin, our heart can repent with sorrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allowing ourselves to feel the anguish of our sin is critical, because that emotion will eventually lead us to a righteous hatred of that sin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even more, it enables us to feel what God feels for us in our present condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It allows us to feel what God felt when His only Son hung dying on the cross while bearing the burden of our sin. When we feel that anguish, we gain an understanding of just how serious sin truly is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sin isn\u2019t just \u201cmaking a mistake\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mistake is something that goes wrong while we are in the process of doing something right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sin is the bad result of our wrongful actions in the first place.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI agree with God about my sin, turn from it, and turn back toward Him.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Receive God\u2019s Correction<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI was mute, I did not open my mouth, because it was You who did\u00a0it.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/39\/9\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm\u00a039:9<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David understood his suffering through the lens of God\u2019s correction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God\u2019s correction isn\u2019t evidence that He has abandoned you. Scripture presents God\u2019s discipline as something connected with His love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discipline differs from punishment in this regard: discipline is a consequence given as a loving gesture to remind us of the importance of obedience to the Lord.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the painful result of us bucking against the boundaries He has set to teach and train us to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Punishment is a public flogging or mocking of one who has done wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>God punishes His enemies, but disciplines those He loves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMy son, do not despise the chastening of the L<span class=\"yhwh\">ORD<\/span>, nor detest His correction;\u00a0For whom the L<span id=\"yui-gen41\" class=\"yhwh\">ORD<\/span>\u00a0loves He corrects, just as a father the son\u00a0in whom\u00a0he delights.\u201d Proverbs 3:11-12<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Stop Trying to Punish Yourself for Your Sin<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSacrifice and offering You did not desire; my ears You have opened.\u00a0Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/40\/6\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 40:6<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we realize the seriousness of our sin, our tendency is to swing from the one extreme of rationalizing away its seriousness to the other extreme of trying to make atonement with our own actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than repenting and then trusting in the blood of Jesus to atone for our sin, we begin to inflict punishment on ourselves by flogging ourselves verbally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than sitting in God\u2019s presence and allowing Him to wash us clean of our filth, we avoid His presence; we keep our distance with our head down in shame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We will never prove to God the depth of our sorrow by trying to make atonement for our sin, avoiding Him, and sulking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes we even tend to try to prove to God how sorry we are by:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But God already knows our heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>His blood was shed so that we<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<em><strong>don\u2019t have to do these things.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus already paid for what we cannot pay for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Stop Trying to Fix Everything Yourself<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMake haste to help me,\u00a0O Lord, my salvation!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/38\/22\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 38:22<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe you\u2019re like me: once I\u2019ve admitted my dire circumstances, I go into planning mode. I will sit down and make a list and plan how to get myself out of the mess I\u2019m in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planning and list-making are incredibly therapeutic for me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when it\u2019s my sin we\u2019re talking about, this kind of therapy is a trap. Soothing my wounded heart with my own plans for salvation is very dangerous because it circumvents the salvation of God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only that, it\u2019s deceptive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enemy would love nothing more than for me to fall right into the same trap he fell into, assuming he was greater than God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes repentance requires us to surrender not only our sin, but also our desperate attempts to control the consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sinner who has fully repented is a sinner who is keenly aware of the fact that he is utterly incapable of extricating himself from his current position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salvation is only in God, and any attempt of our own to save ourselves will only dig ourselves a deeper pit.<a href=\"https:\/\/rosilindjukic.com\/30-day-prayer-challenge-and-journal-for-revival\/\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Decide to Walk Differently<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI\u00a0<span class=\"nkjv_first-word\">said<\/span>, \u2018I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue;\u00a0I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, while the wicked are before me.&#8217;\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/39\/1\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 39:1<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may think that this step contradicts the previous one, but here is why it doesn\u2019t:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we have fully repented and openly received the cleansing salvation of God, we must decide in our heart to walk differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you know what led you into sin, don\u2019t simply pray that you\u2019ll resist it next time. Ask God to show you what needs to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with this very important caveat:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We must acknowledge that we can\u2019t do this on our own; we need the grace of God to enable us to live righteously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The danger in not doing step 5 is that we are prone to live independently of God, to rely on our own wisdom and abilities to get us out and keep us out of danger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only God can do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And only the grace of God enables us to live righteously. None of us has the ability to keep God\u2019s law; that\u2019s why Jesus had to come to earth and die!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have God\u2019s law in the Old Testament, but we\u2019re so flawed that we can\u2019t even go one day without breaking His law \u2013 inadvertently or purposefully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s where God\u2019s grace comes in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It gives us the power to rise above our flaws, reject temptation, and live the righteous life He\u2019s called us to.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Wait on God Instead of Rushing Ahead<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/40\/1\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 40:1<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-infobox kt-info-box12568_eeb929-d1\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-link-wrap info-box-link kt-blocks-info-box-media-align-top kt-info-halign-center\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"kt-infobox-textcontent\">\n<h2 class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-title\">What does waiting on God look like after you\u2019ve sinned?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"kt-blocks-info-box-text\">Don\u2019t make major decisions from a place of shame.<br \/>Don\u2019t run away from God.<br \/>Don\u2019t try to fix everything overnight.<br \/>Sit with Him.<br \/>Pray.<br \/>Listen.<br \/>Let Him lead you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love the imagery of the Hebrew word for \u201cwait\u201d, which is qavah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means to bind together by twisting, as you would twist a rope. It reminds me of the verse, <em>\u201cAnd a threefold cord is not quickly broken.\u201d Ecclesiastes 4:12<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what does it mean to wait upon God?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can mean that we sit in prayer, silently waiting to hear His voice \u2013 linger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can mean that instead of acting hastily on a decision, we wait for His wisdom \u2013 expect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can mean remaining in His presence until we feel the peace we need \u2013 hope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In each context of waiting on God, something supernatural happens; our life becomes more tightly intertwined with Him as we grow stronger in our Christian walk.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Remember What God Has Done for You<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI have proclaimed the good news of righteousness in the great assembly; indeed, I do not restrain my lips,\u00a0O L<span class=\"yhwh\">ORD<\/span>, You Yourself know.I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart;\u00a0I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation;\u00a0I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/40\/9-10\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 40:9-10<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is incredible power in our testimony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even Revelation 12:11 says, <em>\u201cAnd they\u00a0overcame him\u00a0by the blood of the Lamb and by the\u00a0word of their testimony\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rosilindjukic.com\/spiritual-weapons-battle-is-long\/\">Our testimony is a powerful weapon<\/a> to defeat the enemy, and defeating the enemy here is vital because it establishes our victory!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not think for a moment that after repenting and embracing the salvation of God, resolving to live righteously by grace, and then waiting on God, the enemy will just lie there and say, \u201cMan, it\u2019s really too bad that I lost that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s going to come back harder and stronger to try to defeat you. You need to have a strategy. You need to have your weapons ready, and one powerful weapon is your testimony!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Daily rehearse your testimony to your own heart<\/strong> and take every opportunity to share it with others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You deliver a fatal blow to the enemy each and every time you do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Remember your testimony.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then: <strong>Don\u2019t let your latest failure become the only thing you remember about yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Get Back Into God\u2019s Word<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law\u00a0is\u00a0within my heart.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/40\/8\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 40:8<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David loved God\u2019s law \u2013 or, in today\u2019s terms, God\u2019s Word. All throughout the Psalms, we read about David\u2019s love for God\u2019s law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many times, when we\u2019ve sinned, we avoid God\u2019s Word out of guilt and condemnation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because God\u2019s Word is trying to do what God designed it to do: lead us back to the One who will forgive and restore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we\u2019ve sinned, the best thing we can do is to open God\u2019s Word, let it expose us to God\u2019s holiness, and then let Him renew and restore us.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Receive God\u2019s Love<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cDo not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O L<span class=\"yhwh\">ORD<\/span>; let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/nkjv\/psa\/40\/11\/s_516001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psalm 40:11<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever we\u2019ve been disciplined by God, it is important that we open our hearts to fully embrace the love He has for us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t hold yourself back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you\u2019ve confessed your sin, repented, received God\u2019s correction, stopped punishing yourself, surrendered your attempts to save yourself, and committed to walk differently, there is one more thing you need to do:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He disciplines those He loves. His discipline is only a sign that you\u2019re a true daughter of God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And just as any parent who lovingly disciplines their child, afterward embraces them and assures them of their love, God wants to embrace you and assure you of His love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you\u2019ve confessed your sin, repented, received God\u2019s correction, stopped punishing yourself, surrendered your attempts to save yourself, and committed to walk differently, there is one more thing you need to do:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let God love you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Zephaniah, we read an urgent call to repentance. Run toward Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David didn\u2019t hide his sin from God. He brought it into the light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you can do the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your sin is not a reason to stay away from God.
