It isn\u2019t a strategy problem. It\u2019s a poverty of imagination and a deficit of anticipation \u2014 and it ends the same way every time, with an organization scrambling to react to technological disruption with AI, climate risks to supply chain, staffing problems due to an aging population and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an alternative, and it starts somewhere most executives don\u2019t look \u2014 hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A high-hope mindset<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transformation starts with a high-hope mindset, and hope itself is endless, driven by the renewable energy we create through the audacious goals we set, the agency we afford ourselves and the pathways we travel toward solutions. The ability to hope and the ability to explore possible futures are deeply connected. We are who we are as a species because we evolved to consider the past and our current predicaments, and to imagine what comes next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-hope leaders and team members generate multiple pathways, are flexible and bounce back from adversity, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2037968\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whereas \u201clow-hope individuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d often face barriers, generate fewer alternatives and show diminished motivation. Futures work then adds a strategic upgrade, enabling us to see where that effort will matter most<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">, with organizations that implement this foresight seeing higher growth,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0040162517302287\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased revenues and up to twice the market capitalization<\/a> vs. those that don\u2019t<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Building corporate imagination<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, I ran a futures project with the CEO of one of the world\u2019s largest privately owned producers of fresh-frozen vegetables and plant-based ingredients. We were mapping climate scenarios across Southern Europe when, mid-briefing, they stopped me. They were flying to Spain that week to invest in a partner\u2019s operations \u2014 in a region our findings showed would be under serious heat stress within a decade. They called an emergency meeting of their operations executives and staged the investment over three years rather than committing upfront. Hope didn\u2019t make them optimistic. It made them look further ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we bring hope and futures work together, we gain organizational and executive capabilities that let us understand the work at a top level and then get into the details of how to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the intersection of hope theory and futures work, we find imagination, anticipation and empathy. These are skills organizations must build internally, and they\u2019re what turn energy into practical application \u2014 the foundation of my book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hope Engineer\u2019s Playbook.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-hope leaders use six activities to gain understanding and drive execution: reflection, futures thinking, goal setting, pathway building, actions and agency recognition. This work builds on C.R. Snyder\u2019s hope theory, which identifies agency and pathways as the two engines of hopeful action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Deliberate choices for hope<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hope is sustained by the discipline of small, deliberate choices made every day:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Start the day with your \u201cwhy.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A single sentence sets direction: \u201cToday, we are working toward a future where . . .\u201d It anchors us \u2014 and the teams we lead \u2014 before the demands of the day scatter our attention. I recommend doing this in solitude and reflection: a walk, a workout, a coffee. It reboots clarity and strengthens long-term orientation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rehearse the futures you want.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Spend a few minutes visualizing a better outcome \u2014 a more resilient system, a healthier industry, a transformed community. Mental rehearsal builds both hope and readiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ask yourself hopeful questions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhat can go right?\u201d \u201cWhat is the smallest next step forward?\u201d \u201cWho can we bring together to explore hopeful futures and plan for change?\u201d These shift the narrative toward possibility and agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Track hopeful signals.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Once you are primed with ideas about what comes next, you must maintain and expand that knowledge. As you consume news, notice one or two developments \u2014 technological, societal, cultural, environmental, behavioral \u2014 that point toward better futures. This trains your mind to seek emergence and possibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Practice pathways thinking.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you hit resistance, write down the goal and three possible ways to move toward it. Simply seeing alternative routes increases agency and momentum, which in turn reinforces hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Slow down one decision per day.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Choose one decision due that day and deliberately slow it down. Take three breaths. Reread the inputs. Ask, \u201cWhat futures does this decision invite?\u201d Speed is the enemy of intentionality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Build a peer group.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Connect often with three to five people who think expansively, challenge you constructively and remind you why the work matters. If that group is virtual, meet face-to-face monthly or quarterly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Practice speculative gratitude.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sit and journal on \u201cI am grateful for the future where . . .\u201d It trains your nervous system to anticipate hopeful futures rather than brace for collapse and builds an emotional bridge between today and the future you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Becoming Hope Engineers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no small feat to build a hopeful mindset, drive transformation toward better futures and champion large-scale change. It takes stamina and ongoing maintenance \u2014 in process, in relationships, in personal health \u2014 and a commitment to the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hope Engineers are leaders who master imagination, anticipation and empathy, focusing on exploring positive possible futures and motivating organizations to prepare, change, set plans in place and solidify commitment.
