They came alive on the trail in a way I didn’t see anywhere else.

Even then, I believed dogs deserved more than a life spent mostly inside the house or walking the same neighborhood streets every day. I wanted to show people what Dachshunds were capable of and inspire them to experience more of the world together.

Over the years, one of the comments I’ve heard most often is that hiking is great exercise for dogs.

I agree. I just don’t think that’s the biggest benefit.

What Makes Hiking So Different From an Everyday Walk

While most people see hiking as physical exercise, dogs experience it as something much bigger. It’s not even comparable to a normal walk around the neighborhood.

Burning energy is certainly part of the experience, but I don’t think it’s the biggest reason hiking has had such a positive impact on my Dachshunds over the years.

One of the reasons I keep coming back to the trails is because I’ve watched what happens when my dogs are allowed to fully engage with the environment around them.

People often hike to reach a destination or enjoy the scenery. Dogs are usually much more interested in everything that happens along the way.

Every scent tells a story. Every rustle in the bushes deserves investigation. Every fallen log, patch of moss, or change in the trail offers something worth exploring.

What looks like “stopping all the time” to us is often a dog gathering information about the world.

That difference is one of the reasons hiking is so valuable. Instead of rushing our dogs through an environment, we’re giving them time to interact with it.

I want to be clear that neighborhood walks are valuable too. They provide exercise, opportunities to sniff, and are an important part of many Dachshunds’ daily routine.

But they’re also limited.

You often walk the same streets, encounter the same smells, and follow the same path day after day. Sidewalks don’t offer many opportunities to climb over things, navigate uneven ground, investigate wildlife scents, or choose different routes.

Nature, on the other hand, is full of opportunities.

One section of trail might require stepping over roots. Another may cross a small bridge or wind around rocks. A breeze might carry the scent of deer that passed through earlier that morning. Birds call from the trees, squirrels chatter overhead, and the ground feels different with almost every few steps.

Behavior scientists sometimes refer to these opportunities as affordances, meaning possibilities for action that the environment naturally offers. A forest simply provides far more of these opportunities than a sidewalk does.

Most enrichment activities focus on one or two needs at a time. A food puzzle encourages problem solving. A sniffing game encourages scent work. A game of fetch provides exercise.

Hiking is different because it naturally combines many of those experiences into one outing.

Without me having to plan an activity or set anything up, my Dachshunds are sniffing, exploring, making decisions, navigating obstacles, moving their bodies in different ways, and experiencing new sights, sounds, smells, and textures throughout the hike.

That’s why I believe hiking is so much more than exercise.

Following Their Nose

Dogs experience the world through scent in ways we can hardly imagine.

When my dogs stop to sniff a patch of ground for what feels like forever, I remind myself they’re not wasting time. They’re reading information.

Who passed by?

How long ago?

Was it another dog? A deer? A rabbit?

The trail is constantly changing, and every hike offers new scents to investigate.

Exploring and Making Choices

Another thing I appreciate about hiking is that it gives my dogs opportunities to make their own decisions.

Should they walk through the puddle or around it?

Is that interesting smell worth investigating?

Should they step over the log or go around it?

These aren’t life-changing decisions, but they matter. Giving dogs appropriate choices allows them to become active participants in the experience instead of simply following directions the entire time.

Moving Their Bodies in Natural Ways

Hiking also encourages movement that simply isn’t possible on most sidewalks.

Dogs climb over rocks, balance on logs, weave around trees, scramble up hills, carefully pick their way down slopes, and adjust to constantly changing footing.

These small challenges improve body awareness and coordination while helping dogs learn what their bodies are capable of.

For Dachshunds, this often surprises people.

Their short legs don’t prevent them from being capable hikers. In fact, many Dachshunds absolutely thrive when they’re given opportunities to navigate natural terrain at their own pace.

Small Challenges Build More Capable Dogs

Confidence rarely appears overnight.

It grows one successful experience at a time.

Nature is remarkably good at providing those experiences.

The Trail Teaches Lessons We Can’t

Some obstacles look intimidating at first.

A shallow stream. A narrow bridge. A rocky section of trail. A fallen log.

I’ve watched dogs hesitate, think through the situation, try something, succeed, and walk away noticeably more confident than they were just a few minutes earlier.

That’s difficult to recreate in a training session because the lesson isn’t coming from me.

The confidence doesn’t come from me telling them they can do it. It comes from discovering they can do it themselves.

It’s coming from the dog’s own experience.

Confidence Comes From Solving Problems

As humans, we often want to help immediately when our dogs encounter something difficult.

Sometimes that’s the right choice.

Other times, giving them a moment to figure things out on their own builds confidence in ways that simply lifting them over an obstacle never could.

Of course, I always prioritize safety, but I’ve learned that many dogs are more capable than we initially give them credit for.

Every Hike Builds Resilience

One of the reasons hiking never gets old is because no two outings are exactly alike.

Even if you visit the same trail every weekend, the experience changes.

The weather changes. The smells change. The seasons change. Wildlife moves through the area. Trees fall. Flowers bloom. Creeks rise and fall.

Dogs learn that new experiences aren’t automatically something to fear. Instead, novelty becomes a normal part of life.

Over time, those repeated experiences help create dogs that are more adaptable, more confident, and better able to cope with change.

Hiking Strengthens Your Relationship

There have been two moments over the years that perfectly captured what hiking has meant for my relationship with my Dachshunds.

The first happened after I returned home from a three-day, 25-mile solo backpacking trip with Gretel. We camped together, ate together, and for three days we only had each other for company and safety.

I assumed she’d be tired of me by the time we got home. I expected her to run excitedly to my husband.

Instead, she tried to climb back into my arms. I was actually shocked and a little confused until I saw that act for what it was – her continuing to seek connection with me even when we were back home.

The second happened while crossing a fast-moving creek.

I walked through the water, but Gretel chose to walk across a log suspended above the current. When she reached the end, there was still a gap between us.

I leaned toward her, encouraged her, and after a moment’s hesitation she jumped into my arms.

I still get emotional thinking about that moment.

She trusted that if I was asking her to jump, I was going to catch her.

Those weren’t isolated experiences.

Over years of hiking together, I realized we weren’t simply sharing adventures. We were building trust.

You’re Experiencing the World Together

Unlike many training sessions, hiking doesn’t have to revolve around constant instruction.

You’re moving through the same environment together, noticing many of the same things, and learning to communicate naturally along the way.

Over time, you begin to understand each other better.

You notice when your dog needs a break, when they’re becoming uncertain, or when they’ve found something especially interesting. Likewise, your dog learns to look to you for guidance when they encounter something unfamiliar.

That kind of partnership is difficult to build sitting at home.

Hiking Doesn’t Have to Mean Climbing Mountains

One misconception I hear all the time is that hiking has to mean an all-day adventure deep in the wilderness.

It doesn’t.

Some of my favorite outings have been short walks through local forests, nature preserves, quiet parks, or along peaceful rivers. Even spending thirty minutes on a trail can provide experiences your dog simply won’t encounter during a neighborhood walk.

Your Dachshund probably doesn’t care whether you’re hiking in a national park or your local nature preserve. They’re there for the experience, not the destination.

The goal isn’t to cover the most miles or reach the highest summit.

The goal is to give your dog opportunities to explore, discover, and experience the natural world.

If you’re new to hiking, start small.

Choose an easy trail. Let your dog set a comfortable pace. Allow extra time for sniffing and exploring.

You may find that slowing down becomes part of the experience for you, too.

Final Thoughts

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that my Dachshunds look completely different on a neighborhood walk than they do on a trail.

When we’re walking sidewalks or neighborhood streets, they often have an expression that seems to say, “We’re just checking this off today’s to-do list.”

I never realized how routine those walks had become until we started spending more time in the woods.

On the trail, everything changes.

Their faces light up. They’re curious about every smell, every sound, and every turn in the trail. They move with purpose. They become completely engaged with the world around them.

It wasn’t until I learned more about canine behavior and welfare that I understood what I’d been witnessing all those years.

Hiking isn’t special because it provides one particular benefit. It’s special because so many meaningful experiences happen at the same time. Dogs move their bodies, engage their senses, solve problems, make choices, experience novelty, build confidence, strengthen their relationship with us, and simply get the opportunity to be dogs.

Not every outing needs a training goal. Not every adventure needs to be productive.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our dogs is the chance to slow down, step into nature together, and let them experience the world the way they were designed to.

After decades of hiking with Dachshunds, I still believe it’s one of the very best things we can do for them.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://youdidwhatwithyourweiner.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Hiking-Ultimate-Dog-Enrichment-PIN-600x900.jpg" alt="Hiking is so much more than a way to exercise your dog.
