But the better the copies become, the harder it is to avoid the real question: what, exactly, are we paying for when we buy luxury?<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-ejanw780879\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>A fake Rolex tells the time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-7ogcv735949\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>A sufficiently good one may have a sapphire crystal, etchings, rehaut, ceramic bezel, automatic movement, substantial steel bracelet and dimensions close enough to the genuine watch that most people encountering it across a restaurant table would have no idea.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-eiqf5781151\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>So what, exactly, is fake?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-vyt4q696038\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>The steel exists. The movement exists. The hands go round. The physical object may range from dreadful to surprisingly accomplished. What has been copied most importantly is not leather, gold, steel or cotton. It is <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>meaning<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>. And luxury businesses spend extraordinary amounts of money creating it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"FTlfa g5Toz K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" data-ricos-heading=\"s83p5696052\" id=\"viewer-s83p5696052\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span aria-hidden=\"https:\/\/www.thetheowrist.com\/post\/true\" id=\"the-fake-economy-is-not-marginal-s83p5696\"\/><span class=\"YhYpl\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>The fake economy is not marginal<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-i7yy6700874\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Counterfeiting is large enough to be an industry in its own right. The OECD and EU Intellectual Property Office estimated the international trade in counterfeit and pirated goods at approximately <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>$467 billion in 2021<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>, equivalent to around <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>2.3% of global imports<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>. Clothing, footwear and leather goods together represented 62% of counterfeit seizures in the study, although fake goods extend into watches, jewellery, cosmetics, electronics, toys, car parts, medicines and almost anything else capable of carrying economic value (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/publications\/mapping-global-trade-in-fakes-2025_94d3b29f-en.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>OECD<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-d6r6v696064\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Those numbers need interpreting carefully. Customs seizures cannot reveal every counterfeit moving around the world, while calculations based on the retail value of hypothetical genuine products can produce figures that bear little resemblance to what counterfeit buyers actually paid. Still, nobody can plausibly describe the trade as a few Rolexes on blankets outside tourist attractions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-xzaqh696068\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>In one US prosecution concluded in 2025, customs officers had intercepted shipments containing 149 counterfeit Rolex watches and six other counterfeit watches destined for a seller who advertised them through social media. Investigators later recovered more than 60 additional fake luxury watches (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ct\/pr\/former-massachusetts-police-officer-sentenced-prison-trafficking-counterfeit-luxury?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Department of Justice<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>). Another US case disclosed in December 2025 involved more than <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>$4 million in sales<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span> of counterfeit clothing, handbags, jewellery and other designer goods through Facebook livestreams and peer-to-peer payment services (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ct\/pr\/new-britain-woman-admits-importing-and-selling-counterfeit-goods?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Department of Justice<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>). Counterfeiting persists because demand persists. That is more interesting than the brands would sometimes like us to think.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"FTlfa g5Toz K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" data-ricos-heading=\"imdz8696082\" id=\"viewer-imdz8696082\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span aria-hidden=\"https:\/\/www.thetheowrist.com\/post\/true\" id=\"luxury-is-partly-a-signalling-system-imdz8696\"\/><span class=\"YhYpl\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Luxury is partly a signalling system<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-eocaa752918\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>There is nothing particularly radical about saying that luxury goods communicate status. Economists, sociologists and marketers have been studying conspicuous consumption for rather longer than Instagram has existed. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-bagzv757204\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>A particularly useful 2010 study by Young Jee Han, Joseph Nunes and Xavier Dr\u00e8ze examined what the researchers called <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>brand prominence<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>: essentially, how loudly a luxury product advertises its maker. They found different preferences according to consumers&#8217; wealth and desire for status. Some wealthy consumers preferred discreet luxury recognisable mainly to those already familiar with it. Consumers with a high need for status but insufficient wealth to buy genuine luxury were, unsurprisingly, more attracted to conspicuously branded counterfeits (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1509\/jmkg.74.4.015?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Sage Journals<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-vkib1696094\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>That matters because it describes a fake not simply as a cheaper product, but as a cheaper <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>signal<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>. Suppose a genuine watch costs \u00a310,000 and a highly convincing counterfeit costs \u00a3500. If the objective is accurate timekeeping, both purchases are irrational. A \u00a3100 quartz watch will probably outperform them. If the objective is enjoying excellent watchmaking, the counterfeit is compromised because much of the engineering, finishing, provenance and manufacturer support of the original is missing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-k2il5696104\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>But if the objective is simply: <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>I want other people to believe I own a \u00a310,000 watch <\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>then the \u00a3500 counterfeit may be economically efficient. You have purchased the public signal while avoiding most of the private cost. Call it <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>status arbitrage<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>. Keith Wilcox, Hyeong Min Kim and Sankar Sen found in a 2009 <\/span><\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Journal of Marketing Research<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span> study that consumers were more receptive to counterfeit luxury when their relationship with luxury brands served a <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>social-adjustive function<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>\u2014 using products to fit in or gain social approval \u2014 rather than primarily expressing personal values. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-qudaf696128\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>More awkwardly for legitimate manufacturers, the researchers also showed that marketing itself could influence these motivations. Product conspicuousness and advertising messages affected the social function consumers associated with luxury brands and, consequently, their response to counterfeits (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1509\/JMKR.46.2.247?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>DOI<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>). In simpler language: counterfeiters did not invent the psychological machinery they exploit. Luxury brands helped build it.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-kfl6n696136\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>They spend decades associating their products with wealth, beauty, achievement, desirability, discernment, exclusivity and belonging. Celebrities wear them. Athletes endorse them. Boutiques resemble temples. Products are restricted, allocated, numbered or made deliberately difficult to obtain. Then somebody reproduces the visible object cheaply and uses it to acquire some of the same social meaning. There is something faintly comic about the industry responding as though the customer has misunderstood the game. Ordinary businesses generally celebrate selling more products. A cross-country study involving 3,200 luxury consumers and 60 brands found that greater market penetration tended overall to reduce luxury desirability, while awareness increased it. In other words, a luxury brand benefits from being widely known without becoming too widely owned (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0148296317303430?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>ScienceDirect<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-jfwmw825904\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>More recent research has complicated the picture \u2014 not every manufactured form of exclusivity automatically makes consumers value a product more \u2014 but perceived natural rarity continues to contribute to functional, social and emotional value in luxury categories including bags, shoes and jewellery (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1057\/s41262-024-00359-8?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Springer<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>). This produces one of luxury&#8217;s central tensions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-qlyey696160\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Everybody should want it. Among respondents aged 15\u201324, that figure rose to 50%. There are excellent legitimate watches costing \u00a3500. If you have \u00a31,000 and want a well-made leather bag, there are plenty of designers capable of making one. The counterfeit becomes necessary only when the thing you specifically want is <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>the identity of the product you cannot afford<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-p96ka696218\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>That doesn&#8217;t make the desire illegitimate. People attach meaning to brands. In August 2026, <\/span><\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>WIRED<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span> bought several counterfeit Rolex watches as part of an investigation into so-called superclones (that investigation inspired this discussion\/article). One reportedly passed an initial encounter with Rolex retail staff without being identified as counterfeit before closer scrutiny. Here the distinction between genuine and counterfeit is not merely cultural. Treating every counterfeit as ethically equivalent is intellectually lazy. A fake watch that turns out to have poor water resistance is disappointing. There is evidence \u2014 but it needs stating properly. A 2026 OECD\/EUIPO study found a <\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>robust statistical association<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span> between countries&#8217; counterfeit-export intensity and indicators including forced labour, informal employment, hazardous child labour and weaker labour protections. Crucially, the researchers describe relationships and correlations; they do not establish that every counterfeit handbag is made using forced labour or that buying a fake Rolex directly finances a specific criminal enterprise (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/publications\/labour-exploitation-and-illicit-trade_c55a3f66-en.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"_7gGcq aaKR9\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>OECD<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>).  That qualification matters. The idea that counterfeit purchasing is necessarily a clean act of rebellion against greedy corporations is therefore too convenient. There may be people being exploited on both sides of luxury manufacturing. There are circumstances where avoiding wearing an expensive watch is sensible. Theft risk is real. Travelling with a conspicuous high-value watch can be foolish. But nothing requires the safer replacement to continue displaying the same logo. Wear something else. If that feels unsatisfactory because you still want other people to see a Rolex, we are back where we started. She buys a replica because she is fascinated by how convincingly a factory can reverse-engineer a \u00a310,000 object for \u00a3500. She knows it is fake. She tells anyone who asks that it is fake. She does not attempt to sell it as genuine. The social deception has largely disappeared.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-12n3i696430\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>The intellectual-property problem has not. Nor necessarily have the supply-chain issues.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-lthrd696434\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>But philosophically this is quite different from wearing a counterfeit precisely so that people believe you can afford the genuine watch. Here, the counterfeit itself has become the object of interest. You could even argue that a sufficiently sophisticated clone is an intriguing piece of reverse engineering. I would still rather see that engineering directed towards an original watch. But at least the motivation is about the object rather than impersonating its owner.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"FTlfa g5Toz K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" data-ricos-heading=\"1ufpz696444\" id=\"viewer-1ufpz696444\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span aria-hidden=\"https:\/\/www.thetheowrist.com\/post\/true\" id=\"is-authenticity-itself-worth-money-1ufpz696\"\/><span class=\"YhYpl\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Is authenticity itself worth money?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-vz258793167\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>This is ultimately where the discussion becomes more interesting than Rolex versus Fake Rolex. Imagine two watches that are externally indistinguishable. One genuine. One counterfeit. Nobody other than you will ever know which is which.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-u9a4f818895\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Which do you want? That is not automatically ridiculous. Human beings care enormously about authenticity even when replicas reproduce an object&#8217;s visible properties. We travel to museums to see original paintings rather than perfect prints. An inherited watch can matter more than an identical replacement. A chair made in the workshop of an important designer has cultural meaning that an indistinguishable later copy does not acquire simply by matching its dimensions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"vVP7K aoX-4 K3gHo gR5w2\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-4trnt696470\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"AKCE3\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>History cannot be reverse-engineered. Provenance cannot be machined. Indeed, much of their economic power comes from turning accumulated history, recognition and cultural meaning into something that can accompany a physical product out of the boutique. That is legitimate value. It forces you to consider and decide which of them you are actually paying for. In a peculiar way, she validates it. Her fake has value only because everybody still understands what the real object signifies. That is why I don&#8217;t quite accept the idea that buying a fake means playing the game on your own terms.
