It\u2019s September, which means it\u2019s time to teach the Constitutional Convention. Time to haul out the lists of delegates, states, compromises, and constitutional provisions from more than 200 years ago\u2014and figure out how to keep students interested in a dusty old debate.<\/p>\n

But you know the Convention was so much more than elites hashing and rehashing questions about state power, war debt, and taxation. It was a months-long process filled with uncertainty, disagreement, negotiation, shifting alliances, and difficult choices about the future of the United States. In other words, it was a fantastic teachable moment, one that is too often reduced to reviewing the outcome rather than exploring the messy process that produced it.<\/p>\n

We know it too.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we created the Constitutional Convention<\/a> exhibit on our Digital Atlas. <\/p>\n

We don\u2019t treat the signing of the Constitution as a predetermined outcome. Instead, we give students multiple ways to explore the people, places, events, debates, and ideas that shaped the document as it was being written. For middle school teachers, it offers a way to help students build historical understanding through evidence, perspective, and chronology.<\/p>\n

Start with the road to Philadelphia<\/a><\/p>\n

Context matters. Our \u201cRoad to the Constitutional Convention\u201d map helps students understand the problems that brought delegates to Philadelphia in May 1787. Students can trace the events and political debates that led to the Convention and begin to see the meeting in Philadelphia as a contentious political response to the very real problems facing the new nation.<\/p>\n

Meet the people behind the Constitution<\/a><\/p>\n

The delegates brought different ages, education, economic interests, political backgrounds, and experiences with the Revolution and the Confederation government. Our \u201cWho Were the Delegates\u201d graphic provides ways to examine those differences, including the delegates\u2019 ages, education, economic interests, and previous political experience. Our Continental Experiences<\/a> deepens students\u2019 understanding of the delegates\u2019 roles within the broader context of the American Founding. It also opens the door to questions about how a delegate\u2019s lived experiences might have shaped his views about government, representation, or federal power.<\/p>\n

Put the Convention on the map<\/a><\/p>\n

Place matters. Our Interactive Map of Philadelphia allows students to explore the Convention within a physical setting and consider what it meant to conduct a momentous and secretive political debate in a real city, surrounded by other people, businesses, public spaces, and institutions. The multi-layered map adds historic and current geographic context to a story that is generally presented through documents and portraits.<\/p>\n

Follow the Convention day by day<\/a><\/p>\n

Perhaps the best way to understand the Convention is to slow down and follow it as it unfolded.<\/p>\n

Our Calendar of the Convention allows students to move through the proceedings day by day, examining the issues under debate, the delegates present, and the documents associated with each day\u2019s business. The Attendance at the Constitutional Convention<\/a> resource makes clear just how fluid participation was. Delegates came and went throughout the summer, and some states were unable to vote on days because their delegates were absent.<\/p>\n

That detail can change students\u2019 understanding of the Convention. Rather than imagining 55 men sitting together in the same room for four months, students can investigate how participation, alliances, and decisions changed over time.<\/p>\n

The Major Themes of the Convention essays<\/a> provide another way into the debates, from representation and the balance between national and state power to the presidency, the judiciary, congressional power, and the deeply contested issue of slavery.<\/p>\n

Explore the Convention as a debate, not a foregone conclusion<\/a><\/p>\n

One of the most important things students can learn from the Convention is that its outcome was not inevitable.<\/p>\n

The delegates disagreed about fundamental questions: How much power should the national government have? How should states be represented? How should the president be chosen? What limits should be placed on government power? And how could the states reach agreement when their interests differed so sharply?<\/p>\n

Our Role-playing the Convention<\/a> activity provides a way for students to encounter the Convention from the perspective of the people who participated in it. Armed with information about individual delegates and the issues they confronted, students can consider why reasonable people might have reached very different conclusions about the Constitution.<\/p>\n

How Americans Have Remembered the Convention<\/a><\/p>\n

Americans have been interpreting and debating the Constitutional Convention since it ended in 1787. Those changing interpretations give students a chance to practice an essential skill of historical inquiry: thinking about how and why people understand the past differently.<\/p>\n

Lincoln\u2019s History of the Slavery Debate at the Constitutional Convention<\/a>\u00a0allows students to examine Abraham Lincoln\u2019s account of the Convention\u2019s debates over slavery and the compromises that shaped the Constitution. Written in the context of the 1860 presidential campaign, Lincoln\u2019s account gives students an opportunity to consider not only what happened at the Convention, but also how a later generation understood and interpreted those events.<\/p>\n

Paintings and other representations of the Convention offer another window into historical interpretation. Created at different times and for different purposes, these images can prompt students to ask a question historians return to again and again:\u00a0What can an image tell us about the past, and what can\u2019t it tell us?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taken together, these resources help students see the Constitutional Convention not as a predetermined march toward the Constitution we know today, but as a contested historical process that Americans have continued to interpret and debate.<\/p>\n

We want to help teachers move past teaching the Constitution backward from the document and toward teaching the Convention as something that happened. Our Constitutional Convention exhibit lets students reconstruct the Convention rather than simply review its outcome.<\/p>\n
